Bloodvein River Canoe Trip - Summer 2023

The Bloodvein flows from its headwaters in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, through Manitoba’s Atikaki Provincial Park, before draining into Lake Winnipeg, some ~340km away. It’s got a rich history of human use dating back thousands of years, and contains some of the best preserved pictograph sites anywhere in Canada.
We paddled approximately 230kms, navigating more than 100 marked rapids over 12 days on the water. Despite the ravages of forest fires in recent years, we encountered hundreds of Bald Eagles, caught seemingly endless fish, saw Pelicans, Otters, Moose, Snakes, Salamanders, Swans and vast fields of Fire Weed and other wildflowers as they reclaimed the area. It’s an official Canadian Heritage River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a pretty spectacular place to visit.

Great trip video. I was fortunate enough to stay at Matawa Lodge (5:50) in 1991 on a fishing trip. It looks the same!

Great trip and I liked the video. I was just saying to my canoe partner that I needed to pick your brain on this trip as I planned to do it this year or next. And then boom, a video of it. Awesome! Looks like you rented the canoes, didn't know that was an option that changes my planning a bit.

Great trip and video, thanks for sharing. I own the same canoe though it's mostly flat water, it has flexed its way over a number of surprise hard hits on rocks and came out fine. I'm wonder how your crew liked them on a rapid filled river trip like this? Thanks.

I was also surprised to see the light canoes, but since everything is drop-and-pool, it could work.

Doing Bloodvein this next summer. Flying in from Bissett probably further east to Murdock lake. Were those canoes Kevlar? I was thinking maybe old Royalex canoes from them but they looked pretty shiny.

Hi. Looks like an amazing trip!! Can i ask how much the float plane charter cost and who you went through? I was hoping to plan a trip but I'm worried that the cost of a charter is out of our budget.

Nice video guys! Come on back up and do the headwaters of the Bloodvein starting at Knox, up to Larus and west to Artery. Check out my free download of a map for WCPP and check in with Albert at Goldseekers in Red Lake. Cheers
