Blender Secrets - 5 minutes of N-Gons to Quads tips
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
N-gons are sometimes created as part of the modeling process. Although they are fine in flat surface that are not meant to be deformed, quad topology is usually preferred in all other cases. In this video we look at several methods for turning N-gons (and triangles) into Quads.

Thanks for all the kind words! :)
I always bring out my knife whenever I see N-gons on my models and this is a very useful tip to add in your workflow
Great channel for people with ADHD that can't sit though a 30 minute lecture filled with trivial technicalities
I can't remember when I have learned this much from a tutorial. Great job man!
You are a 3D genie, thank you so much for the great tips!
Amazing tutorial. Clear and concise and straight to the point. Really appreciate it.
That was informative as well as relaxing to watch.
i learn more in this 5 min vids from you, than i can in tutorials of 10 hours! thank you so much!
Love it! What a lesson!
I wish to have superpower to remember all Your tips

I think a good way to do this, is that when you see a tip that you like or you want to learn, you should open up a blender project or a new blender project, and literally actually put the tip into some type of use. this begins the process of training your muscle memory. that way in the future if you ever need it for an actual purpose, you'll have already done it in the past and you'll be more likely to remember it. I don't know if I've actually tried this, but logically it makes sense

Yes, I usually have to do something about 4 or 5 times to really learn it / remember it.
Taking away several insanely useful tips from this one. Thanks so much.
Great tipps in the video! For the first case (The leaf) one can also use the "Boundary Aligned Remesh" Addon (free), which nicely remeshes such a shape to tris. I can also much recommend the "leafig" addon (payed) for skipping the "i traced a leaf" part.
Very nice work as always Jan!
Such a Lifesaver
Thank you! I was able to redo something that's been bugging me all weekend. SO HAPPY to have a clean mesh now! Instant subscribe.
I know what to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Blender secrets channel 💕💕💕
Ahh, just what I wanted to know! Auto-merging and ctrl x to dissolve vertices! I got your book not too long ago, I keep a shortcut of it on my desktop. Sooo great! ^^
I purchased your amazing Blender secrets book two days ago and searched for ngons with no result. I then found this tutorial and found all my questions answered. This is a fantastic tutorial that reflects the excellence of your book. I then searched your book again for N-gons and Bingo all the N-gon tutorials turned up. Thank you for this video and thank you for producing your amazing book at a very reasonable price.
Thanks man this is one of the most helpful channel that has the shortest video
I can not tell you how much you helped me!!!!!!!!
This is my favorite blender channel.
Wanted to follow up with another comment on your video. Finally got a chance to implement the first minute and 10 seconds of your demonstration and its like magic. So simple and just easily solves every little problem I was having with adding higher geometry to a specific face so I can get high quality results of the displacement map. So refreshing.

BRILLIANT TIP !!!
Wow this is so helpful! Thanks!!
Good stuff, man. Thanks!
Why can I like it only once? Some serious great tips here! Thank you!
Great modelling lessons!
Extremely useful video. Liked and faved.
It is 5:59 in the morning and I am just noticed this in my feed I'm early
This is super helpful!!
Dude! Your timing couldn't be better! I've been trying to figure out this exact problem a few days ago. Basically I have a relatively low poly model and a displacement map. I created the map to only affect a small area of the model, basically an ngon like your leaf. I've been struggling with how to both fill it with a grid and change the density. Thanks!
Thank you for the info, I really appreciate your insight. I will get your book at the end of April. :)
Thank you so much!!!!!
Underrated channel, just got a new sub
wow, this tip is awesome!!!!!!!!
very useful video ! Thx

Fantastic...I have looking for ways to do this on a large project! I had uploaded many files to [redacted file hosting site], but lost all my local copies due to a brain-fart. When I download my files from [redacted file hosting site] to recover my work, I found that all of the objects had been triangulated! All my beautiful edge-loops were gone...lost in a sea of messy triangles. I was about to re-create many pieces when I saw this article...can't wait to try it!
This is very useful, I didn't know knife project was a thing.
Please make guide for beginner...i know its to ask but if possible, your methods are fascinating

nice
Maybe you know how can I make retopology faster with hard surface models. I transfer them from CAD program to Blender, and make them as low poly as i can, but with all details. The problem is that there are a lot of non connected polygons, and such retopology by hand is quite time consuming, even if I use moi3d with smart converting alghoritm. I use a lot of tricks from your book, but maybe there are some tricks or nice addons. Would love to hear some advice.
Me vas a hacer llorar, he buscado esto desde hace 2 años.
I’m doing product design and I have a 3d non manifold object with terrible topology, can I retopologize(is that a word) by using the method you showed on the leaf?
I was looking for something like this for a couple day!! Thank you!!
This guy must be The master of Blender
Great info as usual and finally prompted me to buy your digital book. In newer Blender (3.3.0 LTS) there seems to be a bug with the first tip cutting faces with knife project due to selecting the two objects in viewport then switching to edit mode. When attempting to perform the knife project you receive error: "No other selected objects have wire or boundary edges to use for projection" As workaround: * In object mode of the 3D viewport select the leaf object. * Switch to Edit mode. * In the Outliner Ctrl-select click your cutting plane. You should see your leaf and cutting plane selected in the Outliner. * Running the Knife project should now work.

Hi Foobar, thanks for getting the book. When you say there's a bug with the first tip, which first tip are you referring to? Can you point me to the specific page you mean? The "workaround" you describe is the correct method for Knife cutting since Blender 3.0. See this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pKJ43NyBcbqreLQ.html

@@BlenderSecrets I meant the first tip in this video where you cut the leaf with the plane grid using knife project. The bug is not yours but, Blender bug. Bug seems to be with the selection of the two objects are not maintained when you switch to edit mode. Hope that clears it up? *EDIT* Or I should have just watched the video you linked..... 😊
option simple in subdivision best to do edge crease
How would you do this with an .SVG imported shape? From Tris to Quads?
Do you have any videos about fixing "mesh is non-manifold" issues? Sometimes I can't figure out why or exactly where my mesh is broken at. Loving these longer related-topic collection videos.

1) Make sure it's a closed surface without any gaps 2)I usually use remesh modifier and set to voxel. 3) Decimate it to bring down the mesh density. Hope it helps :)
Is this fantastic, thanks man for this. Is this very very important technic for transform after knife aplication. Thank very much
If we buy the book do we also get updates on future versions/updates on the book for a while? LIke, 1 year of updates or something like that?

Yes, free updates forever when you buy the book.
can this secret also be replaced as a retopo, is that possible?
AWSOME °_°
The first method sounds quite powerful, although the second seems to require less clean up
Je bent een legende, blij dat ik dit nu gevonden heb. Kort krachtig én to the point :)
How would I do this with an imported SVG file
do I CAN APPLY THIS TECHNIC TO THE SVG FILE IMPORTED FROM ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR. I TRIED TO DO IT, I CAN'T MAKE IT
👍👍👍
👍👍
How did you trace the leaf so precisely? I was trying to do something similar and couldn't find anything very helpful googling it.
@BlenderSecrets
2 жыл бұрын
Just extrude a vertex by selecting it and pressing E, then you can just move it and extrude again, and again... and again... if you zoom in, you can be more precise.

@@BlenderSecrets thank you! I wish blender just had a pen tool that you could add edges/vertices with as you draw. Maybe there's an addon somewhere 🤔
ok thing to say ----------DAYUM BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Je préfères JV legends plus "factuel" que "perso", mais le coté "personelle" c'est bon pour une petite intro👌🏿
Ntikiant6! Are quads better than triangles?
Make a video on texturing with texturingxyz images
Felt like an idiot because I couldn't get this simple tool to work. @45 seconds "delete only faces" was the part I was missing.
HOLY SHIT YOU CAN DO THAT??
I just watch everything related to blender. Regardless of I understand it or not.
N-gone
Small brain: shrink-wrap modifier Galaxy brain: apply cloth physics simulation and simulate scissors trimming the edges
I know this sound stupid... But why? Why triangle to quads? Does it mess with the object?
fantastic
I successfully converted all the n-gons to quads but the topology still looks like garbage (but ig that’s to be expected when I try to use these tricks on a >20 sided weirdogon)
Unreal wants triangles now, i think.
More like soy-gons and qhads. Am I right?
