Why not studying traps in order not to fall for them? Low elo players will try to use traps on you very often. And refuting them is mostly really unintuitive if you don't know the trap.

@@TechnoRaabe Why not. I do study traps to avoid but as a beginner, knowing the checkmate patterns are very useful. Also we should try different openings.

@@jaguararts2296 im new too. Learning 2-3 openings thoroughly is enough i guess. As white i play kings indian attack or italian. As black kings indian defence or caro can. I don’t like early checkmates, play it slow, use more tactics and master the end game. There are many openings in chess, it’s hard to memorise them all, that’s why i found KIA and KID is the best openings for me. I may loose if i blunder but no early checkmate threats.

Don't learn traps. Study tactics, and especially how to not expose yourself tactically, in order to not fall in traps. Every trap is about tactics, so if you're strong enough, you will not fall into them, no matter if you know them or not. Trust me, that's the only way to really improve in chess. Not falling into traps just because you know them don't matter you're really strong. As a 2200-2300 online, when I see some traps, I'm strong enough to not fall, and even when I don't know them, I just think "Wait, how can you fall into that ??"

You generally wouldn't play this in classical game where your opponent has all the time to think. This is more for blitz where both players can make big blunders and still win.

@@JonDoe-uq1mk Nah, not even in blitz unless you're very beginner. Literally two weeks ago I faced exactly this trick as white in 3+2 tournament. My opponent was 1400 rated (lower than me but still). He got easily crushed even though I forgot the exact line. It's too easy to refute.

No need to pray for this to work, since even if white don't fall for it black is just fine. I analyzed possible lines in engine, so the trap is rather effective not leaving black in bad position after white avoids it. Also, the second most played move is 6.d6 and then winrate is 79% for black and only 29% for white. What in trying to say here, black has absolutely nothing to loose trying out this trap :-)

I peaked 1600 with the Grob opening, which is objectively waaaay worse than Blackburn, since you start the game with -1.06 evaluation as white on move 1.g6. If you play for elo, sure, learn Ruy Lopez or the Scandinavian and you are set, if you play for fun, and to get better at being tricky, these openings are a pretty good way to improve that.
