Thanks for spreading the knowledge! I’m in the U.S. but those are my people! Basically, the British and the USA had a few industries in Costa Rica in the late 1890’s - 1930’s. So a lot of black people from Jamaica immigrated to Costa Rica to work on the railroad project or work for the United Fruit Company. The story goes that Jamaicans (black people) are more resistant to malaria, so they were recruited to come live and work in Costa Rica. And maybe an added bonus that they spoke English (Jamaican accent of course). I believe the majority of black people in Costa Rica are from that migration. Similar thing happened in Panama to build the canal. Although in Panama, it’s not just Jamaicans. Trinidad and Barbados folks were also recruited. Keep up the great work!

Job very well done.

What an interesting comment, ill like to research more but yea it sounds very logical we were once very close together just take a look at the shape of each continent perhaps something happened that separated us. I have a humble theory that we were once one ethnicity but the thousands of years later we became different because our bodies adapted to our environments.

I’m half Costa Rican and African American in the USA. Oh the blacks been mixing with the white Spaniards for years. My uncle is in the photo and the video with the stripe shirt. Some of the blacks in Limon went from white to black to white. My grand father was half black but he married a black women and everybody came out black. The majority of my family that still lives in Limon is now mixed. I appreciate you sharing the history of blacks of Limon. When people travel to Costa Rica and Panama they will understand why they here original Jamaican reggae and dance hall music playing.
