My band director was one of the trumpets in this show, and sometimes I hear him in his office playing that flight of the bumblebee bit. Also I can see where he gets the warm up techniques.

From what I've heard from BD guys I know (including a staff member in this video), the leads at BD are just so good they don't have to take it down. Seriously, Wayne Bergeron-esque chops. The staff asks if they need to take it down but they never do. Absolutely incredible.

These are all effective warmups and practice tools for any level. I've used similar warmups with middle schoolers and seen professional symphonic musicians humming, buzzing, and running Remington exercises before a performance. It's all 'variations on a long tone.'

My trumpet professor (and really all our music faculty) had the rule of "if you can't hear it you can't play it," and audiation is one of the cornerstones of musical practice and is easiest to apply without your instrument - just use the vocal folds you have. That's why any school of music has ALL their musicians sing on some level. So... if you want to play at a high level it might be time to start singing a bit.

@@seandevlin3948 Exactly. Let's see... dependent on your range, holding 1-3 down, you can play 3-4 different notes with ease. If you have no concept of where note center is; what the note is supposed to sound like... how would you ever hit the note you're after? Oh, and this is carried to an even greater extreme for f-horn players.
Geez, I wonder what that sounds like in the middle!

At the DCI Southeastern Championship in Powder Springs Georgia this year, I was lucky enough to sit in the middle of their circle. I was on a band trip to DCI and a friend of me and I saw BD's hornline walk far from their trailers. We followed them and they ended up in a tennis court. We sat there and watched them do a visual practice (which was pretty cool). Then they all went and formed a circle, so my friend and I walked to the outside fencing of the tennis court to hear them better. Then they started letting people in the court, but outside of the circle. My friend and I were super stoked just to be that close. Then they started letting people inside the circle, so of course I went. The sound was indescribable, and truly amazing. My friend and I were the only people in my school there that went into the circle, or even heard their warm-up, up close. It was awesome that I got to see and hear them up-close and in the circle!

As a contra, I don't think I'll ever understand how the hell trumpets can hit those screamer notes like that. Hell, there's notes in my show this year that I'm having to do air & valves on cause I can't hit them yet thanks to how deep my mouthpiece is xD

How much air do they have in their lungs?!
@bagellife2809

Prob just a little more than most brass players. They are just so got at stagger breathing you can’t tell. They prob have like numbers and they can only breath on counts 1-4 depending on their number. And I think they ease in to play after a breath and breaths are really short and fast. They keep everything not accented and smooth.
What's the tempo at the very beginning?
Somebody knows what song is that? I mean, the song in minute 3:42
The audio quality of the video totally changes halfway through the recording, what's that all about? Great video though, thank you for recording this incredible hornline!

Hmm... depends on which sound or role you like the best. Trumpets have the high stuff and (usually the melody). Mellophones have the most technical passages. Baritones/Euphoniums have the filling roles and sometimes the melody. Tubas provide the bass voice and can on occasion have the melody. So it just depends on what you feel like doing. I personally know a clarinet player who switched to euphonium in a year and is now at Blue Knights on his way to Bluecoats. So there you go.
@seandevlin3948
5 жыл бұрын
Baritone/Euphonium are often considered the easiest and most natural embouchure for beginning brass players to achieve. While a little more challenging many woodwind players have great success and find enjoyment with the Mellophone as Corps arrangers will often take the woodwind parts from the source music and write it for the Mellophone. But honestly just choose the one you enjoy the sound of the most. You have to enjoy the sound you are making.

Its the ballad from the show they cut it off cause it's early season and i enioy it early cause the last chord they hold and i enjoy it when it's fully done too cause ya know i love drums and brass
Why did they have a different flugelhorn soloist at the end of the season
@seandevlin3948
5 жыл бұрын
I do not know anyone at BD after the 2015 season so I cannot pull anyone for comment but there are many reasons a member or soloist can change over the course of a season. In Drum Corps injuries happen quite often so I wouldn't leave that out as the leading cause for an alternate to take the spot. Working with a corps one season we were doing improv solos for part of the preshow and we would let people challenge for those spots so the group of soloists changed several times over the season. There is always the chance of drill rewrites also taking place where the previous soloists dot may not have worked to get him to the staging area he needed to be so they had to have someone with a more manageable dot take the solo. There is also always the Blue Devil's factor where they just like to mix things up. They are a hard working and consistent group which provides them opportunities with what they can do on the field. If anyone knows someone from BD 2017 ask them for a comment about the change in soloist if possible!
Like the if flutes can’t come close to sounding this good
@3:25 thats why their one of the best
