I say this alot about alot of songs. But I find myself coming back to this and thinking "this is probably one of the best songs anyone's ever written." It's so touchingly human. There's so much emotion in this simple little ditty.

I used to listen to this song all the time when I was in my addiction to me personally, it was a song of hope and redemption. I moved out to the Texas Hill Country almost two years ago. I didn't know Blaze had such a huge following here. 16 days, and I'll be 2 years clean and sober. This song has helped me so much along the way. Never give up hope!

1000th comment. Blaze Foley is the most under appreciated, under rated and downright best folk artist of the 70’s - late 80’s!! Wish I was old enough to have met him.

When I heard John Prine singing Clay Pigeons, I saw that Blaze Foley was the songwriter. This song strikes a chord with me. After a career in the Army and the end of a 28 year marriage, i walked away from it all. I left Texas and headed to the West Coast. Basically, I went for two years and rarely drew a sober breath from Seattle, San Francisco, Albuquerque and places in between. When the song lyrics say - I'm tired of running 'round Lookin' for answers to questions that I already know I could build me a castle with memories Just to have somewhere to go. I know the heartfelt message that the song conveys. I absolutely love this song.

Never made it as far as the west coast, after going bust in Albuquerque having pulled up stakes in the Carolinas, I stood on the side of interstate 40 flipping a coin; east or west, with as much a chance of making it anywhere. Ended up staying in Oklahoma for a couple of years, working the oilfields.

I thought Prine originally wrote it, that's how closely him and Foley are aligned lyrically. I think people who travel have a better perspective about life than people who don't. There is just so much to see and experience.

In fact John Prine talks about meeting Blaze Foley once, I believe it was in New York City, however he didn’t remember the meeting but people told him it had happened. I listen to tons of music but only found Blaze out with Clay Pigeons a few weeks ago. First time I heard it I was in tears. When I was 18 I was diagnosed with MS which robbed me of my ability to play. At the time I had a job repairing stringed instruments, had a metal band on the up n up, and all of a sudden I woke up one day with a complete paralysis of my left side (picking hand), this led me down a decade of drug and alcohol abuse. Never would pick my guitar up because I wasn’t ready to confront what I had lost. Ten years later and I “started playing again”. In these ten years I’ve switched from city to city trying to find happiness. But in the end, I just want to play music with my pals. That’s all.

As part of the Austin songwriter community back in the 80’s, I knew Blaze fairly well. There were two schools of thought about him back then. Batshit crazy or misunderstood genius. I came in on the “little of both”side. I still think of him on occasion. Usually, when I see a roll of duct tape. Blaze could make quite a fashion statement with duct tape. RIP brother.

@Lyler Taley good point my friend. I fought the honky Tonk wars for many years. Don’t regret a minute of it. At 79 years old now that period holds my fondest memories. If you are a songwriter keep at it for the good of your own soul. Making it is not about money.

If it wasn’t for listening to TVZ Pancho and Lefty endlessly, I may have never been listening to this song endlessly. I played it for my 8yo son, and asked him what he thought the man singing it was feeling. He said, “It sounds like he’s really lonely. Like he needs a new beginning.” That resonates, and probably why I relate to this song so well. Why it spoke to me the second I heard it.

I heard this tune for the first time a few months ago. It's so simple and yet I feel every word in my soul. A man down and out trying to find a way to turn it around and not giving up. Amazing writing it brings me back to the place of having a broken heart and not knowing what to do, but doing it anyway. Perfection.

when I moved to Austin, Tx in 1992 at 22 years old, I moved into a tiny efficiency, and during my moving in, I found a Blaze Foley tape [live recording], and decided to give it a listen. I fell in love with how raw it was, and so very tactile. Although I am 53 now, and can't remember where that cassette tape is, I still sing many of the songs in my head, to this day, especially 'Officer Norris" . Rip Blaze.
