Blackbucks are the fastest terrestrial mammal in India, hitting a maximum speed of about 80kmph. They are predominantly found in the grasslands of Rajasthan and Gujarat with smaller populations scattered around central and southern India. They are currently under severe threat as their grassland habitats are being destroyed rampantly across India. Often touted as wastelands, these biodiverse regions are being converted into agricultural land, used for unscientific plantations and development. This fosters human-wildlife conflict. Free-ranging dogs are also a major threat.
