Of course is clean … this is not a forge, it’s a normal iron factory with modern machines. Nothing is really handmade
Nice clean work John!. Don't know where you live, but it's great to have wooded land to explore. I have 16 acres of woodland on my land with a beautiful creek running through it. Peaceful to just go air and listen to the water running over the rocks.
No way , new and new video. That insane. Blacksmith tool marathon.
I enjoi your work and I have a small suggestion. Make a small round or square iron logo, then heat it and stamp/impress on the wood handles. It's a 30 seconds job but gives an extra touch in the final design 👍🏽
I like the go for a walk Segway. Sometimes I forget about nature and how important it is to get out of the shop etc.

Very nice job, RI! Beautiful tool!
Again... beautiful work sir!! You and your channel are inspirational and a great asset to the blacksmithing community on KZread!!
I'm more of a woodworker myself but I appreciate the excellent craftsmanship. I was just waiting for him to cut the handle flush and hammer in an oak wedge.

Your monosteel projects are beautiful. But what about Damascus? I know it's a lot more work, but I think it would be really interesting. (Also, I like how you took a break to go birdwatching and it's part of the video.)

Man, I would but this forge doesn't seem to get hot enough. I need to build a new forge to handle forge welded projects.
Torbjorn Ahmen vibes for sure.

Can we get a shop tour?
After watching several of your videos, I wonder how those wood handles stay in place long term. It looks like they are just tapped into place. Once you actually start using these tools, how do the handles not work themselves loose?
@rigoniironworks

When in use with a striker the handle needs to be "flexible". If it was wedged it could crack/break. And yes, it will need to be driven tight in between heats if loose.

*These are top tools. Hammers of course need to have wedges.
A smith from Sweden,I think,does similar video work when he anneals or soaks his steel...
а расклинить рукоять молотка ? после трёх ударов молоток слетит.
Someone's been watching Torbjorn Ahman's videos, haven't they?

What kind off style you use to make that hamer ? # ? Pls.
So why didn't you put a wedge in it?? Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
@rigoniironworks

Thanks, it's a top tool, no wedge. Hammers get wedges.
Great stuff. Does the handle not require any further securing by way of a wedge? Also, I'm trying to understand why the annealing step happens after hardening, and not the other way around. Apologies for my ignorance, but I'm learning a lot by watching your videos!
@rigoniironworks

Thanks, this is 4140/medium carbon, oil quench to harden. I then heat the part to slightly soften/temper it. This reduces hardness, gaining toughness and strength.

Regarding the wedge, I believe this a tool that will be struck and not swung so it probably doesn’t need to be wedged.
I'm ignorant, how does the head stay on after the first swing?
When did you move to TX?

Is there such a thing as a concave fuller?
@rigoniironworks
3 жыл бұрын
haha, prob not. I needed the tool/shape and couldn't find a similar one online. Basically, a rounding hammer you can hit.
@mitchelperkins6723

Actually yes there is. Brian Brazeal makes them. I did one as well. It is a top tool used with a drift in the eye of top tools. When releasing the tool from the drift, or when forming the faces of a fuller for making fuller troughs in hammers, it forges the struck end of the top tool to a slightly rounded shape. Or relieves the edges of the struck end. Easier to forge that shape in than to have to grind it in. Also being forged it gives the struck end more life than grinding it.
И сколько же стоит такой инструмент ?
