Blackhawk! SERPA Sportster vs CQC

Most people looking at the Blackhawk! Serpa holster system have wondered what the difference is between the cheaper Sportster version and the more expensive CQC holster. The biggest difference between the two is that the CQC holster is made of a carbon fiber material and the Sportster is made of polymer. Both are excellent options. However, it is recommended that if you plan to use this as a law enforcement officer or in any sort of combat, that you purchase CQC.
Another difference is color. The Sportster is available only in gun metal gray, while the CQC is available in Black, Coyote Tab, Olive Drab, and Foliage Green.
The CQC also comes with a belt loop attachment while the Sportster is only available with the paddle.
This is a phenomenal holster for quick draw at the range. The SERPA system allows you to un-holster your weapon while keeping your trigger finger on the frame.
I would highly recommend either of these holsters to anyone in the market.

Operate the Serpa trigger with your finger extended and it works great. The problem comes fron Newbies with Golcks with ghost triggers, stab at the Serpa trigger with their finger tip. It's all about trigger cisalpine and training. The Serpa is a outstanding system.

Also VERY glad I found your video. You demonstrated how the Holsters worked, their Pro's & Con's and most of all the Belt attachment versus the paddle. I have one of these and used it in Arizona for my Springfield XD without the Paddle and wish I had used the paddle. Now I have a M&P 9 and will be using the paddle CQC version. THANKS

Excellent video. Even after all the hype about the "inherent danger" of the location of the release lever, I still have to agree with the reviewer that it's hard to imagine such poor muscle memory training that after releasing the catch the person drawing the weapon would proceed to grab and pull the trigger. I'd say that if every product which 0.004% of the users of said product found a way to hurt themselves was take off the market, there would be virtually nothing to buy at all.....just my two cents, ymmv.

6:50, that's what thigh rigs are for :) Great review! I've always bought the CQC version without even knowing the difference LOL. Thanks for the explanation between the two. I love the Serpa system, I've owned 3 (sold one due to selling the gun, didn't need it anymore). I use one for my duty carry for LE, and have one for off-duty. They make a larger version of the LVL 2 retention for duty carry that extends the pistol a little bit from your body and drops it a little bit. Also some guys I work with really like the LVL 3.

Also, it has the holes for the belt securing hooks, and the box says it comes with them, but it did not. The only thing sort of like it that came with it, was these little plastic things on the belt loop attachment for adjusting for different belt sizes.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but isn't the fact that one is more tight than the other is simply because default adjustment of the fitting screw is slightly different? And also thank you for the review it was very informative and cleared my doubts towards these two holsters. Cheers and stay safe!:)

Good video, I have two holsters and with very little practice the release becomes second nature. And the fact you can lock your pistol in the holster securely, no matter what position you may find yourself in. The military, police, and others, have been using them for some time now. Don't get hung up on the release compared to all the benefits and safety. Nay Sayers, you practice to load, shoot, disassemble your firearm, then practice to where your trigger finger should be, for safety.

  • @seaswirl79

Ok, I have to straighten this video out. Both holsters are made of polymer. The carbon fiber is APPEARANCE only. It is not made of carbon fiber. It simply goes through one more process to give it the carbon fiber appearance, which is why it cost more. If it was actually made of carbon fiber, it would be MUCH more expensive than what it is. This information was obtained from BLACKHAWK today when I talked to them on the phone to find out the difference. Police and security may want to opt for the carbon fiber appearance because it is nicer looking and has a more dressy look, that's all. Even the description on Blackhawks website says : SERPA® CQC® Concealment Holster Carbon-Fiber Finish. FINISH!!! Not made from carbon fiber, as Blackhawk told me, it has the APPEARANCE of Carbon Fiber, it's not ACTUALLY carbon fiber.

Glad I found this. One of the best reviews of the Blackhawk CQC Serpa holster. Many reviews I looked for did not show it on the person and offering feedback on how it feels, etc. On the Sportster holster, you mentioned it's a slightly tighter fit. Did adjusting the screw in the front help it so that it is looser fit? I own the Blackhawk CQC Serpa, but not the Sportster. I have it for both Sig P226, and G19.

Nice review and nice gun! I bought the sportser for a G19 but I didn't like the paddle attachment. I had problems with it digging into my side/hip. I bought the belt loop attachment and haven't had any problems with it digging in. The only thing I don't like about the belt loop is that it seems to move the pistol further away from your side causing it to stick out more. I'll have to put the paddle back on just to double check. Maybe its just because of the type of gun I use and the design. Did you notice anything like that? I've since purchased a level 3 due to my near entrance into law enforcement plus I think the Level 3's look awesome and the functionality is great. Hated the low ride belt attachment that comes with the L3 though, had to buy the high ride for that as well. I've been looking at the serpa system shoulder holster for another carry option. Don't like the thought of always having to move the holster itself back and forth from the shoulder to the belt loop though - for $35 might as well just buy a additional holster and not have to worry about it

the accidental discharges came from hitting the release button to hard when drawing and having you finger slip into the trigger. Of course these typically happen during stressful situations. Another issue is having a little rock enter the release button and jamming it and locking the firearm in there.

Excellent video. Very nicely done. I was going to ask about the vest, too, but someone beat me to it. So you had to buy an additional component to mount the CQC on the vest? Right now I'm using a crotch concealed holster which is OK, but i wanted to try out something like this. Let me ask ya - as you mention, there's a definite imprint when you're using this. What about a bad guy coming up from behind and grabbing it? Thanks again for the vid. Cheers.

I had the Sportster for my Glock 22, and sold that Gun with the holster. Now have a CQC level 2(dipicted in your video) for my Sig P220 Elite Dark. I don't like the paddle's. The paddles are also meant to go inside the waistband of ones pants (not comfortably). The Sportster is more for the concealed carrier where the CQC's level's two and three(especially level 3) are meant for Law Enforcement. The CQC level 3's have the hatch on top to add even further retension and protection from a weapn being accessed.

nice comparison but the way people get negligent discharges with the serpa is that they arch their finger trying to get a faster draw and when you arch your finger it automatically slips into the trigger guard and the trigger might get pulled but then the people who do that are so embarrassed that they start blaming the holster or the gun.

The reason people complain about what I think is low cost quality holster is, the tactardians out there buy this holster, they think I look tacticool and that they will be able to out draw anyone on the range, without proper training and having trigger finger discipline from the get go, they draw fast, once again not having trigger finger discipline, trying to get their finger on the trigger immediately after it leaves the holster, the rest is self explanatory.

  • @biteme19671

BTW I own 6 of these and waiting to purchase more, I have the drop leg platform as well in FDE and black, when I show up to a range and they state I cannot use this holster on their range, I ask why and when the tactardian R O, begins to spout off some regurgitated information, I just shut them down, tell them have a nice day, that I will not be returning to their establishment and for anyone that says, that's it's a hot piece of garbage, as some one has quoted on KZread. I say good day, you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground.

CQC ( Close Quarters Combat) must mean something totally differently from Concealed Carry for a normal everyday CCP/CWP everyday citizen. Because this rig does not offer a good concealed carry option/system. I have one of these units, it's solid and reliable, but I don't see how it can be used as an every day "Concealed Carry" system. It does not fit that 'concealed carry' mode/mold. One would have to work with it a bit or a lot to fit their carry means and modes to make it work for them. I personally don't find the Serpa model a viable unit to use as an every day "concealed carry" option.

It is not mandatory for the public to be trained properly on firearms. 2nd I'm sure most of the civilian population carrying a firearm are not schooled in the use of deadly force, state (RSA). You pull the trigger on someone, good luck''

Raymond Marquis I don't know where you are from, but most states that issue a concealed weapons permit require a mandatory training class as well as a back ground finger print check. In the case of South Carolina where I live, it is a mandatory classroom with live fire exercise. In neighboring North Carolina, the program can be no less than 8 hours.

Nice review, but seeing someone blatantly disregard the three cardinal rules of gun safety really worries me. Doesn't mean you don't know gear, but you should know this first: 1) Always treat every gun like it's loaded - you did practice draws, cleared your sig, and released the hammer while pointing your gun to the inside of your house, not to mention your AR 2) Never put your finger inside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot - I counted at least 3 times 3) Never point a gun at something you are not willing to destroy (even if it's not loaded - see rule #1) - You may not have broken this directly since you were pointing at the camera, but you did also point your guns at a wall with possible unknown human targets behind them

CLplusP what makes you say that? Almost every website I've seen advertises this holster as carbon fiber?

GFO270 i realized that after I left the comment. I left the comment thinking about that one serpa with the fake carbon fiber look. Besides that, i honesty thought the rest of the serpas were plain polymer

Are you in Law Enforcement? I pick up more trustees from the jail to clean the PD that have pulled a gun in public than I can count! The pubic has no idea what their in for or the liability in carrying a hand gun.
