BLOCK MOD INSTALL ON MY MK2 FOCUS ST | DID I LEAVE IT TOO LATE?
In this video, I took a road trip to BD Performance in Wrexham to get the most spoken about engine modification for the Mk2 Focus ST the " Block Mod".
Since the production of the Mk2 ST225, the most common problem was always the allusive Block Mod, these cars were very prone to cracked liners, and the one way to " Help " combat this was to get the Block Mod upgrade. Doing so can further reduce the likelihood of a cracked liner resulting in either a new engine or a complete rebuild which would very expensive.
If you own a Mk2 Focus ST then getting this done is very important especially if you plan on seeing big power in the future.
There are plenty of garages across the country that can do this for you, however, if your able to get there then BD Performance is the place to be.

Good to see you got it done, you can chase some real power now without having that niggling thought in the back of your head. Still need to get mine done but mechanics here in OZ charge big, last quote was over 3 grand but that included studs and gaskets may even bite the bullet and do it myself. I will get it done eventually but got other priorities at the moment, somehow my rims got buckled but I have absolutely no idea how it happened so I have a constant vibration that drives me up the wall after a while so new rims will be first up.

I really need to get my ST block modded but scared that they will say I’ve got a cracked liner lol. I had my Revo stage 2 done there and other bits and can say these guys know what they are talking about and very helpful.

Jordan .s what’s age got to do with it? Suppose mine is a show car and really proud of what I’ve made. Oily bolts all over my plastics would really piss me off. TBH I would have thought better of BD.

Callum L Like I said only a visual, maybe they did. Mine s polished black and doin that would have scratched. TBH I don’t trust any garage, I’d rather work on it myself. Too many bad experiences which is probably why I noticed it. I know his ain’t a garage queen but then BD don’t know that.
Is nobody else concerned about the use of an abrasive pad on the top of the liners? How did he clean the debris out of the cylinders??

most probably some breeze of compressed air first and shoot with brake cleaner. But I see your point.. it takes 2 mins to cover cylinders and water jackets with shop towels and I would do it on any car while head is off.

Bigger question is why didn't they yank the motor and rebore after shimming between the cylinders. You've just deformed the top into an oval by 2-3 thousandths.
Any reason for 5w40 instead of 0w40? I know everyone recommends 0w40 on modified engines.

It is funny how similar it is to my Volvo 850R once you start taking it to bits. (I know it is the Volvo B5254T)

Far as i am concerned and the info i know from mechanics, stock power focus st mk2 is good without a block mod unless u do any power mods on it or rev it and hooligan it while cold. Actually one mechanic even told me stage 1 still doesnt need the mod up to 290hp. Please let me know if i am wrong because i am looking for an st to buy soon.

GCM confidence along with the ability to keep your subject calm. You describe the content in a professional precise way, even if you are not sure what’s going on you are honest about it. You should pursue this avenue if you can. i am sure you’re channel will build and build. Time to step it up do more interviews with sports car owners maybe
i just did mines... forged pistons rods..arp bolts..block mods with bolts added..yours look like a cheap fix..but good for you👍

Is that the same calipers on your Focus that you painted earlier this year? Did the lacquer you put on that brush on paint hold up or react or anything?

Naa mate. I took off those ones I painted as the job was bodge as hell ! These are the e30 Brembo converged big breaks :)

How long did the block mod take? My local is claiming 10+ hours plus a pressure test.

I kinda don't understand the shimming of the wet liners. Peugeot have used wet liner engines for over 50 years and I have never used shims in a rebuild. (MI16 1.9l Twin Cam XU9J4) are the ford (Volvo) liners thinner?

The aluminum the liner sits in is very weak in the area between liners because Ford created a small channel there, high HP and heat causes the material to deform/move under stress and the liners crack as a result. The usdm focus rs has the same design flaw because Ford thought the cylinders needed extra cooling. The engine design was later changed here to correct the issue by making it a unbroken casting and cross angle drilling a coolant channel instead.
For what it's worth kms motorsport in Wigan. Forge these for 4500. Just get it forged then it's built to last. And take some serious power. These block Mods still don't stop the liners from cracking. The liners where too thin to begin with. Save your money get it forged with Darton sleeves

Does the head gasket not require sealant or is it just a crush fit seal?

Most head gaskets are mls now, they crush deform when you torque the head down and are onetime use.

Wrong mounting direction of the Brembo calipers !!! BMW e38 4-piston calipers are direction calipers because they have different pistons sizes. Here they should be mounted upside down.

It closes off the thin channels between cylinders. The cylinder wall is thinnest where the channels run and can crack, then you're f'ed.

They have done projects better than this over the past 6 years so what's the excuse now? So BD, if you are apparently so amazing, why do you ignore all messages and just leave NAUGHTY to rot? The car you were so enthusiastic about but since elsewhere did better, you abandoned her.

That is strange, with them being such a big company and quite well respected in the ford community you would think they wouldn’t want to mess up there reputation... just a thought for you if your sending mail send it recorded delivery that way you have proof of delivery of the mail.
Its the cam followers balancing on a piece of wood on a cart .One knock they go all over the floor.At least block mod all done.
