I have worked in actual game companies, and never heard anyone talk like this with such great creative perspective. This is insane. An invincible monster chasing you through loading screens is already the step above FROM SOFTWARE. FROM are creative people, but they focus more on cool looking boss fight not expanding game conventions. They like to define their brand. Also Winter Lantern enemies were on of the best, and they like throw them away instantly. You can do a whole game with them.

This demake is so impressive. It really looks and feels like one of the best PS1 games never made. I really hope Lilith will make an original game in this old school design and actually make money from it.

I wish it was an actual PS1 game and not a lookalike for PC so that it could be played on emulators on a PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, on a phone or on an actual PlayStation (there must be PS1 emulation for hacked PS3s, right?). But that's impossible, of course. I guess you couldn't compile it for PS1 anyways since the tools are proprietary. Still, this project is a work of art! Absolutely awesome.

@@Nitidus Exactly. I find the whole idea of replicating the look and feel of vintage hardware using modern tech defeats the purpose. Its not like PS1 hardware and dev tools no longer exist, so why not at least try to do it for real? To me it betrays a lack of respect for those of us who actually worked on the system back in the day, because its circumventing the restrictions and the challenges we had to overcome. Games looked like that back in the day not out of incompetence or ignorance, its kinda grating to see people turn it into a pose.

The decision to flip Yharnam around and end with a new unique boss encounter was a bold one that really paid off. It really makes this project so much more than a fan made homage. The fight with Gilbert is so good I wish it was in the original game. It completely fits thematically.

The dev has very contagious positive attitude. I expected to just skip through this video, but I sat down and watched the entire thing. The enjoyment Lilith Walther had with this project and her love for the medium made me smile. I also agree with the philosophy to release the code and let it live. When Carmack came up with the idea to release Doom source code, they called him crazy. It was the best decision ever, Doom is still alive and the community is creating crazy projects. For example Ashes Afterglow is a what if Doom but it's a horror Stalker full game and it's completely free, no strings attached.

She did an amazing job. I remember, back in the early days of collage, I was making a 2D God of War sequel fan game called GoW: Redemption. I was making in in Game Maker and I used the existing Kratos sprites done for the old cellphone game and I began programming it. It was really hard as I was a beginner, still am in a lot of ways, but I worked on it for months, I made a few testing levels and even a test title screen with pixel art and everything. I even made new attack animations and level pixel art! But one day the file was corrupted and was lost... I was pretty devastated and cancelled the project. The only surviving thing was a screenshot of the title screen. It takes a lot of love to put together something like this, so as someone who tried and failed to make a fan game, I really love this demake, and I really appreciate all the incredible work she did.

It’s also nice to see I’m not alone when it come to thinking something was lost in this era of new design sensiblities aka qa.

Man, I’ve been following Lilith on Twitter for a bit now and seeing what she does on there already made me think she is such a cool person. Then she mentioned LittleBigPlanet and that just stepped her up even further. Favorite series from my childhood. But no really this documentary was awesome and getting to see Lilith speak passionately about what she’s been able to accomplish is really inspiring to me. I haven’t thought about game development as a career choice in 8 or 9 years but now I feel like that may change and it’s largely because of Bloodborne PSX, Bloodborne Kart, and Lilith. (:

I really loved this video going through BBPSX! I followed Lilith while she was making it, but it's really cool to see a more concise and efficient look at the ideas, mindset and process of the demake. Thanks for putting a spotlight on Lilith and the insights (hah) one can get from studying both the difference between modern and older games. It really did light up a couple of spots in my brain when you talked about the menu and it's relation to the 3D. There are things I love about older games that aren't as common in modern games any more, partially because we've gotten used to it (like Lilith said) but also because the zietgeist has changed. Anyway, rambling. Thanks for your hard work and insightful (HAH) questions!

With how much hype this demake got, it was so deserving of a documentary. Fantastic stuff here, love Lilith's take on how we streamline alot of the fun out of games. I think it would be very interesting if we start to see indie devs making retro games in the style of PS1/N64 era games instead of only making 2D sprite based retro games. This is the era I grew up with and it really is an untapped treasure trove of nostalgia.
