The Blackwing 24 pays tribute to Pulitzer Prize winning author John Steinbeck. Designed under the guidance of his son, accomplished author Thomas Steinbeck, we’ve attempted to create what would have been John Steinbeck’s ideal pencil.
Thom was adamant that his father would want it to be black, from barrel to eraser. It would also need to sharpen to a firm point without sacrificing much, if any, darkness. The Blackwing 24 is just that - an all-black pencil with a brand new graphite formulation perfect for extended writing.
John believed in the benefits of rituals. Before putting graphite to paper, he would sharpen 24 pencils and place them point up in the first of two identical wood boxes. Each pencil lasted just long enough to dull its point - usually four or five lines - before being placed in the second box, point down. After all 24 pencils had progressed from one box to the other, John would resharpen each pencil, and begin the process anew. According to Thom, some days he would use over 100 pencils.

I wish this one became a standard Blackwing.
Thomas Steinbeck died less than 5 months after the publication of this video on youtube, according to Wikipedia from "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease", one couldn't ignore his hard breathing on the video, let this pencil and what Blackwing stands for be also a tribute to him...
That's a good ritual to have before starting to write for the day - sharpening several pencils to have ready. Great tip!

Yes! Finally a Volumes pencil that starts with the all-important sleek design. It doesn't hurt that Steinbeck's son gave us some insights into his old man's process, too. Fascinating. Quite similarly, when I'm at work I have an assortment of Blackwings, Blackwing 602's (my favourite) and Blackwing Pearls spread across my desk. I'll often sharpen them in the morning and simply reach for whichever one is sharpest throughout the day rather than constantly re-sharpening. I think I'm going to have to order me some of these muhfuckas.

That is a cool ritual. I love the tactile punch of the keyboard, but the scratching sound of a pencil or fountain pen has some elegance like you are carving words onto the paper. Shame that more schools are teaching with emphasis on typing over writing by hand. That’s what i heard many states are doing. Is that true?

Yeah no more pencil to paper where im at in Texas I’ve seen allot of schools not using pencils and allot more Keyboard 😔

You can go to a barnes and nobles sometimes they have these on discount if you are lucky you might be able to buy a box
What kind of paper is good for writing with a pencil? I have 2b and 4b pencils from Faber Casttel and Seadtler. But after a couple of days everything I've written looks a bit blurry. I guess it's the paper I use.

@@ericparham1086 because 4b is a soft lead and is good for shading in art. use something more like HB for a harder lead

Blackwing is way over priced. Musgrave Tennessee Red or Harvest 320 Pro are American made, are far less expensive, and write as well or better.
