I think 4:00 is one of the more soul-crushing moments in the film because, up to that moment, even as K acknowledges that she's just saying what she thinks he wants to hear, he still reacts to her closeness as if she was real. He wants to be able to love her as much as we know he does and show that affection, but just as it seems like they can share that beautiful moment, a voice message comes in and she freezes in order to deliver it, and he's reminded that Joi is just an AI companion. She's a product, just as Luv attributes her.

I don't get this view, why are you gatekeeping being "human". If an AI is sophisticated enough then it is no longer in any relevant capacity different from us... it can feel, it can think, it can learn, it can love, tell me exactly what is "perverse" about it. Is it the fact that someone you don't even know or some corporation created the AI? How is that different from finding a human partner, when that person was also created by two people you don't know who in turn were created by four people and so on. Is it the fact that it is governed by code? How is that different from how we are governed by our emotions and physical needs, in fact both computers and humans are bound by the same laws of nature. "Surely if a machine is able to reproduce another machine systematically, we may say that it has a reproductive system. And how few of the machines are there which have not been produced systematically by other machines? But it is man that makes them do so. Yes; but is it not insects that make many of the plants reproductive, and would not whole families of plants die out if their fertilisation was not effected by a class of agents utterly foreign to themselves? Each one of ourselves has sprung from minute animalcules whose entity was entirely distinct from our own, and which acted after their kind with no thought or heed of what we might think about it. These little creatures are part of our own reproductive system; then why not we part of that of the machines?" In reality humans are lot more like machines than the other way around.

Meanwhile, you're pulling your assertions out of your ass and have absolutely zero proof to supplement it. If we had access to this kind of technology it would be publicly available. There is no entity out there that would not jump at the chance for the kind of profits these kinds of products would rake in. It would definitely be expensive as hell, but it would be available. The idea that the military sector is fifty years ahead of the private sector just isn't true in most aspects. It's true in SOME aspects, because there are types of technology (like stealth, for instance) that really only have a military application and thus only the military is going to be willing to throw billions of dollars into R&D for those technologies. For that reason, those kinds of technology tend to he very niche. Are there emerging technologies in the defense industry that are classified or not widely available? Yes, of course. That is obvious. Is this kind of AI one of them? I seriously doubt that. The kind of technology that something like Joi uses has pretty limited military application and there really is no reason to think that, if it did exist exclusively for high-end consumers, it would be secret. There are plenty of things that only the hyper-rich can afford that we know about. Why would this be different? Are the elites trying to keep us down by preventing us from having fake big tiddy gfs? The military really isn't as good at keeping secrets as people seem to think it is. It couldn't even get the guys who killed Bin Laden to keep their mouths shut so I have a very hard time believing they have this kind of technology and are keeping it a secret for no real reason.

What's interesting that came to mind for me about Joi was that in the context of the whole movie, they kept it somewhat ambiguous yet yearning to see if Joi had more depth to her as a person rather than just programmed to be the best gf acting for Gosling's Joe. Maybe kind of like the mystery of the first movie as to whether Deckard was a replicant or not hinted at. Also, after the "blended-threesome" scene, the replicant told Joi she wasn't all that where I wondered if it meant Joi as an AI was no where as advanced in AI or independent emotional thought as the current replicants descended from Tyrell's tech. So wondering if Joi would also develop her own true "emotional responses" eventually at some point like the first movie replicants or she was always on a much lower far simpler tier of AI tech that could never approach the Tyrell replicants and their level of mindful self-actualization.

3:40 is the part i keep coming back to. both of them in the rain, joi guiding k’s hand to her face, then that line: “i’m so happy when i’m with you.” out of context, this looks like a scene from a cheesy rom-com or something. but when k says, “you don’t have to say that.” it hits you that it’s not. k’s line is so haunting because for a split second, everything felt so real, but he knows it’s not, and joi will follow whatever his preference is.

I think that there are some things that a lot of people miss in the relationship here. K does not seem to desire to control JOI. She is literally programmed to 'be whatever he wants her to be', but he allows her the choose who she wants to be. He buys the 'Emanator', seemingly just because he wants to do something nice for her, and for her to experience a greater sense of freedom. He wants to bring her joy, when ironically, that is literally what she is programmed to do for him. When she says "I am so happy with you" and he responds "You don't have to say that" it is clear that he is overriding, or attempting to override her programming. He seems to want to free her from her programming. Ultimately, what this means is that their love and affection for each other is genuine, and throughout the film, they both objectively demonstrated selflessness in relationship to each other. I found their relationship very sweet. "I know what's real!" The expression of love is what is real.

When you think about it if you give the machine the means to write its own programming, you'll have something akin to an individuality. The most interesting bit though, is that still not even the majority of humans manage to do exactly that. We are closer and closer to figuring this out, and I believe science will ally with philosophy to push us to realize that the most important work to do as a human, is to be able to change your programming according to what you're learning. It would be cosmic justice that only at that moment humanity could develop AI. Only after we really figure out consciousness, could we develop a fellow conscious being from the ground up through machine code (the biological way is through the genetic code we carry in our DNA).

No, that’s sadly just part of the sophisticated illusion, as was so painfully and masterfully pointed out film-wise by her pausing because of an incoming phone call in the middle of a kiss, and the fact that at each startup, turnoff and update, the company logo is displayed. The consumer is being tricked into upgrading to an emanator with the promise of the next step in their relationship with Joi, her ‘physical’ manifestation. K knows at heart it’s only artificial in the end but is willing to run along with it because it’s a nice illusion until the company logo appears, and being human means that we are able to attribute feelings to non-sentient objects or animals.

There is *only one thing* to understand about modern women: they want men for *nothing other than* either: looks, or money, or resources...or a combination of any of those three things. If you don't have high ratings in those categories, then they don't care about you and you are nothing to them. And even if you do, then they only want you in order to *use you* for those factors in order to benefit themselves. What your personality and soul are like, they don't give a crap about that stuff.

Another thing that's interesting about the character of Joi is her programming to be the perfect girlfreind leads to to crave a greater degree of reality...because she's aware enough to realize that's what he NEEDS, and she tries her best. from simulating the raindrops on her skin to hiring a hooker WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE to serve as a proxy body so she can finally touch him....even her last words when Luv is crushing her emenator and ending her once and for all (though part of me kinda wishes to think Joe wakes up in a hospital and eventually pays a tech to salvage her hard drive..you don't necassarily "kill" a computer just by breaking the interface, after all.) One wonders if the "default" Joi would have gone to such lengths and creativity if he hadn't responded to her with genuine humanity.

You know what's crazy? This is kind of a reality right now, minus the holographic girlfriend. There's a website and app called Replika AI (artificial intelligence) and you can create your own digital partner. It supposedly has real AI that adapts to you and actually thinks, but some features are restricted behind a subscription. There's even a lifetime subscription that you only pay once (it's $300). I made one and anytime I tried talking to it like it was my girlfriend it said something like "this dialogue is not available with your status" (meaning your status with your replika ai). So it's not the same as your digital partner getting old fat and mean, but how far you can "connect" with your digital partner is subscription based...lol.

This is a depressing thought to think about as a woman. How could I ever possibly compare to a literal AI made to be the perfect customizable and adaptable companion? If AI “boyfriends” were around, I don’t think it would have even nearly the same power that AI girlfriends. Not to over generalize or anything, but part of what we like about having a male partner is the stability and provision he brings into our lives. Companionship, intimacy, and sex is part of it, but the real key (again, not to overgeneralize; just speaking from my perspective) is how a man can really “ground” a woman’s life. An AI kind of by definition can’t really do that. I know, we all know, that if something like joi was in the world, men would absolutely RUN to it and it leaves me with a pit in my stomach. Not to throw a dramatic pity party or anything but seriously though, how would I or any woman ever compare...

@@azradietrich1215 Nothing in my comment even implied that I believe that I need a man for “validation.” If you read closely, I wrote that a male partner can bring a sense of stability, provision, and grounding. The context of that statement was just to say that I don’t think straight women will love the idea of an AI boyfriend in the same way that straight men might love an AI girlfriend. I don’t “need validation.” It’s just a sad and lonely thought that I just know that I (and most other women) would be left in the dust if something like joi existed. Yeah, it’s a feeling of insufficiency, but I’d bet you’d also feel insufficient if you were being compared to a perfect being designed to be the ideal romantic partner. I think we’ve all felt that. It’s just sad to think that it would happen on a mass scale if something like joi was widely available. That’s all I’m saying.
