Actually, the term "break a leg" originates from how people used to do an applause. People used to stomp their feet as an applause, as opposed to today's clapping of hands. So if a performance was good enough, during the applause, someone may stomp their feet hard enough to supposedly "break a leg". So "break a leg" is another way to say "do a good performance". It has absolutely nothing to do with luck.
