I have a copy of a recording of Blaze in someone's living room. On it, Blaze says he was standing at a bus stop in Austin, late 70's, beer in one hand, guitar in the other and a bus transfer pass in his teeth. A car pulls up to the traffic light, the driver takes a look at him and locks her doors (power door locks). The song came to him and took as long to write as it did to sing it.

Sad that a super songwriter like BLAZE went so fast as a comet . I listen to his voice/music and realized about four or five loops (of the song) it's been that long but brings peace and inner calm... What a writer/singer...! Reminds me of JORGE CAFRUNE(Argentina) killed by the military, or FELA KUTI due from AIDS. GREAT artists, loved by MANY and sad to now not here anymore. 😢.

RIP, Blaze. Like O. Henry you were a keen, ruthlessly funny and delicate observer of the human condition whose true genius wasn't fully appreciated until long after you'd passed. It's sad people like Townes Van Zant, Guy Clark, Lucinda Williams, et al get all the run and you were better by accident than any of them were on purpose. When the likes of Merle Haggard, John Prine, Willie Nelson and Joe Nichols are covering your songs 20 years after your death you're in Hank, Sr. territory.

proserpine Townes Van Zant was a privileged, freshwater, snotty rich kid who had to drink himself into the human condition in which Blaze Foley actually existed. TVZ had to work himself down. Blaze was already there. I hung out with them both...alot. Townes was an asshole, mean drunk and while talented was nowhere near the pure brilliance of BF. I've heard Blaze leave stuff on people's answering machines better than many things TVZ wrote. TVZ knew what he was talking about. BF WAS what he was talking about.

It's a MUST! Just for the meter alone ("Take out'cher molars with needle-nose pliars", and the internal rhyme of "get me some earthworms and smear 'em on you" Effing brilliant.

@mopacmedia Thanks for telling us this. when I first listened to this song, I just knew Blaze was standing on a corner somewhere and an old lady pulled up, took one look at him and locked her door. I've had it happen to me. Thanks! Hey, I'd love to hear that recording!
