The presentator tells he is a big fan of bladerunner cause of the AI. But really there is no AI involved in bladerunner. Replicants inspire him to become expert in AI? Curious, replicants are biological and not hardware. I suppose he doesn't have even seen the movie or he is just stupid. Another piece of truthtelling and honnesty in the media or corporate show... I find bladerunner 2049 so slow, contemplative and boring and he tells really nothing. I think I will watch it a second time but just to find out the flaws I have missed. This is quite the only thing to do as never intertained me a second. I had no emotion viewing this movie, it's deception cause bladerunner was one my prefered reference in sf. Bladerunbner 2049 is for me a failure but everybody seems to qualifie it of high art when only the photography is interesting. More and more I have the feeling to be from another planet. And he is wobbly. If you look closely the plot is completely impossible. K is normally a replicant, but he finds out he is human, so how on earth can he have been integrated in a replicant program for the police if he is human living from 0 to 32, while replicants born with allready 20 or 22. And how can he has not a remember of all is life ? So cool Deckard was a human and suddenly he beomes a replicant, and K from replicant become human, so subtile, so original, so meaningfull, so convenient... But dumb, incoherent, impossible and silly from an authist scenarist that offer nothing to be fond of. But that not the only silly point, K goes after a replicant and among a million of target, he finds by miracle a clue number on a root melted in earth and... Oh boy thats all nonsenses and bullshits. The female IA is just an independant ark not really funny cause really she is at light years of what would be the purpose of an AI in the future. The IA behaviour is just emotional and idiotic for a machine. It's just a subject for a story that intend to sell AI to the public. The hollogram is so unrealistic, how do you create an hologram from an artefac the size of a phone from a distant of 10 meters or more with the device on your pocket ?. They show the skin of the hollogram catch the raindrop, stupid because on purpose beside that holograms can't catch rain. Holograms are light and not flesh. I haven't understanded what was the intention on this point. That is so evident that wet skin of an hologram can't be shown in a reallist point of view.

General audiences said the same thing about Blade Runner in 1982.

It hurts that Blade Runner 2049 wasn't financially successful. It is easily my favorite sci-fi film of all time, only standing next to the anime film Ghost in the Shell. I hope more directors take chances like Denis did and make more films like this.

I think he's our "new Ridley Scott in his prime". Let's be honest, Scott's recent movies are quite bad except for The Martian. But in his younger years he put out quite a few movies that have legendary status nowadays. And I see Villeneuve is achieving the same thing right now. Arrival is one of my all time favourites. Sci-fi that makes you think and doesn't shove action scenes at you combined with the ultimate question "would you change anything if you knew what would happen" wrapped up in a romance story? It's a miracle such thing got greenlighted in today's Hollywood. And his attitude towards the scifi genre itself - asking questions that mirror our reality but not necessarily answering them. I love it, it's exactly what I've always loved in scifi books and I'm really happy there's a super talented director that sees it the same way. I'm sick of all these movies holding our hands and explaining everything thrice so that even the dumbest guy in the audience would understand it. I love it when film challenges me and makes me think. Can't wait to see 2049 this weekend.

Denis is proof that you can be a genius while being grounded, articulate and kind. I love listening to his interviews.

Back less than 2 hours from a viewing. IMO 2049 is one of those very rare examples of a sequel that succeeds on its own while simultaneously enhancing and expanding on what made the original so great. For me 2049 was a more enjoyable viewing experience hitting an impressive balance between visceral awe and intellectual/philosophical stimulation and engagement. That said, none of that would be possible without the original. Villeneuve is an artist to be treasured and given our full support. In an age of decline in the general quality of filmmaking, as fans of great cinema he is the answer to our prayers. Bravo, Denis!

The interviewer is literally going to be a name that will be remembered in 100 years / 200 years when AI is prevalent, if he's a cunt, he's a historical figure level kinda cunt, like Issac Newton. (Except of course, Hassabis seems approachable and friendly, unlikely my historic example)

Blade Runner 2049 was one of the best movies Denis has ever made PERIOD... Better hope that Deakins gets his Oscar, otherwise we riot!

Imagine if Denis brings Deakins and makes Dune. Have you read the book?. Doesen't matter really, if they collaborate on dune, and Denis gets full artistic freedom. Oh my friggin god. You have no idea what's coming. Dune is so majestic, it has so monumental themes and scenery, just thinking about Deakins running around in a desert setting up shots makes me fuzzy inside. I just imagine the sandworms, huge, coming up from beneath the sand, the CGI will look spectacular, and the sound effects will make your heart stop, and the images will be so beautiful your eyes will start to clog. Denis needs to make Dune, before someone else does it and ruins it. Denis is the right guy, he will make it right, and it will be one of the best movies ever made. I just know it.

When I saw 2049 and realized the was NOT going to answer if Deckard was or was not human, I knew the film had solidified itself as a worthy peer to the original. The scene where he's crying and says 'I know what's real' was such flawless sci-fi.

It did not shame the first one, and even though the first will forever be my absolute number 1 movie ever, yours is now a kickass number 2. Awesome, and once again, thank you for this masterpiece.

I agree. The original had something special, but it wasn't perfect. It will always be remembered as a classic, especially for it's aesthetic. But 2049 felt much more... impactful.

The music is worse, the plot is full of modern follies, like twists and mindfucks galore for the sake of it, and the camera running amock “because you can”, the effects and world feeling sterile, construed and lifeless? Well, then it is impactful in that sense.

​@@Frisenette You could easily come up with a list of criticism like that for the original. It's always dark and cloudy and moody, super unsubtle use of atmosphere. Deckard basically rapes Rachel, that's somehow meant to establish a romantic rapport between the two characters? And to say “it's just because she's new to all this love stuff, she's a robot who's not used to being affected by these emotions.” That doesn't make it better, it just means he's taking advantage of her even more. Pris and Roy are always toying with Deckard instead of just finishing him off, even when he has a gun and will be able to kill them. For Roy I sort of get because it's almost like he wanted to die (or he desperately wanted to show he had humanity by sparing Deckard). But with Pris it's just dumb, she could have snapped his neck a few times, but she lets him get away because the plot demands it. Instead of running away and actually trying to free themselves, it seems the replicants sort of bum around town and wait for the blade runners to find them and finish them all off. But they bother to go kill Tyrell for... revenge? I love the original, but it's not some pristine example of idealized movie-making. It's got plot-holes just like any other movie. And really, if it wasn't for the amazing esthetic of the original movie, people would have most likely forgotten Blade Runner as just another cheezy 80s sci-fi movie. Taste is subjective, but I like the new one for it's slow pace, it's minimalist scenes, the way it takes it's time to have a moment happen.

You are basically just describing the movie in unsympathetic terms. The recent, monomaniacal fixation on continuity errors, plotholes and political correctness in movies, reveals a poor understanding of what constitutes a good movie. No movie is perfect, but a good one will give you the impression it is. As long as you are captivated by the characters and atmosphere, you will not begin to second-guess. The characters act like they do, because they are in an extremely complex and soul wrenching predicament. Real people act like that. Nothing "cheesy" about Bladerunner (what is that word even, if not a poor, moronic, diluted, ill spirited 90's replacement for camp and kitsch?). It's a pastiche and an homage to film noire and french science fiction comics.

Blade Runner is so forward thinking and cinematically profound that people will be talking about it for decades to come.

This man right there is one of the best working directors. All his movies so far are absolutely masterpieces.

Outstanding. Villeneuve is becoming one of my favorite directors.

Same. My favorites working in the business today is Villeneuve, Tarantino, Scorsese, Nolan, Coen brothers, Cameron and P.T.Anderson. They constantly deliver quality.

The only good contemporary sci fi director. Not just good. Amazing. And he's so humble. To me blade runner 2049 is as good as the first one. Both are freaking amazing. Can't wait for dune and more movies

Polytechnique is the only movie I haven't seen from him. He alongside with Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Cohen brothers, and David Lynch is the living spirit of cinema.

Objectively speaking all of his films were a financial success and had a relatively low budget. Sure with the exception 2049 bombed, but for your information it became the 3rd highest selling contender in DVD sales of 2017? Just like it's predecessor it earned sweet redemption through home video sales. Obviously it doesn't matter it's clearly a cult film and I'm not going to deny that. Either people hated it or loved it. In terms of box office, sure it failed but by DVD sales it earned it's money back. So it wasn't a total financial failure. Clearly you didn't do research so next time think before you type. Oh also provide substantial facts to solidy your statements instead of entirely basing them on emotions. Just back from the opening here in Florida. I'd like to apologize to Mr. Villenueve, Mr. Scott, Mr. Deakins and everyone involved in Blade Runner 2049. I'm a life long fan of Blade Runner. I was skeptical about this new movie..... I was BLOWN AWAY. It is phenomenal. I can't begin to describe the feelings I had while watching my favorite story line in IMAX 2D... with the increadible chest shaking sound of the soundtrack. This movie didn't feel like a sequal.. it felt like a new movie... a new way of making movies. This sets the bar high for every movie genre from this day forward.... I sat there with my friend watching the previews of CG overload movies, thinking to myself what trash and empty story lines each one had.... excited for what was to come... keeping an open mind... and trying to remember everything around me. It's been 30 years since I first watched Blade Runner (I was too young when it came out in 1982). Over the years, I've played the movie in the background in my home for music and just to listen to it. The sounds are just relaxing. This movie was a life event for me. It is my utopia of entertainment.. the best that science fiction has ever offered. And it held up every expectation that I had... you can't have everything... and I know that and I'm very happy with what was done here in Blade Runner 2049... my new favorite movie. Thank you everyone involved. I'll be watching it three more times with friends and family. I can't wait to see it over and over again.

Miguel wasn't it inevitable though. How does any one director one up the original Blade Runner. True, I saw it again tonight. The story was simple... it could have been better. But it is done. It was very impressive scenery. We won't have a vangelis soundtrack to play for the next 30 years, which is sad. The idea of the movies plot was great. It was not developed very much. But the scenery was cinematography and nit CG. It felt good. And it was a long movie! But I loved it.

Bertram You just basically put my feelings and thoughts to words. I cant remember the last time i was so emotionally involved in a film. I couldnt think of anything else the day after I was so conflicted, perplexed, amazed and intrigued by it. I was born in 1983 and for the first time I really felt if a movie was personally made for me (if that makes any sense). The message it conveys, the questions it makes you ask, the visuals, the soundtrack (God the soundtrack is just transcendent) everything is just unreal about it. The fact that I'm hungarian and that the film was shot in hungary with a ton of hungarian things in it just makes it even more personal. Absolutely in love with it, going in for seconds tomorrow.

The interviewer is amazing, the questions are so well informed, in comparison with Wired and mainstream media questions, this is gold.

29:33 is an amazing statement. Articulates a major problem in current sci fi and just shows how Villeneuve is a perfect fit for Blade Runner. Now please save Alien for us.

Just listening to this man speak is music to my ears. He is a true visionary for cinema. I will follow you anywhere Mr Villeneuve!

Denis is quite possibly one of the most talented and most passionate filmmakers working today. It’s so rare to see a director who just LOVES cinema, and it makes him such an inspiration for many other filmmakers out there, including myself.

It's not rare to see a director who loves cinema. It's the exact opposite, it's rare to see a director who doesn't love cinema. Most directors, either good, bad, or mediocre love cinema. So I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

I find it hilariously baffling how there are certain individuals such as you who can't be rational towards other people's different perspective. If anything you don't sound any different from a typical millennial sounding emotional, along with being uncontrollably contradictory when it comes to making statements. "I have better things to do in life. I can't do anything different than repeating an argumentative conversation. Thanks for giving us this movie Denis, you knocked it out of the park, surprising in all the best possible ways, an utterly beautiful and mesmerizing movie, truly a masterpiece and a sequel that does justice to the original in ways that I thought a sequel never could

To follow Blade Runner was a near impossible task. Villeneuve did an amazing job by honoring the first film while yet having his own vision. The dynamic between K and Joi is an amazing sub plot to the film that I think speaks to the male/female relationship, they way men view women.

Denis is a genius I never thought I would put somebody on Chris Nolan's level of filmmaking but he is comfortably in that league.

Denis Villeneuve is a powerhouse and is making the way to the very top of the mountain. He is only 50 years old, which is incredibly exciting. His best work should be ahead of him. Martin Scorcesse is 74 years old, for example. He is not as controversial as Darren Aronofsky and now has several successful movies under his belt (Prisoners, OMGoat!) I cannot wait for his next film. Just to merely listen to him is an honor. He is a genius.

This guy is destined to be a giant.

Respect just oozes out of DV, it's not hard to understand why he gets so much out of the people lucky enough to work with him. By far the best director working today, he's also in my top 3 GOAT.

Denis is one of the most Talented of the Modern Filmmakers Today, Arrival for Ex is a very well Directed Film, u can just Observe if the Film is well Directed if u didn't know it was Directed it will feels like watching a Story without a Camera.

I can't wait to see this film.

He is making Dune next which is almost impossible because Alejandro Jodorowsky couldn't do it, but I hope he succeeds.

He just needs to use the same core team as on blade runner 2049. Especially Deakins. Omfg, i get wet dreams thinking about sand worms and Deakins photography to a Villeneuve vision. It's going to look insanely spectacular.

First of all,after watching the documentary,we should all thank God ( or whatever your belief system ist) that,this pretentious twat Jodorowsky never made a Dune movie.People bitch about the David Lynch movie,which actually tried to be a faithfull adaptation(although it failed),imagine what would have happened if Jodorowsky would had made his abomination of a ''Dune'' movie.(quotation marks are deliberate here). His ''Dune'' movie would had nothing to do with the actual source material,except some character names and locations,it would have been another one of his artsy fartsy movies with a guy called Paul Atreides,stumbling around for 5-6 hours in the desert and doing bizarre shit,like fucking a sandworm or whatever.For crying out loud,he says in the beginning of the documentary,that he didn't even bothered reading the damn book,because it was too boring for him!! And second,remember when they announced the ''LoR'' trilogy? People said:''Oh man, even Stanley Kubrick couldn't make a proper LoR movie,how will this guy from New Zealand manage to do it?'' But Peter Jackson did,because he was foremost a fan of the source material,is a talented film maker,he put a lot of work into it and he wanted the movies to be as faithfull to the source material as possible.(yeah,he also cut out lots of stuff from the books,but that's inevidable when you adapt a book to a movie.) Denis Vileneuve on the other hand is a big fan of the Dune franchise,so he's extra motivated and has the respect for the source material ,plus he's a very talented director who has proven himself.If there was a chance to get a proper Dune movie adaptation,it's with this guy here.

It's getting good reviews but not doing well at the Box Office

We've seen Blade Runner 2049, and Denis has done a remarkable job.

He has some CV now and he hit this one out of the park. And well done, again, Hampton Fancher.

Amazing movie. Loved every second of it.

I loved 2049. It was the best big budget science fiction film of the last decade, if not longer. But if it bombs just like the original, I'm totally fine with that, because lightning already struck twice.

Outstanding interview. Having watched Blade Runner at least 50 times over the past 35 years and now 2049 five times in the theater, it's clear that Ridley Scott has developed more than a couple of cult classics - they're almost a religion. But then again, did I hear K say "God dammit!" when Ana Stelline discloses the source of his memory? Are all memories, human or synthetic, just implants? Guess we should ask Ridley. Or maybe Denis, or Hampton, or...
