Truckers do not need high power. CB is for local communication of just a few miles. High power will result in broadcasting over a wide area, blocking the legal radios of many law abiding truckers. Not only that, but you won’t be able to receive those further away.

Notice he DIDN'T show the output on the spectrum analyzer and how many spurious signals it was producing or how wide the signal was over the permitted width which I believe is less than 5kc. But if he 1/10th of a microvolt, that's pretty good on rx, I'd like to see that. Especially on AM

I have no clue what any of these terms like “splatterbox” and “golden screwdriver mean” I was just looking at getting a decent radio thats better than what you find in TA/ Pilot etc... I never had anybody cool in my life to show me the ins and outs of cb and I am for sure not looking to piss anybody off due to lack of education.

I agree one hundred percent, he'll get plenty of complaints because he's splattering over on the rest of the frequencies, and the radio won't last long, i run a stock 4 Watt Cobra 29 ltd classic radio with the modulation turned all the way up, a good quality microphone and a top notch antenna (Francis amazer 102 inch stainless steel whip) and talk to guys over 20 miles away, if i want to talk skip then i turn on my 150 watt foot warmer, no reason for all that extra garbage put in the radio.

This guys one of those feel good installers. Always goes through the extra trouble just for you.

Bruce this man knows what he's talking about. He's saying all the things I learned in 38 years of trucking. I had the same radio.

That 440 competition tune up is a joke. He's well known in the cb world for being a hack. This video hit cb radio groups quick. No way in hell 4 irf 520 mosfet transistors do 200 watts. Loose meters aka happy meters tell the customer what they wanna see. He reeled Bruce in like a bass. Hook, line n sinker. Lolol radios gonna bleed multiple channels. Lol plus that stock mic is great. Sra198 is bulletproof and sound great. Astatic mics put out now are junk. Switches go out in them often. Made cheap. He sold Bruce a mic he didn't need. Lol plus the bonus Dosy feel good Meter!!!

He talks about needing to "upgrade" the power feed wire, but here you can see inside the radio are two thin gauge wires coming from the power inlet. If what he said were true those would need to be upgraded as well.

CB is awesome - had one going all my years. I'm thrilled to see it still healthy and going strong. Gonna be real handy too if SHTF. My dad had a CB shop in Dallas back in the boom days of the 70's. Good times.

I'll never forget my first radio check. Parked on an on ramp tuning my cobra29ltd. "Can I get a radio check, how do I sound?" "You sound like a piece of shit!" "Thank you sir, have a good one" Then a couple other drivers key up and bicker about today's youth being the problem. I laughed so damn hard.

Hustler antennas must be great. The Bandit & Snowman never had any communication problems. They could hear each other perfectly and never have to listen to squelch out static no matter how far apart they were. Now wonder they never used cell phones.

Love the continued American culture of CB radio and the passion to create a work of art. In the UK CB is nearly dead. If everyone went out and got a CB like it was 1985 again mobile phones would be extinct

Seems to know what he's doing but damn he must just memorise marketing write-up on the backs of boxes.

Mics are weighted because it makes them easier/more comfortable to use. When you're using a mic that's really lightweight the cord has no problem pulling it back out of your hand. They do not add weight because they're trying to be "fraudulent", they add it to make the mic more controllable and pleasurable to use.

I love the spring design I wish all other antenna manufacturers would have incorporated it into their designs. I have dual Browning BR-78’s on my rig SWR 1.2 my favorite antenna so far

Mark sharman I heard you've been having a hard time with the dust in the air. You know the equipment uses externally discipline equipment through the 10 MHz reference with GPS receiver.

Speaking as a licenced Radio Ham (Amateur Radio) here in the UK....I would recommend keeping the "Overs"/"Ragchews" Short as that Radio and it's "Heat Sink" which are the Fins on the rear are Not designed for anything more than about 30 watts or so. It Will get Very Hot quickly to the point of not being able to touch the rear of the unit and might start shutting the power down or even shutting the radio off if it has a Protection circuit fitted. it will also take a very long time to cool down too as there are no cooling fans in it. You could fit a large "Computer/PC Fan" inside the cubby where the CB is fitted, it would be possibly a 12 volt unit but check first, that should help with cooling so long as the Fan is Blowing onto the radio. You really don't need anywhere close to 250 watts, it's all sales speak unless you want to "work the World" with a huge directional Yagi antenna!. In a few years time (4-5) you will be able too on the 11 Metre 27mhz band with your Truck antenna possibly when the current "Sunspot Cycle" starts lifting out of it's 11 Year Doldrums cycle (about midway at the moment). Keep the power output down to a sensible output, say up to 30 watts or less (my Ham radio gear, Yaesu and Kenwood transceivers are only around 25 watts AM and 100 watts SSB!. Just be sensible on its output or it won't last long?, bigger antenna's are the way to go but not possible on a Truck at that height due to tree limbs catching or similar. love what you are doing to the old girl, all Cabovers here in the UK and Europe at 52ft overall length (trailer included!) but we have around 3ft taller height limit than you at around 16'6'' or more?. Keep safe and keep the video's coming.

It's a good thing the FCC doesn't have the time or manpower to check CB radios anymore, 4 watts is the maximum legal output for class D, AM communications. If you want more, you need to go SSB (Single Side Band), then you can generally, depending on the radio, transmit up to 12 watts. Yeah yeah, I know, I have a Texas Star 500 afterburner pumped into 4 102" whips on and 8'X8' grid, which (if you do the math) with a standard 4watt transmitter, will generate a 1200 watt omnidirectional signal. So you can do the math and understand why I talk around the world on SSB. And Amber: BC Mamma / Brunette Bombshell / TooShy (since she's shy on camera)

3 channel radio shack in my truck. Back then it was channel 10 for truckers but then switched to 19 to reduce the bleed over on 9. Back to radio shack to get the 19 crystal. Radio checks were known to be mostly from 4 wheelers with a new radio playing around with it.

440 built a radio for me. Best sounding radio I've ever had but it hardly receives. We were just pups back then. He had a short run in Indy.

In high school a lot of us had a CB in our truck. We had some really stupid handles, hoser, farmer,boner, stumpy, hoots, just to name a few. I had the102" whip on my truck

totally rad...great choice in radio...ive owned ranger radios before...i used to drive and had a big set up at home...altho i personally never ran the hustler i knew many guys who did..i was a wilson antenna guy back then, again really neat...brought back some memories....ive not been into CB for many years....ran some big power at home and in the trucks.....for me id definately want a sideband radio....just a prefrence....anyhoo great vid!! ty for sharing

I know this will probably anger some folks, but here goes. 1) There's no way that radio is putting out a clean 200W. I would like to see that radio put on a spectrum analyzer, it's probably pumping out a nasty amount of harmonics. Further, talking into the mic while watching the scope isn't proof that your modulation is clean. I'd like to see a signal generator hooked up to that radio so we can get a good view of the modulated carrier, I'll bet it's horribly over-modulated. 2) I know CB is meant to be line-of-sight, and in that case mirror mounts are not a horrible option. However, and I don't know how that cab is constructed, but if it's made of metal and not fiberglass, that antenna would be more efficient if it were mounted smack in the center of the roof. Preferably, you'd drill a hole in the roof and mount it there. This would provide an RF ground plane and, if done correctly, would also provide a good DC ground. Take-away notes: if your antenna is efficient and mounted correctly, there should be no need for more than 4 watts for local communication. You're talking to people that are down the road a couple of miles, not in another country. If you really want to break the law and run over the FCC allowed 4 watts, keep your screwdriver out of the radio and run an amplifier. At least then you won't be splattering all over the 11 meter spectrum.

That CB guy is impressive. Great job Bruce that’s the best most informative and interesting CB tech video I’ve seen. One of my favorite cb handles I heard from a lady is “dangerous curves”. Keep up with the truckin videos!

Blue Collar is very cool. The CB is awesome.

When he opened that cb up it was over,it was coming in and out the other ear and I didn’t know what the heck I was looking at,this man is smart and knows what he’s talking about

Any one who has that many organizers hanging on his wall is a good sign he knows what he’s is talking about🤙

One thing that was important in what he said was not sacrificing radio life expectancy. I'm a big-time radio fanatic.

It’s always great to listen to someone like this guy who is extremely knowledgeable, passionate, and proud of his work.

I like that radio. Never heard of it. RCI 39 VHP! Good luck with your trucking business. Love the cab over ya don't see those much anymore. They were phasing out before I got my CDL's so never got to drive one.

This is a certified genius on CB radios. You can tell Bruce just stood there like a big dummy because he had no clue what he was explaining to everyone. I guess I got to give Bruce some credit for finding the right person to install his CB.
