"Madwoman in the Attic" Lyrics:
--------------------------------------------------------
There are two sides to every story
Do you want to hear my version of the allegory?
I used to be beautiful and enigmatic
Now they call me the madwoman in the attic
Well, I sure as hell am mad
I tried to warn you, my foolish replacement
So you wouldn’t turn to be the madwoman in the basement
You loathed my free spirit
And locked me up so you could kill it
My crimes being self-willed and decadent
Wouldn't you turn malevolent?
I'm going to burn it all, I'm going to burn down Thornfield Hall
I tried to warn you, my foolish replacement
So you wouldn’t turn to be the madwoman in the basement
Madwoman, madwoman, madwoman in the attic
A strange wild animal, a beast, a manic
Madwoman, madwoman, madwoman in the attic
A strange wild animal, a beast, a manic
Madwoman, madwoman, madwoman in the attic
A strange wild animal, a beast, a manic
I tried to warn you, my foolish replacement
So you wouldn’t turn to be the madwoman in the basement

I've only recently discovered this band and knowing that they wrote a song based Jane Eyre makes me love them!

Not "Jane Eyre", but "Wide Sargasso Sea".
This wonderful song is based off the book "Jane Eyre", written by Charlotte Brontë, member of the Brontë family, in 1847. There have been several film adaptations, some of which are on YT. I watched the 1997 film on YT yesterday and loved it, it's the most interesting love story I've ever known of. I recommend watching the film (the 1997 adaptation or another one) to all of you.

Jean Rhys wrote an interesting interpretation of Bertha Rochester's story, _Wide Sargasso Sea_. It's written in Bertha's voice, and is considered a classic in its own right. You might find it interesting (if you haven't already read it).

Deep, dark, intense, harmonic. Mainstream music has nothing on it. Still cannot understand people, who dislike this kind of metal music.

its beautiful no doubt and better than most mainstream music but for me its still feels kinda shallow (songwriting-wise) since i like progressive music, this is very predictable and somewhat konservative music to my ears (sadly! i'd love zoras voice to sing over some more complex songstructures or some odd timesignature..)
Just read Jane Eyre for the first time and I remembered what this song was about and needed to come to hear it again. Thinking about this which was inspired by Jane Eyre and Mortal Remains which was inspired by Wuthering Heights... I guess someone in the band is a fan of the Brontes sisters haha

That was my first thought too, I love that book so much 😍😍😍
This song makes me think of the time my high school history teacher took time to discuss with the class just how far women's rights and medicine have progressed. In the Victorian Era, doctors had a tendency to diagnose women they treated with hysteria, AKA "being a woman disease" whenever they were dealing with chronic fatigue, stress; or side effects caused by medication (mercury was a bit common in medicines during the Era along with other nasty stuff). Even having an active imagination or trying to get a toe into discussions like politics was deemed to be madness brought on by that pesky uterus! What was the "cure" some women received for their illness? Why, being locked up of course! Sometimes in unseen rooms of their own home like attics and basements! It was also kinda common during the Victorian Era that some women would try to take advantage of another woman's suffering. If the lady of the house was being treated for hysteria, it wasn't uncommon for some upstart member of the help like a scullery maid to try and seduce the lord of the house in an attempt to better her status, and husbands that were already in an affair with another woman would claim their wife had gone mad just so she would be out of the picture. However like this song says, if the husband has an abusive nature and some foolish girl helped him lock away his wife under the claims of insanity, sooner or later the mistress could find herself in the same predicament when her lover grows bored and eyes a new prize. Things did improve a tiny bit after the 1900s with the invention of the electric vibrator. Some doctors believed that hysteria could be treated with stimulation of the lady parts, and most well off households had a special "Fainting Room" where the lady of the house could retire to whenever she was feeling unwell. A doctor would then be called, and he would come by and treat the poor woman by buzzing her muff. Some women would take advantage of these house calls, and sometimes call up the doctor just to perk up her day. Lol
Zora's voice continues to blow my mind how amazing her voice is
"You loathed my free spirit And locked me up so you could kill it" - i love it so much, it's also so sad. It refers to so many relations. Abusive parents to a child, abusive spouse or partner to another... It hurts so much. Beautiful song. This lyrics hit me. Wouldn't YOU turn malevolent?

This song makes me think of my narcissistic and abusive ex indeed, when I broke away from that relation, he painted me like lunatic to the rest of the world and his new prey.
So is this song about Bertha from Jane Eyre? I don’t why I didn’t realize it until I heard, “I’m going to burn Thornfield Hall”. LOVE IT! 🔥🖤🔥

I’m so in love with the entire EP but Madwoman in the attic now has a special place in my heart because of Bertha’s point of view. The band is amazing and Zora’s voice is hauntingly beautiful
Okay I just had a nerd fan girl moment that Jane Eyre reference made geek out 😂😂😂😂😂

Just watched the acoustic version claiming that's the most beautiful thing I heard this year. I stand corrected while buying the EP. Officially obsessed!!!
I love Jane Eyre! This is beautiful!
I have waited this for eternity....
I love it. Just... Speaking in the name of the villain who in the past was a normal or even a good person... This kind of stories, I love them. I love changing the point of view from the hero to the villain (of course, the villain must have good reasons for being that).
Zora....the mad woman in my head and no better place to hold her dearly. Unique and tireless. So thought provoking her style, Blckbriars style.
We are all mad here. Blackthorne Hall will surely erupt in flames. Love this attic mania.
Wow!!!!! Kisses from Brazil! I love this band! 🤘🖤

Everybody keeps mentioning Jane Eyre, but this side of the story is actually closer to "Wide Sargasso Sea" and how Rochester turned Antoinette into a mad Bertha. Just sayin' :)
@unapologeticallylizzy
4 жыл бұрын
That was also inspired by Jane Eyre, though. The plotline is from Jane Eyre. Besides, the chorus is clearly a reference to Bertha interacting with Jane. That bit is a clever idea.
@chrisstargazer6529
4 жыл бұрын
@@unapologeticallylizzy Of course it is inspired by Jane Eyre. Wide Sargasso Sea is a retelling of Bertha's story from her own point of view, showing how and why she became the "madwoman in the attic", ending with the burning down of Thornfield Hall. So yes, it is JE's story, but the pov is more related to WSS. I read that novel some 35 years ago, right after I read Jane Eyre. Can't say I liked it that much. It's extremely biased, with an anti-male/anti-white/anti-upper class feeling so strong that it could qualify as hatred. It's actually more akin to 2019 radical feminism and SJWs than to the more balanced and positive feminism of the late 60s. Still worth reading, though, if only because it is well written and an interesting counterpoint to Brontë's classic.
