I didn't even know you can do these with water-based markers. I started coloring patterns with these markers (like those adult coloring books) and now I found new ways to use them. Thank you!

You are quite welcome. So glad my video helped you out! :D
Nice straight forward tutorial, my favorite was using water to blend the colors, it’s just a personal preference but valued the other techniques as well. I’m a beginner and have more success using a marker in lieu of a paint brush even though that’s a more economical way to go. I look forward to more no nonsense informative videos, keep up the good work!

Awesome video. Thanks for the tips. I'll have to find that blender kit. Question: have you ever used a colorless blender pencil with the markers to blend?
@EStampleyArt
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kiana! Glad the video was helpful. Below is a link to the kit on Amazon but most art stores, if they carry Tombow markers should have the blending kit as well. www.amazon.com/Tombow-56180-Blending-Palette-Colorless/dp/B00FOY2UAA/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2NG0ELK2YBO78&keywords=tombow+blender&qid=1640625423&sprefix=tombow+blender%2Caps%2C94&sr=8-4 Good question. I tested this with two different colorless blender pencils. And since these are water-based markers, trying to blend them with a colorless blender, which is dry media, doesn't really work very well.

This is very helpful, being watercolor markers they will always be streaky,but I wanted to ask you what paper did you use here? Watercolor paper? What kind,or what do you recommend? Thank you
@EStampleyArt

Hello JudithF! I used a Cason's Mixed Media sketchbook which works pretty well with just a little bit of water. But you should definitely be able to use watercolor paper as well.
Is there a specific type of paper I should be using for these techniques? When I try the direct to paper blending technique in my fine grain sketchbook, it starts scratching off some of the paper and can even tear a hole if I do it too much.
@EStampleyArt

Hello @SleepTalkRest ! It could be that your paper is too thin. I was using a mixed media sketchbook in the demo which usually has a thicker paper than just a standard sketchbook.
Good Video

I'm assuming instead of the blending palette you could use laminated paper too

Hey Ly - I assume you could. Also I believe a glass or porcelain dish should work too.
Do you know if it works with any type of water-based markers? I have some and have never gotten around to using them because they're streaky af

I have subscribed to both ArtSnacks and Sketchbox in the past and both are very good. ArtSnacks has a basic box that is a bit more affordable for most and it is probably my favorite. I hope this helps you. :)
Wow, I should try water based markers again before I start swimming in alcohol!!!
@EStampleyArt
2 жыл бұрын
Nothing against alcohol-based markers (I have those as well) but I really like the versatility of water-based ones. :)
The direct to paper blending is not working for me... is the type of paper very important for this blending technique? I'm not sure why else my blending pen would not be blending the colours....
@EStampleyArt
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lee-nna Tero - It could be the type of paper you are using. In this demonstration I was using a Canson mixed-media sketchbook with 98lb paper. Paper is important with the direct to paper blending and with marker work in general. Some papers tend to bleed more than others. I hope this was helpful.
i was doing the whole process with Ohuhu dual brush pens

I think Ohuhus are alcohol-based so some of the techinques in this video probably won't work for you-especially the ones where you use water.

Some sets don't come with a colorless blender, but you can get one separately. However, you can still use techniques #3-the two-toned method and #4-blending with water to help blend your colors together.
Me gud at art
What paper are you using?

Using Canson XL Mix Media Pad 9x12, 98lb/160gsm. It's a great mixed media paper that I use with these markers and as well as other materials.

people keep saying they all come with a colorless blender. Mine did not.

Hey there! I know some of the new color sets don't come with one. So you may have gotten one of those. However, you can get the colorless blender just by itself if needed.
The final example of blending with water and paintbrush is the only one that looks good….the others look like markers were used and you can see the lines of each stroke. I do not understand why people like markers…I keep looking for a reason to invest. If you are going to blend with water and use a paintbrush and cup of water, why not just use watercolor paint? why spend so much money on markers?? . Water color paint is available cheap to expensive. Help me understand.

Hey JustStartingOver! I can't speak for everyone but I know some people either don't like or are intimidated by watercolors. I definitely was scared of watercolors until making myself try them. I have tried different varieties and am still trying to understand the best way to use them. As far as using markers, everyone can use them and they are easily accessible for children to adults and you get a fun colorful result without having to have the other tools you may need for any kind painting, including watercolor. However, I do understand not liking the "streaking" look that you can get with markers but sometimes if blended correctly the streaks can mostly disappear. I hope this was helpful. 😀
