Hey guys, since everyone is asking about the ending, here's the explanation: As you know, i always add a song that starts with my last snare note, however, this one had a huge copyright claim and youtube wanted to block the video on half the world (Warner doesn't forgive) So i had to replace the song with a copyright free one AFTER posting the video to not waste the views it already had. I'm so sorry but this is the best i could do since im out touring currently and i didn't have time to manage this issue properly. My sincere apologies for the wacky result, hope you enjoyed it as much as you could!

This is a super small detail but I fucking love it. At 2:18 you switch the kick drum pattern to the way that Thomas did it on the live version as opposed to sticking with the album version where he just plays the same thing again. Those extra little kicks in the middle make all the difference in terms of difficulty and heaviness. Absolutely fantastic attention to detail.

Yep just watched this for the first time and was like wut?! He's got his heel down on the right side pedal - which I imagine is already a lot harder for a song like this to get the power needed; my former teacher could get a lot of power with his heel down strokes but I can only use it for softer playing. And then it looks like he's filling in the faster notes of the herta with the left. Can't tell if he's actually starting the hertas with his left foot? If so that would be even more difficult! I can only play Bleed style hertas on the bass drum with single strokes, like I would if playing it with my hands. It feels more natural for me to just speed up a heel up R - L single stroke on my feet for the faster notes of the herta rather than do some more complex techniques like heel-toe or patterns such as using double strokes. Although just 'brute forcing' it like that I can't get that much speed or endurance out of it, and it falls apart if I try even a simple riding pattern over the top with my hands. So it's pretty clear how physically demanding Bleed is to play on the drums, yet El Estepario does it with incredible accuracy and power. It's amazing to see how he keeps improving his ability and especially impressive when he's well known for using cool tricks/techniques to get a double pedal sound out of a single pedal, yet absolutely crushes one of the most difficult double pedal songs there is.

Apart from your insane skills, you gotta admit that Haake's deliberate clean and 'simple' handwork on Bleed is part of the heaviness and brilliance. You can hear this now, when you add ghost notes and extra fills, it becomes more and more a boring heavy metal song. I think drummers like Haake and Elliot Hoffman etc, are so great because they know exactly what is needed to create something new. It sounds like they are not bothered by ego... Sure it sounds like a luke-warm idea and maybe isn't super exciting.. but it's sexy to drummers because THEY know how tough it is to play all the way through this song. It's hard to play a 4/4 2+4 pattern with that herta pattern just straight through no tricks no meter change no changes in the groove... No shifting of which partial the herta falls on.. Hertas on the bass over even a simple eighth note groove is not exactly elementary. It takes a lot of fucking practice... And if you didn't take the time to hammer out your rhythm and sticking and rudiment fundamentals and in the 'right' way (can mean lots of things).... You will basically have to learn how to play drums again from the ground up. Ask Thomas Haake (y'know the guy)... And he will basically say the same thing.. This song gets the props it deserves from the drum community.

This is SO next level. Like others have said, it's technically fantastic AND has the groove. For new drummers - notice how still EES's torso is while playing - balanced and still. Also notice he's not beating the drums like they owe him money. Limited arm movement, and mostly wrists/fingers. Spotless technique.

I've never seen anyone play this leading left foot. I don't know if that's the way you normally do your doublebass, but it's very impressive! EDIT: I might have been wrong, actually. I think the bouncing motion of the left foot threw me off. Watching his Instagram video playing on the TV (mental), I think this is actually leading right foot. But then in the later section, when the hertas are broken up slightly it looks like left foot lead again. I'm so confused!

  • @jsraudio

he's right food leading, he's just playing flat footed with his right foot, the fact that the left foot is playing heel up could fool you when he lifts his foot on the 1 to prepare for the second stroke, but he's definitely leading right foot

@@JeanDenisCote I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me at first as well haha, this absolutely mad bastard is left-foot leading it XD In terms of the different foot positions, it'll be a balance/ergonomics/technique thing. If you watch a foot cam of Haake playing the song, you'll notice his right ankle and leg are angled higher than the left to accomodate the double whereas the left is lower and using a fuller leg motion to fill the notes inbetween. This dude probably thought to push it a little more extreme on the off foot with a shin workout and keep the motion all heel down instead, again, mad bastard :P

Honestly this isnt even one on meshuggahs top 5 hardest to play on drums imo. Ive been diving deep into them for the last year and a half. After learning some of the songs on drums including this one i can honestly tell you that the only 2 things that make this song a pain in the ass. #1 the rhythms in the middle section and solo, #2 the speed. It took me 3months to finally play this song through without my legs getting tired or too tense. I think there are a few tracks off of chaosphere that top this song. Even the song future breed machine is harder than this one in my opinion.
