If the guy was any kind of reputable, this dog would be evidence of a mistake, well-taken care of, and the causes of that mistake /sterilized not killed/. Double Dapple /is/ possible, but low-ethics people do not do the dna tests( or even try to know the traits that are evidence of an issue) to confirm the chances of defects and just breed because, hey, a bullet to the brainstem costs less than a dollar, while the tests cost multiple hundreds. We should be lucky this guy surrendered the dog at all, likely paying respect to his wife. Without breeders /we don't have breeds/. Some dogs just do a job better, like IED dogs protecting soldiers, or heelers for herding cattle. At the same time, people like this need to fucking go.

    For anyone wondering about the genetics at play here, the double dapple coat for many breeds is only accomplished by inbreeding. The white coat you see on her is a strong indicator of severe inbreeding and both blindness and deafness are common in such weak genetic pairings. Boxers, dachshunds, Great Danes are several examples where if you see “unique, expensive” color patterns outside of the traditional single or two distinct patterns, they are indicators of inbreeding and you should not support the purchase.

  • @Marie-cp6ue

    @Marie-cp6ue

    2 жыл бұрын

    Uhhh, this is largely misinformation. If we're being technical: the genetically correct term is homozygous merle, and it's caused by breeding two dogs with the merle gene. It is NOT caused by inbreeding: if you breed two merle dogs (unrelated or not), there is a 25% chance in each of the puppies that they will be homozygous merle. Obviously inbreeding increases the chance though. There is nothing wrong purchasing a merle puppy if one of the parents is *not* merle (e.i a black or cream dog); they should be perfectly healthy. Assuming the breeder did the appropriate screening and health tests, of course. I'll add that merle is not a naturally occurring pattern in Boxers and any "merle boxer" is in fact a mixed breed. A good breeder will not charge more for a certain pattern (proper Great Dane breeders will charge you just as much for a black dog as a merle). If you see someone charging based on colour/pattern, it's a scam.

    @@Marie-cp6ue Thank you for pointing out the misinformation! I looked into it because of the OP comment and was about to cite sources stating the double dapple coat is due to the merle gene, NOT inbreeding. Because the gene is so rare, some unethical breeders may choose to inbreed pups from a litter with the gene to try to generate more pups with the same rare trait, and that is problematic as well, causing health problems. HOWEVER, the gene itself is know to cause health problems and defects, prominently missing eyes and deafness (ie: "Double Dapple Dachshund: Double Trouble" on Alpha Paw's website). It is the health reasons associated with the gene that cause the trait to be controversial. Inbreeding itself is controversial, but NOT inherently why the double dapple coat merle gene is controversial.

  • @Marie-cp6ue

    @Marie-cp6ue

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@NasikaSakura Yeah, it's a pretty unfortunate case all around. Nearly everyone finds merle to be an attractive pattern, so it's being introduced to many breeds purely for aesthetics and causing needless health issues (not to mention it's off-standard and a blatant money grab, but health is the biggest concern).

    Abra Cadavra yeah it always makes me lose some respect for people when they buy dogs and really just want a pet like anybody else, so they have no excuse for needing a bigger selection of dogs than they would have with rescue organizations. I particularly hate how many people insist on getting puppies, because they want a puppy more than they want a dog. nobody should get any pet for how they are as a baby, because for most of their lives they won't be babies, so anybody who ONLY wants to get a puppy and not an adult dog should not have any dog in my opinion. in fact given how lazy most people are compared to dogs, I'd say that for half of them an old dog or a dog with a movement-impairing disability would be ideal to get the dogs and humans on the same page in regards to the length and speed of the walkies.

    This lady was trying to make the situation seem more dramatic so she would look like a big hero. It's obvious the dog was well taken care of by the previous owners. The fact the dog sat on the husband's foot and licked his face right away is proof the dog wasn't mistreated by the previous male owner, even though the current owner is going to great lengths to demonize him. Not a very classy move on her part.

    I adopted a 15 year dachshund that had cataracts, and was hard of hearing. He was such cuddle bunny. We loved him so much. But even with his sight and hearing gone, his scent was good as ever! When I fried bacon, he would perk up and start barking. Oh yes he got some! 🥓 So happy for this sweet baby. Thank you for giving her such a great life.

    This is why we should adopt, not shop. The high prices that are charged for rare color patterns or body shapes only encourages unscrupulous breeders. With so many puppers in shelters needing a home, there is no reason to purchase, unless you need a specific working dog and none is available for adoption.

    Yes in theory, but I have frriends in chicago that tried to adopt for 2 years and got practically "scammed" by shelters. They are DOCTORS, good earners, have schedules with someone always at home,. live in a building with a dog park, THey did all the paperwork, and they CHARGED them every time they posted they where interested in a dog, $25 bucks, another dog, $50 more, Nop sorry dog got adopted by someone else. Nop sorry we are looking for a family with a big backyard. They spent about $1000 in submission fees over 2 years, drove miles to meet dogs that where "sorry someone else adopted it". They felt scammed, and they ended up buying a dog. They didn't want to buy it, they just wanted a dog and shelters made it VERY difficult for them

    @@lobogryz8501we have breed standards to ensure all dogs of the same breed look the same for health and safety reasons. This ensures that each generation of the breed is healthier and better behaved than the last. Breed standards are used in dog shows and competitions and by Kennel Clubs. There’s plenty of information on the internet if you want to read about it, I suggest going onto the AKC site to learn more. A lot of people demonise the word ‘breeders’ because they are associated with *backyard* breeders. The difference is: Responsible breeders -Don’t breed mixed breeds -Spend their time dedicated to one breed, learning about their breed standards and specific health risk -Compete in dog shows/grooming competitions (think of it as a hobby. These people don’t get money for competing, they do it because they love the breed and the dog likes the show) -Will have contracts for each dog, stating what registry the puppy is being adopted under (if the dog can compete in dog shows and breed or if it must simply be kept as a pet and be desexed) -Has an application process to ensure the dogs they produce will go to their forever home to owners that are actually able to provide for it and are capable of training it -Dedicates time to desensitising and socialising the litter so that they aren’t anxious when they’re older Back yard breeders -Don’t compete in dog shows -Cab produce mixed breeds and pure breds -Don’t breed to industry standard -Don’t have contracts and/or an application process -Don’t socialise their litters -Aren’t using healthy dogs suited to breeding -Will breed because either a) they have a desexed dog (that was probably backyard bred) and figure they could breed it for fun b) to make money and/or c) because they think having puppies would be cute and they’re unaware that they’re putting those dogs in danger Dogs from backyard breeders often end up in the pound because they owners they went to we’re not dedicated to owning them, and had no contractual obligation to give them back to their breeder. Backyard breeders (and puppy mills) are the cause for dog over population, because they don’t see the problem first hand like people in the dog industry. They’re only concerned about the money and themselves. They are not concerned for their breed. I’m a dog groomer, I’m able to see the difference first hand. People don’t understand the difference between backyard breeders and responsible breeders, and therefore don’t see the red flags. Dogs and puppies that come in from backyard breeders are very obvious because they have anxiety issues, aren’t well socialised, excitable, and are badly behaved during the grooming process. I hope this clarifies things! :)
