The choice to put this song to play in the very first second of the movie was excellent, because of that we could feel melancholic. The shot of the flowers and the characters resting introduces us to something depressive and yet so beautiful.

This music reminds you of their friendship throughout the film, it plays when they're first together at the beginning and then when they're together for the last time. It then plays when Schofield is searching for Blake's brother, once again reminding us of their friendship and making us remember Blake cause they just love making us sad. And the blossoms too, Schofield was losing hope and then saw the blossoms in the river and it made him push forward for Blake, remembering his stories. Because he had 2 missions to complete; save 1600 lives and fulfill his promise to Blake. The whole film is so sad and reminds you of the many young men with potential just like Blake who died. All of their funny stories never to be told again. 10/10 amazing film, really gets you thinking.

The entire score of this film is ethereal, otherworldly, much like the landscape of the war itself. As WWI soldier and poet Wilfred Owen put it: "Death becomes absurd and life even more absurd," and Thomas Newman's score really reinforces that idea. The trials and tribulations Blake and Schofield go through on their way to deliver a message are extraordinary to civilians, but as soldiers, it's just another day at war. Bravo, Mr. Newman. This is, quite honestly, your best work to date. 👏

So, this is my take on it. This is the music that plays during the opening scene, it appears peacefully, serene, as the camera shows us the two main protagonists, Blake and Schofield. They are seen resting, the General comes along and kicks Blake into action, Blake gives Schofield a hand. Schofield has his eyes closed, reluctant to get up. They are seen walking towards the trenches, Blake gets out a picture of his family, and seems to show Schofield, he isn’t pleased/happy to see a happy family of what his friend once had, perhaps suggesting he never had a good relationship with his own family, or that he doesn’t want to see a family because he is 50% certain he will return back to his family. By this point, the camera is behind them, suggesting you as a viewer are now also a “prisoner of war” experiencing what these privates had to go through. They are given a task to give Blake’s brother, in the 2nd commandment that they are to call off an attack, this is when Blake storms off, as Schofield attempts to help him talk it through.

Don't get me wrong - I loved Chernobyl and its OST, I have nothing against her, honeslty I even like her... but I'm afraid that at this time in Hollywood she's gonna win just because she's a woman. There's a lot of talking about how there's not a lot of women in direction and composition, so it seems very plausible, just to show "fairness". And that would be crushing, because Newman should've got an Oscar LONG time ago. Also, his score for "1917" is miles ahead. And finally, Joker's OST is filled with non-original music - most of it's great musical effect in expressing 70'/80' vibes is thru additional songs Hildur didn't have anything to do with.
