Blood Groups Overview

NOTE: There is an inadvertent typographical error in the description of the H antigen and the ABO chains, first seen at 15:55 of this video but repeated multiple times. The subterminal GalNAc should be GlcNAc. I regret the error and will correct in future updates.
This Blood Bank Guy video, recorded in December 2011, contains lots of information about the major blood group systems. It is, in fact, a modified and updated version of the blood groups lecture (Blood Bank 1) that I used to give when I taught for the Osler Institute Pathology Review Course.

I discovered that our profs at the university did nothing to teach us BB, but you just made it so easy! Thank you so much!! Will be taking my exam soon and now I'm much confident that I can do great on BB questions. That's really helpful and opened my mind and just made the BB the most fun! Thanks again!

Hi... I want to thank you for this video. I am a laboratory science instructor and I know how it feels to talk that long but seems to cover so small portion only of a ginormous topic. So I think you are very generous of your time and energy. I am reviewing for a licensure exam in UAE and this helps me a lot in recalling important things in Immunohematology. I appreciate the help this video extends. :)

I had a wonderful instructor for my lectures in college and still there were things here that clarified so much for me with your visual aids. Some of them might have felt silly when you made them, but hey, sometimes the simplest concepts can get lost amidst the thick of things. I don't feel so freaked out for my upcoming MT exam now.

Awesome video. I work at a hospital and rotate in blood bank. We just had a patient with anti-U antibody. Pt needed transfusion. This U negative blood type is extremely rare. We had to call red cross to get these units. They were frozen units and saved for occasions like these.

It was a very in-depth (and now my brain hurts!), however, highly informative and helpful to me. I am recently employed (in training) by a trauma center and must brush up on my blood bank theory. This is a great refresher for me since I passed my ASCP nearly 25 years ago and have only worked in very small blood banks in the past. I appreciate the material. You are an awesome teacher. But WOW, do you talk fast! ;-)

Excellent lecture, very detailed. I was hoping you could clarify something for me in regards to the biochemical structure of the H antigen: in the video, you show the terminal galactose being bound to a subterminal N-Acetylgalactosamine, however I have encountered this structure described as being comprised of the terminal galactose bound to a subterminal N-Acetylglucosamine rather than an N-Acetylgalactosamine in various immunohematology textbooks. Which model is correct? Thanks!

GlcNAc is correct, Levi. It was a typo that got distributed throughout all the diagrams, and I didn't notice it until a year or so after I recorded it. It will be corrected in future updates. Thanks for noticing.
