The Traditional Kava Ceremony continues to permeate Tongan society both in Tonga and overseas. Stregnthening cultural values and principles, while solidifying traditional ideals of duty and reciprocity. It reaffirms societal structures, and entrenching the practice of pukepuke fonua, or tightly holding on to the land. A Tongan cultural ideal to maintain, preserve, and live traditional Tongan culture.
At the "Head of the Circle" is the highest ranking of the ring. Beside him are his senior "Matapule" or his talking Chiefs. Following them around the rims of the circle are his close warriors. At the other end of the circle is the Tou'a and the kava cup servers. The arrangement of the kava circle is the physical manifestation of the fonua, the land and people, in communion with their leader, where all members of society are represented.

This is such a beautiful ceremony! Even though I’m not Tongan I do have Pacific Islander blood flowing through my veins. My father is black and my mother is Chamoru (Guamanian) and Filipino. All of the islands of Pacific are separated by the largest body of water in the entire world which makes us all different and beautiful in our own unique way, having said that we are all connected by the Pacific Ocean beating through all of our hearts! Shout out to my Tongan cousins and the rest of my Pacific Islander cousins out there!!!! ❤👊🏻👊🏼👊🏽👊🏾👊🏿❤

Are the sticks sugar cane? Why did they distribute them and then cans of beef, and then take them back? How often is this ceremony done? Does it commemorate or mark a special occasion? Thanks in advance for any answers.
