On most derby builds the factory rearend is pulled out and a stronger one such as a ford 9" or Dana 60-80 is installed.... There is a regular brake rotor installed with a caliper on the pinion where stopping forces are greater working with the rear end ratios,.. Example: Its actually easier to stop the drive shaft with this 4 to 1 ratio than the wheels themselves, ..Also eaiser to turn the back wheels with this 4 to 1 ratio or 5 to 1 (..IE..four turns of the driveshaft to one turn of the wheel..) This is common gearing on all motor cars,. .. On derby cars and other motorsport rigs,There is a aftermarket "spool" installed to lock the axles together getting "posi" traction where stopping the pinion with this "brake caliper and rotor" will stop both wheels... The common motor car has a differential which allows you to turn corners with the demand of the wheels going at different speeds because the outside tire turns more than the inside.. also putting forces to the greater wheel of traction when you mash the throttle..Thus forcing the carmakers to put brakes on both wheels and to secure safety measures instead of this easy pinion brake system...( You will have to study "automotive differentials explained" on You Tube... ) This aftermarket spool replaces that differential... A good example of this braking system is to go to a old time thrashing show and find an Old John Deere "A" or"B" Tractor,..They have a brake drum at each wheel that is spun at a 10 to 1 ratio of the back wheel speed with 2 brake pedals to stop either wheel with ease rather than trying to stop a tractor wheel with some sort of braking force.... If you watch these old John Deeres in action and watch the exposed brake drums turn, you will catch on to this theory .... This is how I learned it back when I was the US President in 1959... Peace..

At 8:35 what kind of rear end is that? I am really curious about the build of these rigs. Curious about the rotor on the diff. Any willing too give some info on them??
