Overall the image quality is almost identical in both the 6K and 4K versions of the pocket cinema cameras. I say almost because even though the colors and dynamic range is identical the resolution alone does make a difference. The 6k sensor creates noticeably sharper and more detailed images. It also helps a bit in hiding the noise when shooting at higher ISO and low light situations.
Another minor thing I noticed is the limitations of the codecs. For example when shooting in either of the two versions of 6K (16:9 or 2.4:1 aspects) or in 5.7K or 2.8K resolutions plus Anamorphic, you are limited to only the BRAW (Blackmagic RAW) codec. Once you switch the resolution to 4K or HD it then defaults to Apple ProRes. I wonder if Blackmagic will be addressing that in a future firmware. For me personally this wasn’t a problem since I always shot in 6K and I also prefer BRAW format. Also if you are wondering about the 4K Apple ProRes format, it does actually use the whole sensor, so no cropping happening there.

    Aaand here's the man I'd listen to when it comes to gear. Thank you for the knowledgeable, non-biased and easy to understand review as always, Tom! I'm definitely happy with my newly arrived p4k and considering I'll most likely downscale to 1080p for the project I bought this for, it'll serve me very well. If I had to deliver 4k footage then I'd love the 6k as I can downscale for a sharper look but even so, a bit of sharpening in Resolve should do the trick with my current gear.

    Thanks for the review, fair as slways. I own the P4k and still have no real need for the P6k yet but I will for sure get one with in time. I love the Idea of having super 35mm on the Pocket to have bit better match to my UMP and have native EF mount, those things means the moast for me to have the pocket 6k, shooting in 6k is just a plus for me and I can of course see some use for it, even in 4k projects. I am usung pocket 4k on my drone in 4k raw but it would be nice being able to shoot 6k raw on the drone so the p6k will come in handy. Again thanks for your reviews, plain facts fair and honest reviews are always welcome.

    @@maoyron True...it sucks. I fail to understand why they have limited the 6K. But for the price 6K is still a steal. Perhaps they will introduce it with updates. I am relatively new to cinematic cameras and I was going for the BMPCC 4k with speedbooster as I take tiny steps into film making. But as a seasoned Canon (photography) user the mount on the 6K is big deal for me. The money saved on the speedbooster or new mft lens will be spend on 6k and I get to use my canon lenses. I will appreciate if you have any thoughts about my plan.

    I have the pocket 4k and I use it with Rokinon Cine DS lenses with EF mount with a Metabones T Cine speed booster XL 0.64x. This configuration makes it better for low light conditions because the speed booster gives an 1 1/3 stop extra. That means when I set the ISO to 3200 is like I'm exposing to 8000 ISO. I like that. I love the benefit of the speed booster that makes it better in low light conditions. I think you never considered that when you talked about it, because when you use the speed booster you have to compensate the exposure for the extra 1 1/3 stop that makes the lens even faster.

    This is great. My only question would be 120fps vs 120fps on the 6k and 4K Are they similar? Or 6k having less moire and jaggies?

    Tom, love your reviews, and this is one of the best. I do have a question. Can you use Canon's EF-S lenses--such as the STM zoom lenses on the Pocket 6k? And what other lenses can you recommend that will have stabilization for hand held shooting? Thnks!

    Hello Tom. Great review as always. Thanks a lot for this works. I have the BMPCC 4K and when I film (or shot? Sorry for my english) in RAW 2K it creates an adicional crop factor because filming in 2K only use half sensor. My cuestion is: If you use the BMPCC 6K but film in RAW 4K, do you get and adicional crop factor or use the whole super 35 sensor en RAW 4K too?

    The problem with RAW is that it's raw sensor data, so that means that 4K raw from the Pocket 6K sensor would mean it would be windowed so it would be the same as the Pocket 4K image area.

    The best and detailed review so far for P6K. I use P4K for doc. I always use 1:8 ratio for 4K but the size is going to be too big with P6K. I would like to know if 1:12 ratio of P6K comparing with 1:8 of 4K as to quality.

Do you think this would be a good all around lens for documentary interviews ?

    Hi, Tom great review! I noticed that you don't get any vignetting with the sigma 18-35 at 18mm with the speedbooster. I do get vignetting on the mine but I have a Commlite focal reducer which works great besides this annoying vignetting! My question is, you never get vignetting with the speedbooster? not even when you shoot 4k dci? thanks for your time!

  • @TomAntos

    @TomAntos

    4 жыл бұрын

    There is slight vignetting with the speedbooster if you look closely but not as noticable as with the Commlite adapter. That's why I dont use my Commline. It's the same in 4K DCI, metabones has a slight vignetting but still works for me.

    I just have only canon lenses and I loved the BMPCC4k but it’s almost the same price as the BMPCC6k (including the speedbooster). Also I love the S35 style, it gives the image something and idk I just am used to it and I really prefer it, instead of full frame. It’s the perfect camera for me but idk if it is for everyone.

    Great review Tom.Like camera specs it has really good features for that price.Easy to use and operate.This is a good step up for blackmagic.And good step for the industry. Nobody was able to touch good uncompressed RAW footage in the past for less then 30000 usd$. But if you want to have accurate colors this is not the right choice.If you look carefully in the image you will notice that there is a brownish tint. Like sepia filter applied over the picture. Check the greenery in these footages. It doesn't look correct. This is the biggest disadvantage of all blackmagic cameras together with the fixed noise pattern in the dark areas. For green screen keying is it ideal solution.Low noise in the green channel.Good overexposed and underexposed compensation range.The quality is much better when you overexpose then underexpose the picture. It is perfect for small production with low budgets looking for professional quality. If they fix the color space to make it look very close to the reality the other big camera makers are in real trouble. :))) For sure good camera to have it.
