"Blue Moon of Kentucky" - Tuba Skinny with Mariana Piatti

Музыка

One of the highlights of the evening happened when this young lady from Argentina stepped up the mic to sing this spirited version of Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky." At The Starlight Lounge, New Orleans on January 15, 2020.

    Showing the usual Tuba Skinny understanding - without any signal from Shaye there is always a 'break' in Bars 23 and 24. However, she does signal them to go back the Bridge (Bar 17) with the finger bridge signal (4 mins 38 secs to 4 mins 39 secs) and indicates by swaying her cornet to both sides (4 mins 49 secs to 4 mins 52 secs) that Barnabus and Craig are to join her in the final two-bar 'break'. And did you notice they played the whole thing in the key of D (a key VERY rarely used by traditional jazz bands)? They also use this key when playing the song with Erika.

    @@so70aeiou I visit Nashville almost as often as New Orleans, and just like New Orleans, there are pockets of traditional music still to be found. Most of the live music in New Orleans is not traditional jazz, but it can be found. The same can be said of Nashville. And I prefer the traditional country and bluegrass as well. My favorite spots in Nashville are The Station Inn (the Spotted Cat of traditional country music) for bluegrass and traditional country, and 3rd and Lindsley on Monday night for The Time Jumpers who play traditional country and western swing. The Time Jumpers have the best musicians in Nashville playing the music they like to play when not playing in other bands and have become the hottest ticket in Nashville. Check them out.

    @@JamesSterling Thank you, I will whenever I'll get there. Quality is rare in every genre. Most trad jazz is sub quality too. Tuba Skinny is the best in my opinion. It feels so natural to play their style, it seems this is the way to play trad jazz yet they are the only ones to play like this these days, I think. I don't understand why. I strolled one night in Nashville and I did not hear even one sound of bluegrass. Just really loud music played inside which had hurt my ears (if I would have entered) and my musical sense too. Which do you like better, good bluegrass or good trad jazz ?

  • @kenmurray8476

    @kenmurray8476

    4 жыл бұрын

    Although I have a musical background, thanks to Pops and others, I have come to understand that trad jazz ensemble music is HARD to get right, and easy to get wrong. Only one person has to be messing up to throw the whole thing off. I think I prefer trad jazz, because it involves the same skill levels as bluegrass, which is oriented around virtuoso solos, but takes it to a higher musical level requiring the simultaneous coordinated improvisation.

  • @JamesSterling

    @@kenmurray8476 Good point but listen closely to some of the top bluegrass bands. Although not ensemble playing in the trad jazz sense, the backing instruments have to be in the pocket to make it happen. Check out The Earls of Leicester or The Lonesome River Band. And if you want to hear the best fiddler alive today search KZread for Michael Cleveland playing "Lee Highway Blues" and "Jerusalem Ridge". His fiddle breaks are the most innovative I have ever heard. It is improvisational jazz by any other name, and at the highest level. He won a Grammy last night for Best Bluegrass album.
