Talking "like a plate of beans negotiating their way out of a cow's digestive system" is the pure essence of mastery of the English language, though. Exactly. That's why the first series of Blackadder (AKA the Black Adder) wasn't so good. The first Blackadder was basically a more talkative version of Mr Bean. It was the second series that really got the show going. The third series is perhaps the best of the lot, but there's not much in it.

Delivery is probably 50% of what nails good comedy. You can have the most hilarious script ever conceived by man, but if your cast don't deliver it well, it'll absolutely fall flat. If you take something like Bottom, which is essentially a combination of violent slapstick, toilet humour, and rampant verbal abuse, and give it to anyone other than Rik Mayall (RIP you mad bastard) and Ade Edmondson, it'd probably be deeply unfunny. Having the right people in the right roles is critical. (For proof of this, watch the episode "Hole", which features Richie and Eddie talking bollocks to each other while trapped on a Ferris wheel for the entire show.)

Hugh Laurie was quite an athlete in his younger days. He went to Cambridge mostly to row, and actually competed in the Boat Race. Then a bout of illness struck him meaning that he couldn't row. He was faced with the prospect of actually working at his degree instead, but decided that wasn't for him - so he joined the Footlights.

Black Adder was superb. Atkinson and his comic timing, way of speaking and cutting sarcasm as written by Ben Elton. Mr Bean was an utter waste of Atkinsons talents. I know some like him as Bean. But he is bumbling idiot. As Black Adder he is witty, sneaky, underhanded and sarcastic all at the same time. Its his way of speaking that makes the lines work. Having Bean gurgling in a silly voice now and then is an utter waste of Atkinson's vocal performances. Its just a shame they never made more. The first season is finding its feet, season 2 and 3 are utterly brilliant, not a bad episode in there, but the last season was a bit too depressing due to its setting in the first World War. It was still funny, but had an undercurrent of tragedy, sadness and loss, the stupidity of the waste of life, it was hard to get the same comic silliness out of that, than mucking about in Elizabethan England or with Prince George....

@@SueDenimDomDenim Are you being served was funny. It was very funny. It was of its time, but the one liners and characters are all superbly played and brilliantly written. The German week episode springs to mind. They whole staff has to dress up in German lederhosen etc. And Mr Lucas comes strolling on in the costume, looking vaguely ridiculous. And its clear he is not happy. And then John Inman come tottering in as Humphries. And his shorts are so short and tight he is walking on tiptoe... And Inman goes deadpan - " I cant think why...but my eyes are watering!!" And the audience is in hysterics, Lucas is laughing and you can see he means it as what Inman is doing is priceless, Lucas is laughing at Inman and Humphries at the same time. The whole show was full of moments like that. Yes its dated, yes certain characters would not be welcome by the up tight brigade today. But back then we could laugh at anything and send things up and people just had fun. The show got very high ratings and was a huge success for years. I would take Are You Being Served, or any of the Croft etc sitcoms over the what passes for comedy today...

@@SueDenimDomDenim Fair enough. It was sort of before my time as well. I became aware of it around 1977 when I was a tiny kid. I knew it was massive as everyone was talking about it. The stars of the show kept popping up on childrens tv and seaside special etc. Its worth watching even today. From a historical point of view it covers all the class structure battles that used to take place a lot in England. The pecking order and also a lot of what is going on in the 1970s is reflected in the show as well. Mr Grainger, the old chap on the mens wear counter is in the early season till the late 70s when he passed away. These are the best episodes with the original cast when it was at its peak. It started to tail off a bit after Trevor Banister who played Mr Lucas left. As a kid he was my joint hero along with Mr Humphries. They are two polar opposites. Lucas is a sex mad women chaser of the old school type. And Humphries is as gay as the hills and yet when the pair of them are together its hysterical. Yes its camp and un pc now and very dated but its still funny. Lucas is always winding up Mrs Slocombe and mocking her and she gets irate with him. Mollie Sugden is just brilliant in it, I used to love her and Wendy Richards as well...they are just brilliant at playing the characters. Its sad to me now, to think they are all dead and gone, like the cast of Dads Army etc as at times it still seems like yesterday. See if you can find some of the episodes. The one when they take over the toy department is brilliant as well....
