You can even hear the camera shutter sound and see the flash. He takes one pic as soon as he deploys and then 2 more after Tyrese gets up and runs which is why they use the kind of freeze frame effect. Its very subtle but super clever. I would say the initial O shit moment was just before that, when the pilot's holographic nature is revealed (blinking image). Then you know for sure that the chopper is in fact a Transformer. I mean before that, when the helicopter is approching the Katar base, you kinda think that maybe it could be a Decepticon or an Autobot, right? But it's when you find out the pilot is fake that you're like: oh yeah, shit is about to get real! I'll be honest with you, though: I only disagreed with you because the pilot thing happened BEFORE the rotor thing. Can u imagine how significant this scene is. For the first time ever, especially as a kid seeing this in theatres. First ever live action transformers. All the cartoons and toys, we wouldn't have imagined how it would look like in real life and this was the first scene, the CGI was mind-blowing. Holds up even to this day, you couldn't tell how long ago this was. I remember being a kid in that very theatre and boy oh boy the conversations at school the next day was insane. Everyone was talking about it, reenacting this scene. We memorised all the names of the decepticons and autobots. Truly redefining, indescribable and jaw dropping. I am so thankful for this memory
I loved the decepticons in this movie. They were smart enough to one disguise themselves as authority, Target information, take out Communication, and even try to take out loose ends. Their whole plan was sound.
This was the Jurassic Park of 2007 Back then NO ONE thought it was possible for a human truck, helicopter etc to transform into robots the size of buildings practically and while the franchise has suffered from too many explosions, juvenile humor and less than stellar acting the robots were always outstanding nm what they turned into.

Looking back and watching this scene, it makes me actually fear the Decepticons. Here you have this seemingly normal helicopter flying into base, when suddenly it starts to shift at what might’ve been considered impossible angles to form this giant ass robot, and said giant ass robot start to blow the living hell out of the military base. Ruthlessly killing the soldiers there, as the soldiers see that their weapons are having seemingly no effect on it. Then later in the movie when Lennox sees Blackout land atop a building in mission city, his immediate reaction is one of dread. Makes you wonder where this was in the rest of the movies. That’s my opinion, don’t know it anyone else shares it.

This is one of the many reasons why I'll always consider this movie the best of the ones made under Michael Bay. The first every live action transformer transforming did not disappoint, this scene was perfectly done
To this day, this scene is still absolutely terrifying. The amounthe of dread an confusement that these soldiers would have had in them would be immeasurable. An absolutely amazing way to start this movie.
I think an unappreciated genius aspect of this scene is the fact that literally everyone watching this knew it was going to be a Transformer. In spite of that, they still managed to make the revelation impactful and as memorable as if you didnt know it was a Transformer at first
blackouts transformation is scary af
My dad took me to watch this opening night and when this scene came up I remember his words exactly “that’s what I’m talking about..” best feeling ever when your dad likes what you love 💪
"Power down now. Have your crew step out or we will kill you" >Blackout stops the propeller and transforms into his robot form. Sounds like he did exactly what the commander said. I'd be a little agitated too if military guys started shooting me even after doing what they told me to do.

Blackout was lucky that there were no Abrams that greeted him on that runway. Those are one of the few things in that base that could directly hurt him.
Totally agree with everyone’s take in the comments regarding the tone of this scene. I’m all for the autobots and the franchise having its occasional goofiness/campiness when done right and sparingly, but when it comes to how they should have depicted the decepticons throughout the entirety of the bayverse, this scene should have been the framework for the rest of the series going forward. Ultimately, the Decepticons should have evoked a sense of dread every time they showed up on screen as these colossal, unstoppable, alien, terminator-kaijus that humans are ultimately outmatched against without the help of the autobots. Fun Fact: Blackout was Megatron’s Third-in-Command
This scene was intense. Blackout was savage and arguably has the best transformation sequence.

I miss this portrayal of the Decepticons. Almost invincible to human weapons, and basically just an unstoppable machine of destruction and evil. Even just one was a SERIOUS threat that took multiple Autobots to take down, and humans could do little besides try to weaken them. By the third movie they were basically made out of cardboard and fell apart under machine gun fire that Blackout was just ignoring here.

I grew up in the 80's loving the TV series and had many of the toys. I was 27 when I saw this in theaters. 3 things made me lose my mind in this scene: 1. When Blackout's rotor blades came to a complete stop 2. When I heard the original 80's "transform" sound worked into the effects 3. The VFX of the actual transformation, which are still insane-especially for 2007
I remember how epic this was seeing this in theaters (i was 17). It's a shame that the movies that followed were utter garbage.
This scene has stuck with me ever since I first saw it as a kid. It's just the way the rotor stops on a dime, raises into the air and all blades relocate to the back. It is done so suddenly and so smoothly that it still takes me by surprise. The sounds it makes as it happens just sells the whole thing. The whole transformation is great, but that rotor, just the rotor's movement and sound alone gets you excited.
I remember watching this in theater being 11 years old. I was amazed on how well this scene was. BEST INTRO EVER. I was a big decepticon fan, they did them justice in this movie
General Shepherd saved humanity by cutting the hard line.
I saw this scene as a kid in theaters in 2007 and at the time it sucked the air out of the room. For adults too. It made such an impression that today I sought out this scene thinking “it can’t be anywhere near that good.” And you know what? When those chopper blades just STOP. I still feel it. It is that good.
