Growing up, my brother and I were never chased from school because of school fees. Right from primary till S.6, we'd always leave school when the school term has ended. Even at university, we never missed exams because our tuition was always paid to zero balance on the first day. Am very grateful to God for enabling our parents provide for us 🙏

I think we need to differentiate between privilege and parenting within your context, both personal and environmental. Our parents couldn't afford certain things, that we afford them for our children is not privilege. If you denied them you would just be mean and projecting your trauma. Growing up, technology was not as advanced, we barely believed that mobile phones were a thing. Tablets are a normal order of the day now, not a privilege.

Personally, my parents sent me to boarding school because my father hated seeing his children wake up so early and thought we could sleep more in boarding school and just wake and go to class. I am not a parent, but I grew up in Kampala. I recall meeting people at university, and they were from Kabale, Fort Portal, etc. When the semester ended and we broke off for holidays, they would have to go back to those places. I swear it didn't make sense to me cos I thought everyone had a home in Kampala, and those other districts were just villages. I was surprised that their parents were in the villages. Some of them were surprised that i wasn't going to Jinja - my village. That is when my mind opened up to some of the privilege I had growing up. My classmates in primary and high school were either from Kampala or Mukono.
