For Halloween I wanted to take a look at the action-horror trilogy, made up of Blade, Blade 2, and Blade Trinity. Here's what I thought.

I am a full time video editor who has worked in the past as a director and editor on a number of small films, and have experience on films of all sizes. I would submit that the mere one season of Blade: The Series on Spike TV was actually better than Blade: Trinity. But I agree with the above comment about at least being thankful that we were introduced to Ryan Reynolds exercising his chops in an action/comedy role. Blade 1 & 2 remain among my all-time favorite Marvel movies.

Snipes wants a Blade series with the Midnight Sons, which is Blade, Doctor Strange, Moon Knight, and Ghost Rider. Ghost Rider and Moon Knight are already being talked about for stand-alone Netflix series, in the vein of Punisher and Daredevil. So that seems like it be the best way possible for Snipes to reprise his role and retcon the failed parts of the movie saga.

Blade 1 and 2 still have some of the most inventive action sequences of the CBM genre. The Blood Bath opener is a proper way to establish a character intro. No dialogue. No exposition. Pure action as narrative to show how badass the protagonist is. I know his weaponry, his skills, and his motive all within 3 to 4 minutes of a badass action scene.

Blade's 2 intro isn't too shabby neither. And the wrestling style final fight is great. Great camera work, comic book style and yet gritty and violent too. The opponents hurt each other, you know they wanna kill each other. It should be 'action fight scene 101', but it hasn't been so in many big budget movies : 2 guys fight each other, one of them is gonna be dead at the end of the scene. The movie and actors convey that aspect.

I can see it. Set it in the 1970s when tech was rather low. No cell phones with cameras, a dark seedy underworld of the UK or New York. (think gothic horror nor Nior). Dont let Blade have his sword yet, but start him off with daggers (Silver coated iron rather than wood daggers as in the comics) Think of it as Shaft/Blackula vs Hammer Dracula.

According to none other then Stan Lee,the success of the first Blade movie, paved the way for the whole big budget Superhero/Comic Movies.Big Hollywood studios were hesitating in investing big money,in Comicbook movies, after the desaster that was ''Batman & Robin'' and the other failed superhero movies,in the 90's,like ''Spawn'' for example. But when the studios saw, that a comicbook movie, feat. a less known character and also with a R-Rating,can bring big bucks, they decided to invest in movies with more known characters. That's how the first X-Men was greenlighted and after the success of that movie, the superhero movie-train started rollin'. What is remarkable,is the fact that Blade was Rated-R and featured a black hero, long before Deadpool or that overrated Black Pussycat crap and NOBODY made a big fuss about it,back in the day. It was just a fun Action/Horror movie with a badass main character, same goes for the sequel. The third movie, was a complete desaster, because the studio threw away the original script(which was co-written by Wesley Snipes) and they hired Stephen S.Goyer to re-write and direct it.(That's the guy who wrote BvS!) Originally, the third movie, would take place in the dystopian future, whre vampires enslaved humanity and Blade fights with a human resistance group,to take them down.None of this was in the third movie.

If it wasn't for the first Blade movie, Marvel would still be looking to find a way to scratch the service onto the silver screen today. "Blade" was the first Mainstream Movie based on a Marvel property. And your absolutely right, the first Blade movie was really good because of it's execution as a Horror, Action, Movie, instead of a typical superhero movie. The first two Blade movies still hold up better than any of the other Marvel movies made today. The Blade movies certainly had their own identity, they were very original, and Wesley Snipes as Blade was a perfect casting marriage, like Hugh Jackman as "Wolverine/Logan" or Hugo Weaving as "V". Snipes didn't play the character, He Was The Character, he owned it. Great video essay. I too would kill to see Snipes reprise the role again.

A Blade 4 could be pretty easy from a premise perspective. Wesley Snipes is older now, so play into that of Blade getting older, and being unsure if all his work has even accomplished anything. Vampires are still around, still killing, and he just doesn’t seem to be able to stem the tide, not to mention his age is making him slower and weaker. Maybe he has to take on a protege, or finally do something once and for all that will wake people up to the Vampire threat. Call it Blade: Legacy, since 4 sounds too old given the age of the series, the films themselves are in a sense Wesley’s legacy, and the lack of a number makes it easier for newer audiences who would want to watch a superhero film that’s different from the norm by being a R rated horror/action film.

Everything depends on what kind of film do we actually want. If it's something akin to Logan, then the story is straightforward - Blade is older now, everyone wants to hunt him down (he's a legend and anyone who'd kill a legend would become a legend himself) and this time there's no Whistler or the Nightstalkers to help him. He's alone, he's old and he knows the ageing won't stop unless he starts to feed like a regular vampire - which he refuses, as always. Then he finds a protege, trains him and finally dies in some epic way in the end. OOOORRRR... we can go with something darker. Way, way darker. It's been 10 years since Blade: Trinity. The Daywalker discovered some time ago that his crusade can't continue much longer - he's begun to grow old. He needs to feed on humans, maybe even other vampires just to keep himself more or less sane. He knows that with each day his time is coming to an end, and the vampires are waiting patiently in the shadows for that exact moment. They will rule everything. But Blade won't let that happen. He won't let the symbol that he became die with him. So he starts his final journey, hoping of finding someone who can and will continue the fight when he's gone. Boom, cut to like 20 years later. Blade movs unseen through the world, having created a web of safehouses for him to rest in and regenerate. Vampires are at the top - they control everything, from media to meat processing. People are living normally, not knowing who's really in charge. The shadow war continues as it always had. We don't know what happened during the 20 years or so, but finally there's some hope for Blade - he finds another daywalker (bear with me). And just like Whistler all those years ago, he trains this second daywalker to become The Blade - a symbol of fear for bloodsuckers. With his Legacy secure, they can begin their fight in earnest. Somewhere around 3/4ths of the film it is discovered that Blade needed to feed to keep going, which comes as a shock because his number one rule was "to never feed on live blood" or something like that. The story moves on and right before the final battle the thruth is revealed - not only did the original Blade feed, he even went so far as to try and recreate his own story with a vampire attacking a pregnant woman, so that a daywalker might be born. Our protege, the New Blade, is exactly that - an experiment, a successful one that is. There were others like him but they all "failed" in the eyes of their creator and were slain by his hand. THE fight starts - between master and apprentice (and there's no higher ground this time), ending in... Well, they'd need to make that film first, right? ;-)

I think people overstate Blade's importance to comic book films reigning supreme. The vast majority of the audience had no idea Blade was based on a comic book character. Hell, the late 90s is when I started really getting into comics and I had no idea. The films are also VERY loose adaptations at that - pretty close to in name only, really. I'd say the success of those films in relation to the glut of superhero films of the past almost 20 years is more internal to the studios than the general audience. Blade showed the suits in Hollywood these characters could print money. X-Men from 2000 showed audiences that these characters can be given the proper treatment.

Now, I never really became a fan of Blade. But I can see the influence it had. But it does remind me of a saying we have about competing in the Eurovision Song Contest: "The worst thing you can end up doing... is winning." Because apart from ABBA, most winners see their careers end at that point. Movies are a bit like that. They thrive when budgets are mid range. You get to do some out there stuff but still retain control and you know your place in the grand scheme of things. Then the dice is rolled. And you get three scenarios. 1. You bring in a modest profit, you earned a bit of a rest and you continue to explore and grow the talents. Everyone is happy about their jobs and move on. This is the best option. 2. You bomb. Career over. Bad option. 3. Box office hit... Fudge! Now you have to scramble together a franchise, you get an unweildy amount of money, but you cannot use it effectively because there are strings attached to every penny. And ALL of the studio heads constantly butt in and messes with things to ensure more success. Your cast gets planetoid egos. Suddenly a half of your finished cut is scheduled for reshoots because a focus group of preteen boys found the bodyhorror segment of your "Hard R" film too unnerving and edicts come down from above that the already shot and finished and approved infection-ending is to be replaced with Xeroxed teletubbies... What do you mean you cannot cut it by july? Ad campaigns have been proclaiming since box office reports from the last film came in that a film with that name will come out by July 3rd. Release whatever you have on the edit bay... etc .. I consider this the worst option because it's frankly embarrasing how often it happens. Again. If you want good films, stay clear of block busters hits and bombs... The midrange successes know what they're going for and has most of the means to get there.

The _Blade_ trilogy were some of my favorite films as a teenager. I remember being fourteen or fifteen years old and renting the first two over and over again from the local Hollywood Video. And when the third came out when I was sixteen, I was all over it. (Albeit, I sadly didn't get a chance to see any of them in theaters.) In retrospect now, I can plainly see just how flawed and problematic _Blade: Trinity_ was... but I have a certain sense of nostalgia for it. It just brings back such pleasant memories of watching it over and over alongside the first two when I was in High School. It's a bad film... but it's one of those bad films I can't help but kinda love, just because of what it represents to me. And weirdly enough, I know several people who got into the _Blade_ trilogy because they saw _Trinity_ first, and then went back and watched the first two.

Blade 2 is my favorite, MARVEL should make a Netflix Blade series but better than the 2006 show that already existed with horror elements, either cast a new actor or bring Snipes back again. There's even a Blade anime show, if you've seen it, what do you think of it? The only horror action movies I can think of are 80 & 90s Chinese/Hong Kong Asian horror movies, Mr.Vampire, A Chinese Ghost Story, etc.

I'm glad you didn't make the assertion - which I often see fans make online - that Blade 1 did the bullet-time effect before The Matrix. It really didn't! Sure, Blade features a bullet-dodging scene in which a slow-motion bullet is visible - but the slow-motion action is not combined with *normal-speed camera movement*, which is the key thing that defines bullet time as a special effect, as opposed to a normal slow-motion shot. The effects shot in Blade is no more bullet-time than the CGI bullet in Die Another Day's gun barrel! And while we're at it The Matrix didn't "rip off Blade's trenchcoats and shades" style either. The two films were produced far too closely together for it to have had any influence.

The interesting thing is that even if they wanted to reboot the character with another actor, there's still a place for Snipes. The character of Abraham Wistler was created for the movie by David Goyer, and Blade's original mentor figure from the comics was actually a Harlem raised African American Vampire Hunter named Jamal Afari. That part would have Wesley Snipes written all over it, even if he didn't have any connection to the franchise.

I really feel like the original version of Blade the Vampire-Slayer, the one with no real powers other than immunity to being turned, who wasn't just a generic sword-wielding martial artist, but was rather an expert with wooden, teak knives, would have made for a more interesting movie protagonist than his super-powerful movie counterpart. He was a perennial underdog against vampires, which to me, made him more interesting and sympathetic. Also, his jive-lingo and down-to-Earth attitude made for a fun contrast with the Shakespearean lingo of his vampire enemies. I'd like to see the original version at least given a chance at some point. And for those familiar with the comics, the original Blade's humanity and hatred of vampires allowed for him to have that interesting relationship with Hannibal King, the one vampire who was able to resist the curse.
