Block Control Without Relays Or Detectors? Lionel Style Train Control!

Episode 88: There are dozens of ways to provide non-colliding block control for toy trains automatically: relays, computers, detection circuits, and more. But what if there was a way to do it with just a simple contact, 2 lockons, 2 insulating pins, and some wire?
There is! And Lionel devised this creative solution in the 1950's!
Note: Please excuse the poor camera handling and distorted audio. I had to use my backup system to get this one finished. I should be back to my primary equipment for the next episode.
Thanks for watching!!

I just picked up a Contractor set and was able to get this working using a Type S transformer. Took a few hours to tweek, many thanks to you and this video!

Thanks for the demonstration and the info, especially about the multi-volt feature and how one transformer can apply different levels of power to different sections of track all at the same time...this would also be useful when wiring graduated trestles where you always need more power going up hill versus coming down the other side (assuming your trains were always going in the same direction) it should work quite well. Yes. It's a common trick on grades to add higher power upgrade and lower power downgrade. If trains are bidirectional on the grade a relay could help determine which power level to use each time.

Stop at station variation a normally off section where the train always stops. Then a half dozen sections before a 153 triggers the stopped train to go.

I tried this years ago using a 132 station, a bit different idea- I tried to use the 132's "switch" and a contactor to control two turnouts..but I never got it to work right (ended up frantically throwing the 2 turnouts manually to allow the following train to bypass the sidng the 132 was on)...I thought I needed relays, but your video has got me thinking again...LOL Thanks.

I wired mine using the other terminal on the 153c. This means the train will stop (in my case at a 90 degree crossing). Once the second train passes the crossing it rolls over the 153c activator and turns on the track at the crossing. Always plenty of distance between the two trains.
