Thank you! We were away from Beaufort for about 2 weeks and I didn't realize how much I missed it until we got back. I love the open space and seeing all of the sea birds. Having a view of the marsh is awesome. It's kind of like watching a movie. I love it!

What you need to know a female crab only mates once in their life’s. Once they get to 4.5 inches they have already mated out. They mate young that’s why you find them under a big male he’s protecting her, waiting for her to be ready to mate it’s usually right after they molt. That’s why they protect them for a short time they are soft shelled.

Thanks! Yes, I do realize female crabs only mate once. But, after she mates she can store some of the males sperm and can reproduce several times. Lots of people don't know that. I just don't know if there is a way to tell if she has reproduced all she can.

I'd sit here and watch the crabbing videos all day ! Living in Augusta limits my creek visits and just haven't as much time this year, where can I buy crabs at, Gay Seafood ? You got me craving them and I didn't get any put up this year.

I think Gay's Seafood would have crabs. You could also check Sea Eagle Market. One of them should have crabs. I'll try to make you guys some more crabbing videos soon. Thanks for the comment and watching!
So, as the end of fall approaches adult blue crabs migrate to lower saline content water to mate. I think you are getting juveniles and low quantities because the saline is high in the areas you have placed the traps. If you move to muddy less saline locations this may be another idea for a video...Is that correct?

Some of the crabs that we're catching are nice #1 males. Heavy crabs. But we are starting to catch more low quality crabs. Maybe you're right about the crabs moving to lower saline waters. I thought it was the other way around. I really don't know. I'll have to research it.

Last time we crabbed in NC around TGiving there were no crabs to be found although some of the commercial folks were still able to find a few. And great minds think alike -- we just talked about mature vs immature female crabs in our last video! We mostly keep only males, but occasionally keep a mature female crab as long as she's over 5".

Thanks for the comment Randy! We did catch a few but very mixed up. Right now in our area the commercial crabbers have moved most of their pot into the bigger river. As the water cools even more, they'll move them out even further. They'll move them out to deeper holes in search of females. Sometimes the sooks will be stacked up in them. Pots placed in the right areas will be loaded. When your in that line of work you learn the patterns of the crab. Lucky for me, I had some family that was into commercial crabbing. That's how I learned about them. Thanks for watching!

If left on their back for an extended time without being able to flip themselves over, they will die & it will ruin their meat. 😔
