BlackFiveDay in Preston with LMS 44871 (11th May 2024).

In this video we see 44871 arriving in Preston with the final steam hauled section of RTC's "Cumbrian Mountain Express" on Sat 11th May 2024. 44871 was put incharge of the tour from Carnforth heading to Carlisle via Shap & then for the return journey travelled from Carlisle to Preston via the Settle and Carlisle Line. With it now being May there's still a further two months to go until a decision is reached regarding if WCR will be allowed to use none CDL stock for the rest of the 2024 season, need to make the most of seeing steam hauled tour's operated by WCR just incase this goes pear shaped.
With West Coast Railways still not able to use their non CDL fitted coaches and as none of the stock are vacuum fitted (are only air braked), the only engine available for RTC's "Cumbrian Mountain Express" on Sat 11th May 2024 was Ian Riley's LMS Black five number 44871. Seeing 44871 hauling railtours south of the Scottish border is certainly a rare sight especially on an RTC trip over the S&C which is normally run using one of WCR's resident engines at Carnforth.
44871 at present is one of only two operational dual braked steam engines available to haul excursion trains, the only other presently being 34067 Tangmere. Riley's second engine 45407 since my last sighting of a Riley owned engine is now up in Fort William alongside the Worth Valley's black five number 45212 (preferably id hoped it would have been 45212 that was kept south of the border and 44871 sent to Fort William, however she'd already moved to Fort William before the Great Britain tour began).

Good video showing the arrival of 44871 into Preston, makes a change from seeing 34067 Tangmere hauling a charter train in Lancashire. And also a change from seeing 44871 only running on Jacobute trains in Scotland.

With there being no afternoon Jacobites being planned presently it looks like we might not be seeing 44871 venture north into Scotland this year as both 45212 and 45407 should be able to handle the trains without issues. I just hope that whenever Carnforth get their next steam engine running after an overhaul it has air brakes fitted, Bodmin I think is the next engine due out.

Seeing 44871 instead of 34067 hauling a CME tour makes a good change. Just a shame that Carnforth didn't dual brake the rest of their steam engines as now they are missing out and rely on only 1.

Good seeing a Riley owned black 5 operating south of the border for once, this could be for quite a while though since only the morning trains are operating presently and are easily possible to be covered by just 45212 and 45407 as only two engines are needed as it could be 1 loco hauls it one week and the other the next week. Pity it's not 45212 that's remained south of the border though.

A real change seeing a black five working a train in the North West rather than it being a Bulleid pacific.

A good selection if shots too, with the opening shots there's one from platform level and the 2nd looks like it was filmed from the footbridge. Would the person in the blue jacket below be you then.

Yes, the person in the blue denim jacket below is me. With the shot above 44871 that was actually filmed with the tripod being set up halfway up the stairs to the platform and overbridge.

May I ask why 44871 has a 65J (Stirling) Shed Plate.? Was she a Stirling based Black 5.?

  • @MasterMoyle

65J is actually the shedcode for Fort William, it's most likely been done as it's almost all the time for most of each year based in Fort William on Jacobite duties. The blue background being for Scottish based engines too.

It's the shedcode for Fort William not Stirling.

For an engine built in 1945 meaning it will be 79 years old this year its had a good preserved life, operated in preservation for longer than with the LMS and BR combined. I'm surprised that only a small handfull of LMS built black fives survived into preservation while the majority of them (11) are outside contractor engines.
