Unfortunately, the quality of service varies a lot from hospital/doctor to another. I've had multiple sclerosis for over 10 years and the service I've received has always been very high quality. But shit doctors exist everywhere, and you can be unlucky.

CICU RN here - this is INSANE! A Pulmonary Embolism is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY and needs IMMEDIATE attention! problem with conditions like aney. heart attacks, strokes, even cancer......so many don't realize it until it happens, is too late. Terrible, terrible conditions and diseases out there.

@@zencat55 Unfortunately the medical system here was extremely bogged down with covid, and in the last few years they've been bringing in a huge amount of immigrants to try to get the economy kick started again (we have the highest rate of immigration in the world now) and that's flooded the healthcare system even more, I guess because although they brought in tons of new people, they didn't bring in a proportional amount of doctors nor build enough new hospitals. It's getting pretty bad, you regularly now hear from doctors and nurses that the system is pretty much at the breaking point/already broken. Even for emergencies, you have long wait times now. There's people who have literally died because they weren't looked at in time. If you're Canadian right now all you can really do is pray you don't have an emergency situation.

@@diaryofeireann ⁠I would ask the doctor to send the request for you to do a V/Q scan to a different hospital. If one hospital rejects you so often, no use going back to them in the future. Another hospital will likely accept the request to do the V/Q scan without hesitation. ❤❤❤ stay strong and keep fighting to get the V/Q scan.

@@diaryofeireann Unfortunately that's sometimes the only way to get treatment you need. I've recently been scratched by a monkey, and only in the third hospital they treated me against rabies (prophylaxis). They said it's absolutely necessary. Imagine I hadn't kept insisting, and going somewhere else - It's a low chance I was actually infected, but if I were, it would have been fatal.

Your breathing is a serious issue and not something to take lightly. Healthcare systems these days are a JOKE, sometimes I think they'll let you die before you're properly taken care of?? Sending you all the energy and confidence to push through these unhelpful experiences. Please everyone advocate for yourself and your health❤

As a brain tumour ’survivor’ I can say the doctors don’t know all they pretend to. I was told by one doctor - that the emergency would likely refuse certain tests … and I’d have to INSIST they do it. I suggest you try that next time. Don’t let them say no! Be persistent. God Bless you. I’m praying for good results and healing for you. Amen.

There are two professions that open up a "Practice" to conduct their business. Lawyers and Doctors. Neither one guarantee their work and they both are still learning what they are doing (Practicing instead of doing). I happened upon your channel early last year and was devastated to see what you are gong through. I have my own health issues and have been challenging my health care professionals for the last 8 years. I have been proving to them every day that what they are mostly preaching 'As Medicine' is not necessary the best for the patient, i.e. ME. I have been researching and documenting my treatment plan and proving to them that they could be doing something better for those that are under their care. Good Luck and "God Bless"

yes, sometimes you have to be so pushy! and then people who are naturally non-confrontational and/or who don't have a good GP to advocate on their behalf just fall through the cracks. it's terrible and unfair. i would be in that ER telling them that every single breath i took was intentional, forced and laboured, and that i was afraid to go to sleep out of genuine concern that i might stop breathing while not consciously focusing on each breath. make sure they document exactly that. difficulty breathing is not a minor issue... what an abysmal level of care.

I'm glad you found this positive channel in this difficult time. I have a 16 year old granddaughter who has disabilities so I can only imagine how scared you all are. Be strong and don't be afraid to advocate for her!!! My daughter went toe to toe with fancy Harvard doctors when my granddaughter was on life support and they told her they respected her for it. I'm sending prayers that all works out well for your granddaughter.

@@TohEeffoc yes. There are people with hydrocephalus who have had over 100, so I’m always thankful I’ve only had 42.

The Canadian health care system is a disaster. You will find great differences between the standard of care at different hospitals. The care given by large hospitals in the greater Toronto area can be substandard simply because they are overwhelmed. I hate to say this, but if you want a higher level of care, go to a hospital in an affluent area. I would suggest Oakville Trafalgar - not too far from Toronto. I have had family members who live in the GTA who were given the run-around like you are experiencing, and they were advised to do just that. The level of care they received at Oakville Trafalgar was far higher, with more attention and they actually FIXED the problem unlike the ping-pong between doctors they experienced in the large Toronto hospitals.

Yes going to a large hospital in a bigger city will likely lead to better care than a small hospital in a small community. Care in a large teaching hospital allow you access to more specialist and more testing. Large hospitals are also used to seeing a lot of different medical issues and treating more severe conditions. Not sure it makes sense to travel to go to a different ER. The big issue will be about whether doing testing in the ER is possible. ER tries to avoid dealing with more chronic issues because ER is really there to treat, stabilize and discharge. Trying to get referred to another hospital for testing in Windsor may be a better option. Having. The surgeon request the scan versus the GP may also lead to a better response. Sadly referrals from GPs may be treated differently than from a specialist.

@@amyseaden9069 No, that's not what I said at all. She said she was having difficulty with the ER's in the Toronto hospital - and Toronto is the largest city in Canada. I'm saying that the overall level of care and attention is better in the locations I mentioned - still a big city hospital, but not part of the city core.

@@ScottsSynthStuff believe she is on South Western Ontario possibly Windsor. Level of attention and care is not always best in larger hospitals and in more wealthy areas. Really depends on the medical team you interact with but also how busy the hospital is. These larger centres give you access to higher level of care and more specialized care but they also attract patients from large surrounding areas so are often extremely busy and overwhwlemwe so you may get better care from smaller hospital. Whether you should consider going to a larger hospital in another area depends on what type of medial issue you are experiencing primarily but also has a lot to due with luck that day. Would personally never go to a trauma hospital ER unless I was a trauma patient for example although sometime unavoidable. Not an exact science. Would probably go to London if live around Windsor before Toronto.

I am so mad that you have to go through all of this back and forth. I hope all of this gets resolved soon. Prayers to you!

This is INSANE. My mum had a stroke July last year and no one in emergency took her seriously until the permanent damage was too late, she waited two days for a mri just because CT was clear. Two days later turns out she had a stroke blood clot in the brain and could have used meds. They didn’t let her sleep or eat during that time and she became so weak. This is just sad. I really hope you get help IMMEDIATELY. A blood clot is NOT a joke. Seriously. I’m praying for you.

I seriously am left totally speechless hearing the casualness of the medical people at the ER who don’t seem to think much constitutes and emergency. I have no words. It’s completely unacceptable.

I have plenty of criticism of the healthcare system but this would likely happen in most countries unless you pay out of pocket (not just have insurance). Getting a CT and blood testing (d-dimer) did happen fairly quickly. The scenario did not justify the top levels of emergency so waiting in the ER to have the CT was not surprising. Hopefully you can discuss your SOB with your surgeon. Hopefully Aerin has been able to discuss her symptoms with others who have had brain surgery and are taking the same medication to see if others have experienced similar SOB and it has been related to other issues than blood clots. It does seem like the GP involves is really great which unfortunately is not that common. Imagine if people didn’t have a GP or don’t have a good GP. Access to a GP is not just a Canada issue. There is a worldwide shortage of GPs since most medical students don’t want to be a GP and they aren’t compensated.

I live in Ontario Canada and I'm exhausted by all the doctors I've dealt with. Almost all of them don't take me seriously, it's like they don't see us as humans anymore. I have a bunch of health issues in my 20's and haven't had anyone diagnose or help figuring out why. I'm so disappointed with how some healthcare treats people

@@sallyire1 that’s awful. I’ve never had those problems. We can go to any clinic or hospital we want. We just show our health card and that’s it. No papers or billing or anything like that. If you don’t like your doctor you can find another.

Important thing to consider: Always go to the very best big teaching hospital or high-level trauma center with issues like your breathing ... and anything else. They will have the most experienced doctors and the equipment necessary to diagnose you. Going to an urgent care can sometimes eat up those precious minutes before a diagnosis can be made -- and you will probably need to go to a big hospital anyway.

@@diaryofeireann Yes, please don't hesitate going to a research-oriented hospital at a large university or city. An ER is not unlike your general practitioner in that they are generalists. Yes, they deal with life-and-death decision making daily, however, they lack the depth of any expert in any one area. So, after researching the best expert in pulmonary care (or any other specialty), hit the road! Even if that means coming down to the States for care. You are NOT receiving the best care when time is TRULY of the essence. 🙏

Where I lived we were 9 hours away from one the best hospital’s in America. Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Many people from my local area make the trip there, even if it means driving many hours to get there…because we knew they were top notch at diagnosis. Personal story: our local hospital gave up on my Mom and refused to try to save her life. (It wasn’t a blood clot) Said there was nothing else they could do. We headed to Mayo’s with her. They did the surgery she needed to save her life even if it was risky and she may lose her life….but we had no choice but to try. There were three possible outcomes: it worked and her life would be saved, the surgery may be successful, but she may lose her limbs, or she may die. She had to have surgery on an artery in her abdomen that affected her kidneys. Good news: it was successful, with no limbs lost. She lived another 10 years. There are countless stories from my local area where lives were saved due to proper medical diagnoses and care. In some cases, people get life-flighted there in a plane or helicopter. Advice: Go and travel where you need to! Although if it’s a blood clot, traveling may be tricky. A blood clot can be an acute emergency. I am shocked how the hospitals are treating you 😢😡

I had a blood clot in my lung post surgery, I had extreme pain, couldn't even talk when the pain peaked just hunched over gasping. I went to an emergency department and I actually didn't think it was a lung problem, I thought it was kidney pain as I had tumours in my kidneys, my BP, pulse and O2 sats were ok when I arrived but when the pain got really bad they took the O2 sats monitor off saying "you don't need that any more. I was discharged home with a diagnosis of kidney infection, but it just kept getting worse so I ended up calling an ambulance as the pain was so bad I couldn't breathe, I was given morphine and oxygen in the ambulance so when I arrived at the ED my observations were all not too bad. It was an extremely busy night in emergency and I sat in a chair waiting for a bed for about an hour, my oxygen saturation would drop very low without the oxygen but they decided they needed the bed I was in so they moved me too and armchair that wasn't allocated a nurse specifically (usually used for people with non acute problems waiting for results. Anyway after 6 hours not seeing a doctor and again in severe pain I asked for pain relief and was given endone, a few hours later I was still in pain and still hadn't been seen, so I asked if I was going to be seen by a doctor or should I just go home. I was seen about 30 mins later and basically told I had cancer and there was nothing they could do except give me a script for pain killers ( by now it was 5am on Sunday morning in a small rural town so no pharmacies were open) so I called my husband and we went home. I had booked an appointment with my GP for the next day and in the morning I rang my oncology team who told me to go to the emergency room immediately, I said no I would see my GP as he might actually listen to me. My observations were so out of whack by the time I saw my GP he rang an ambulance and sent me to the ED with a letter saying I needed a lung scan for pulmonary embolism. After a couple of hours where the ED doctor was arguing that I didn't need a scan my GP rang to find out why I hadn't had a scan and put pressure on them to do the scan which the ED docor reluctantly did. She wasn't happy when the scan showed I had a clot in my lung and also had a plural effusion (collection of fluid) and so collapse at the base of my lung! I was admitted to hospital and started on blood thinners. That was over 4 years ago and I'm glad to say I've been in remission from my stage IV cancer since then. I'm still on blood thinners as no one is game to take me offf them. Anyway just thought it was a similar experience to yours. I hope you get answers soon, all the best, Jeni.

I've been getting sharp shooting pains in the right side of my head recently and may require a mri scan but so scared to get the contrast due to all the scary stories about gadolinium :(

I am very concerned for you. So scary. Pulmonary Embolism is an absolute emergency. I almost died from multiple ones from my blood clotting disorder. Between that, covid, and asthma my lungs haven't been the same. I'm only thirty-seven. I am not trying to scare anyone, but definitely not something to play around with. Continued prayers my friend.

Éireann - thank you for sharing your story. I urge that wherever you go, please wear an N95 respirator as SARS-CoV-2 transmission has been extremely high lately. A SARS-CoV-2 infection could derail your health and has strong potential to cause further complications down the road. Stay safe out there and we are all holding up hope for you.

She can hardly breathe as it is. An N95 would prevent enough oxygen getting to her lungs. Plus, haven't you read the studies? Masking does not prevent infection.

Your series of videos should be a must watch for every doctor and hospital admin for how not to treat patients. I can't believe you've had to go through so much to get the medical tests you need.

Hi, not a doctor, just a nurse, but I really don't recommend taking medications from friends or family, without doctor's prescription. Also one very common negative side effect of ventolin is tachycardia and heart palpitations, which could just worsen the feeling in your chest. Also could put unnecesary pressure on your heart, which may already be struggling due to the blood clot. You need a diagnosis soon and blood thinning medication if necessary. Also would not recommend excessive excercise until you know for sure, you don't have a blood clot. Sorry if I sound harsh. (also, English is not my first language, so sorry). Also good luck in your journey.

Young people tend to be able to compensate for some loses in their lung capacity (oxygen saturation) with increased heart function. Also, nobody is saying it's for sure a blood clot. However I do think there's room for caution, and not using unprescribed medication is generally a good advice for all people. @@michellegeorges8560

I had to wait 9 months to be seen by a neurologist in California. The world’s 5th largest economy. I had additional 2 grand mal seizures in the interim. One causing a significant head injury. Following you and sending you prayers. ❤

Hi! I live in the Netherlands and I've had blood clots in both lungs three weeks ago. Breathing was really hard and painfull. A part of my lung died because a blood clot got stuck. I had to go on bloodthinners right away and had to stay in the hospital for five days. I hope they help you soon, because the doktor told me that blood clots can demage your lungs and heart. I’m soooo sorry you are going thru this. I had similar nightmare with a colon issue in Texas USA. I fell thru the cracks in our USA healthcare (( I have great medical insurance)) and was misdiagnosed, sent for tests that came back normal ….. and what I had was not normal, nonetheless when I finally got the proper test and surgery , the specialist said …. As your experience points out this is not a socialized medicine issue. It has to do about how healthcare is set up. In most cases there is no patient coordinator the patient or their family is the coordinator. First thing I tell people is that if you get sick or have a family/friend get sick is that they need to find someone who has a medical background or who can do medical research or else you are screwed.

Thats pretty shocking them not prioritising someone struggling to breathe... you know one of the most vital parts of staying alive. Hopefully you get some answers soon and can get properly on the mend Éireann because all the extra stress and anxiety on top of physically dealing with it all must be so exhausting. Fingers crossed for a positive update next time we see you!

Worrying in many ways, from the lack of urgency with the medical professionals to the stress this must be putting you under. The GP seems to have your back but is being hindered by the system. I hope they get to the bottom of this problem soon. Keep smiling your strength is inspiring.

Eireann, this comment is from someone who is living with chronic anxiety and panic attacks. I know how real the shortness of breath feels from anxiety, i have been to the ER many times thinking that i had a heart attack or a blood clot or whatnot, and it was nothing. What i am saying is, before doing further scans, have you tried taking a xanax? It is easy to do and it would rule out any anxiety related issues. You have been under a lot of stress lately, and with a clean CT and a clean blood test and after 10 weeks, it really seems unlikely that you have a blood clot. And i dont mean to downplay that what you feel is real, its just sometimes our brains can play tricks on us and it is very convincing. Im rooting for you and hoping that you dont have a blood clot or anything else thats serious!!! Hugs!!!

I would be so upset, I'd be crying(among other things). I'm an old(63yo) redheaded woman, which means I'm hot tempered...Give me one minute with all of them but especially with the one that said "it's not their job..." It's deplorable that we have to advocate for ourselves or we don't get the proper care that we, as patients deserve...AND NEED. I'm worried that if GOD forbid the brain tumor is cancer and NOTHING is being done(besides the operation)...10 weeks. That's ten weeks of treatment you could have had already.!!! I came across your videos by sheer chance, and have just worked my way through all of them. I can't tell you how sad I feel that you should be facing this at such a young age with so much of your life ahead of you and so much to offer the world. It's astonishing and hugely to your credit that you are constantly thinking of others in a similar situation and how watching your videos may be be affecting them. Absolutely shocking. I am also a Registered Nurse and a blood clot in the lungs is a medical emergency. The simple fact that you are short of breath and struggling to breathe in general needs to be addressed especially after having brain surgery. I certainly hope you get it sorted before it becomes a medical emergency. I pray that you get some answers regarding your tumor and your lungs. I can’t believe that after 10 weeks you still don’t know!🙏

Canadian healthcare sucks. I've been having this immense brain fog for the past year (2023 onward) and having these "brain zap" symptoms for around the same time. Took me 6 months to convince my family doctor to refer me to a neurologist and finally have an appointment in Feb. I'll be in EU on vacation at that time but it's an online video appointment so it should be fine. Sorry you had to go through all this drama!

@@blooey2 yep I tested fine for those. When I was a kid I did have B12 deficiency and required injections but that was 15 years ago. I've had quite a few head CTs (once when I was a baby and fell out of a shopping cart and had to be revived, once as a teenager as I was having issues of almost passing out and losing vision, another time was hit by a car when riding a bike, and twice in recent years due to thunderclap headaches which after the second CT I was diagnosed with migraines.) Part of the reason I found this channel actually is because I became paranoid I might have a brain tumor from all the radiation of CTs haha

Oh my gosh, you are really being tested way beyond the limit. That ER definitely seems like a place to avoid - why on earth didn't the staff know the difference between acute and chronic blood clots? @@diaryofeireannnot sure if you have had any other history with the medical system but this is very normal no matter where in the world. It tends to be a bit better if you are a child or if your disease/condition has their own clinic. Cancer care in Ontario for example has much better organization and follow-up than other condition as for example but given your current status you aren’t quite part of the cancer care Ontario system. You seem to have a good GP who is advocating for you too and trying to get your test scheduled so your medical team is also advocating for you as well.

@@diaryofeireann I micromanage my own medical issues in Ontario and I have a rare unknown form of muscular dystrophy. Luckily I have medical knowledge or else I would be screwed. I have been the one micromanaging my own care. It is standard while in Canada or abroad. Cancer is the one condition that gets more follow-up, access to nurses, etc. compared to most other condition/ although you are not part of the cancer system like others who have entered a more typical treatment course like chemo/radiation already. If in contact with your surgeon or you see him in person he may have a better chance of success getting your test scheduled versus your GP especially in the same hospital system where he works. Would try that. You may also want to discuss with your GP whether you should consider treatment (blood thinner) even though you haven’t had a concrete diagnosis. You may have even been receiving a blood thinner in hospital and maybe even after your returned home after your surgery. Best of luck I know it is very frustrating but there are limitations of the medical system and especially given the very high amounts of various respiratory viruses. The ER is not a good place to try and address chronic health issues. It is not set up to deal with the this and is typically not a great way to try and access testing because it is taking too long to access testing other ways. Many who try to do this are denied in the ER. Sounds a bit cheesy but when you get really discouraged I would think about what would happen if you didn’t have such a great GP or were one of the millions without a GP. You seem to have had a great neurosurgeon and have had surgery relatively quickly so also something positive to think about. You also were able to get your OHIP in time to access all this care. Many are in Canada or in other countries without access to healthcare that they didn’t have to pay for (I know we do pay taxes so healthcare isn’t free). I can only imagine others being told that it will be many hundreds for thousands of dollars if you want to have surgery. You also seem to have a very supportive family and friends. I often think of others who don’t have any support and are in hospital or going through huge medical issues without any support and I can only imagine how difficult that it must be. I am probably overly cheery because I was very sick last week and ended up in the ER and with 2 other specialist appointment. Your life being unpredictable and medicalized is hard for others to really understand. Hopefully you will get answers about pathology this week. Just knowing should helps to know mentally what will be your treatment and prognosis. People underestimate how just knowing what your diagnosis is is so important even if it won’t change anything. It also legitimizes you in the eyes of the medical system. Sadly if you look good and put together the medical system may not be as concerned about your SOB and breathing so would also dress how you feel when going to the ER.

You have such poise and grace under such stressful situations. I have so much respect for the way you handle everything that's been thrown your way. Praying you get all of your bad health issues taken care of now and only have amazing health in the future. ❤🙏

pro tip: when you go to dr, clinic, ER etc dont wear makeup and get fixed up too nice. they see a young woman looking good and think you arent sick or in need of urgent help. you made it through video without seeming short of breath. when short of breath you cant make it through a sentence. emphasizing the pressure you feel in your chest was key. please pursue a cardiac workup and continue to emphasize difficulty breathing. to get proper care you need to “play up” your symptoms. i known that sounds wrong but doctors only go on what they see.

You are very strong and very brave! You must be your own biggest advocate and don’t let them go over you with their policies and nonsense.

I'm not a doctor but my mother-in-law had that pressure on her chest and it turned out to be fluid buildup around her lungs. In her case, her heart was not pumping enough blood to her kidneys due to aortic valve stenosis and consequently the kidneys were not extracting the excess fluid from her blood fast enough. So the fluid had nowhere to go and it seeped out of her blood vessels into the cavity around her lungs. She was 93 so the vessel walls were already thin to begin with. Her kidneys were functioning properly; there just wasn't enough blood flow. It's great that socialized medicine covers everybody, but this is the downside to it. In the US, as messed up as our healthcare system is, with doctors not coordinating with each other and costs out-of-control, at least you wouldn't have to wait weeks to be seen.

Everyone I know in my area who's needed to see a doctor in an emergency situation can get one in within days, except during covid when the system was overwhelmed. The problem we have in the US is that many insurance companies require pre-approval and that's where the holdup is. For example, if your doctor tells you, you need a hip replacement, your insurance might tell you to try physical therapy first or might even deny to pay for the procedure altogether. Then the next problem is the specialists don't talk to each other. It's up to your primary care physician to coordinate the care or in a hospital, the hospitalist. The latter is what most people are never told about, but this person is crucial to get information on what's wrong with you. In my mother-in-law's case, we had a fantastic hospitalist who figured out what the underlying issue really was, and had an explanation for it. Finally, in the US you can never get a straight answer as to what a procedure will cost, so you really can't shop around. You get all these bills, which you're not supposed to pay until the insurance companies have processed them. They give you an Explanation of Benefits which is confusing to read. That's why I say the US system is a mess and needs to be cleaned up.

So sorry you’re going through all this I really really hope you get some good news soon praying for you and your family
