Bliain in Inis Oírr Episode 1
Inis Oírr lies 6 miles off the coast of Connemara. With over 250 inhabitants it is the smallest of the three Aran Islands. While embracing progress and change, this rocky outpost has managed to retain much of its traditional island way of life. Inhabited by communities whose everyday language is Irish, the Aran Islands are immediately striking for being a desert of rock where there is scarcely any shelter, no mountains or woodland to be found. What pasture there is has been largely man made. James Joyce once wrote that these islands could be the place to go to find the real Ireland -- something that has particular resonance today. Filmed from January to December 2010, "Bliain In Inis Oírr" is a four part series that follows a diverse mix of individuals living on the island. From new-comers to those who have lived there for generations, audiences will be given an insight to day-to-day island life and the reasons why each of these people has chosen to make this magical, yet harsh, place their home. Each of the four episodes features one particular season, highlighting seasonal activities and festivals as well as the passage of time through the changing weather and vegetation of the island.

I'd really love it if they made another one of these to show how life on the Island has changed (if at all) over the last ten years

To many foreigners now diluting our ancient culture
This is just brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Very interesting, intriguing, special & very educational. The lady who rethatched the roof, just Wow!!! A very special skill & she did an amazing & beautiful job. My Irish Uncle was telling me recently, in "his exact words", "that more Thatching jobs are urgently sought after these days, so I do hope that more young Irish men & women, will be trained by the very few, to give the job a try & all the while, maintaining a very important & beautiful part of Ireland's culture/heritage. Otherwise, the very sad, but slow disappearance of the traditional thatched cottages as we all know them to be, may eventually become just a distant memory. Many of the older generation have passed away, so more young men/women are now required, to take on the job that our ancestors did every day. It's an expensive upkeep & insurance companies won't cover thatched roofs, with the exception of only 1 or 2 companies abound". As the daughter of Irish/Scottish parents, this girl's always loved her family's ancestral homeland & this viewing has truly made my day! I once lived/worked in India, but with now living in Australia, this influenced me to start learning hard, the Irish language & I do so, because of my own ancestral ties to Éire & Because I wish, to be one of the smaller percentage of people globally, who wishes to maintain/preserve such a beautiful & ancient language. To maintain one's early traditions & culture is very important, because if ever lost, it's forever gone. Later this year, we'll be heading to Éire, then onto the Aran Islands, as I've longed to visit the Aran Islands for over 20 yrs now. Finally, my dream will come to fruition. go raibh maith agat as a roinnt.❤
i would love to see some picture of what it has become. i m living in hatch in termonfeckin in co louth. she was very brave ! nice video here !

Very Nice and it still shows the stupid rules imposed on Natives by people in Brussels, The EU should not be allowed to dictate to local Traditions.

The EU is antithetical to tradition, local or otherwise. People in this postmodern world need to realize that rejecting tradition, good traditions, is rejection of identity, purpose and reason for being.

Ireland is one of most enthusiastic enforcer of EU rules and regulation among all EU members. It has something to do with post colonial mentality, and need for an overseer

@@lluiscornet9020 Nemo has a fairly good app. When I initially downloaded Memrise, Irish was not an option but somehow it showed up when I tried once again to find it. it is linked to Duolingo but has many different native speakers saying the words. Also, I found an actual live class by going to www.daltaí.com.( only one teacher from Spain, but apparently does Skype) I wish I had given as much effort to learning Spanish as I have lately with learning Irish. I kept wanting to give up, too but now I am in it too much.
