    You call the "lost accessories" spell the most convenient thing to date but remember: he's an accessory merchant, from a village that seems to specialize in accessories, who frequently lose accessories. I'd rank "we found a genius priest in a quicksand pit and half a day later required a genius priest to save our warrior" higher on the convenience scale.

    Eh, it makes you wonder what qualifies as an "accessory". Magic recognizes the "inventory and equipment" a person is supposed to have? A lot of magic in anime is weirdly game-ified, outside of a game. Maybe if it was a metal detection spell.

  • @FortyTheAlien

    @FortyTheAlien

    @aquasis995 i dunno if you've finished the anime or what but without spoiling much, its been said that magic largely depends on user perception. If the user considers hats to be accesories, then the accessory finding spell with find hats. This means that even a standardized spell would probably work differently between mages.

    Something about the title: Sousou no Frieren more closely translates to “Frieren at the funeral” or “Frieren at the burial.” The title makes sense in the context of Himmel’s funeral. However, the phrase “sousou” can also be a play on words for a rarely used context which would translate to “Frieren, the funeral” or “Frieren, who buries you.” This is where Frieren the Slayer came from. Pretty neat, but I agree that Beyond Journey’s End is more fitting in a way.

    Honestly, your take on this series being hard to dislike hits right on. I think it’s especially the case since it revolves around relationships and the human experience (ironically through an elf who lives far beyond a human’s life), which is something any human can relate with.

    At first I also thought that the finding items spell is plot convenience. But in future episodes they introduce the idea of spells developed by people based on the environment they are dealing with. And then this spell made sens since the merchant is from village of traders. Its completely logical for them to develop such spell to find lost items they trade.

    "Sousou no Frieren" has double meaning, it means Frieren at the funeral (implicating eternal life losing friends) or Frieren the Undertaker (implication being Slayer) just like Shingeki no kyoujin means "Attack on titan" or "The attack titan" . one is spoilery so the other stays i think

    I don't think the finding spell is plot convenience. The Merchant is coming from village of traders. And the show is explaining several times that spells are created by people for their convenience to handle their needs (1st exam). Thus its normal for people from such village to create such spell because as traders they tend to lose things.

    The following is going to sound a bit ranty. I only realized after I wrote it all. Please don't take it like that, it's just me being sleep deprived and writing down my thoughts. Also, I'm glad you're enjoying the show, it's definitely one of the best written shows I've seen to date. I'm going to disagree with you on the find accessory spell being *too* convenient. We've already established that this world has a lot of old, random, mundane spells. Frieren literally goes from village to village collecting spells that do a single very specific thing. It's absolutely believable that an Accessory store owner would have a spell like that on-hand. Is it convenient that the merchant they were travelling with was an Accessory store owner? Sure. Is it an obvious plot convenience? Absolutely. Is it totally out of left field and unbelievable for the world we've been shown? Not at all. The author found a way to insert their solution to a problem in this mini-arc that is fully believable and explainable with the world-building and lore that has already been established. I do, however, believe it could have been presented a bit smoother. The "oh, here's a spell for that!" does seem contrived at first look. Maybe if the merchant paid the spell to Sein ahead of time when they were fixing the wagon and Frieren wasn't there, then we'd know about the spell a bit beforehand and it'd be easier to swallow when Frieren learns about it.

    an important thing to recognise with the japanese title, an all japanese titles in general, its not so straightforward as to have a single translation like "frieren the slayer". Sousou also means to attend a funeral service/see off the deceased, which is much more in line with the actual story. "the slayer" is more a sort of wordplay/double meaning.

    "sousou no frieren" can also mean "frieren at the funeral." the meaning of the series seems obvious when the first episode is her at the funeral, and the rest of the show is her processing her grief. however, in the context of frieren the slayer, it can mean "frieren, who sends you to your grave." a very cool double meaning, which made episode 8 a mic drop moment when you realize theres more to the name!

    14th episode just proved to me that Frieren is not an anime. It's live action show which just happens to be an anime! 1st - We have the ring shown in 2 previous episodes. We have the set up that its important but Frieren does not remember it. 2nd - The bell at the beginning of the episode. Foreshadowing what would happen while also starting the process of memory returning to Frieren. 3rd - The way the object finding spell is presented. An illuminating light on a dark sky just before dawn - like a memory coming back in ones' mind before its fully reviled. 4th - The big pay-off. The scene with the clock tower standing between Himmel and Frieren, symbolizing time. And the shadows behind the two of them representing how much of their life have passed. 5th - And to wrap things up a mirroring relationship between Fern/Stark and Himmel/Frieren. Fern's ring having a blossoming mirrored lotus symbolizing that her love with STark would happen. While Frieren's one a mirrored bulb lotus symbolizing that her love with Himmel would never do. And to add to this we have the quote "I am used to losing things", not only referring to the ring but to people, the lyrics of the ED which is Frieren's letter to the ones she have lost throughout her life... This level of story telling, set ups and pay-offs, the "show don't tell" way of crafting a story is not common for animes. It's common for real-live elite level shows like "Breaking Bad", "Game of thrones season 1-4", etc.

    There are plenty of anime that do this and there are even more "elite" TV shows of established billion dollar IPs such as Star Wars that completely botch setups and payoffs. Hell, they even fail to have a coherent story or likable characters. Speaking of Game of Thrones, that completely fell apart too. Yes it indeed started strong, but it finished in a complete train wreck. This really has nothing to do with the medium, which is what anime is. You can make a good anime, a good cartoon, a good animated movie or a good live action TV show. Just the same you can make a garbage one, and most TV shows are in fact garbage. The percentage of bad to good is likely even worse than anime.

    You dont watch much anime do you? There are plenty of anime with great stories with great setups, and payoffs. Frieren is on another level because of its' depth but there have been some animes that are on an equal level (though I do admit they are rare). Steins Gate and Clannad come to mind immediately.Even more so in live action shows, this level of greatness is the exception, not the norm.

    agree, "Frieren the slayer" doesn't suit the anime. It gives an action vibes while action is rare. Also its more satisfying to see her scary side unexpectedly than wait for it the whole anime. An interesting thing - in Russian they translated it something like "Frieren, escorting to the last journey". And whole anime it feels like it means she outlives her companions, but than Lügner episode comes and he says "o yeah, I remember now, Frieren, escorting to the last journey". And you get hit by double meaning. That was very cool, wonder is this how it was intended.
