Do you think this comedy ? Really ? This is LIFE in the military. Scene: Battalion headquarters, Indiana National Guard, 1987. Situation: preparing for annual training in one month's time while enduring a prolonged drought. Fire danger assumed. Me (a 2nd Lt.): "Sir, what is the SOP (standard operating procedure) in the event of a fire ? S3-air (advises the battalion commander, a CPT, AGR or one of the permanent staff): "Run like hell."

I just realised that all three characters represent the three types of soldier in the Great War. Blackadder is the poor soul who was forced to join and just wants to avoid dying. George represents the public school boys who were raised under the "tally-ho and Bob's your uncle let us go to war!" doctrine, and Baldrick is the man who just signed up without knowing anything about the war.

Yes, there's a lot of that stereotyping across the whole series. Melchett and Darling fit into it too. Blackadder was actually a career soldier who'd joined up for service in the colonies, thinking he'd never see any major combat.

I swear a good 50% of the hilariousness of Blackadder comes down to Atkinson’s pronunciation. The use of ‘fungi’ here is particularly stupendous

Actually not sad at all. It was explained that Baldrick, although poorly educated, is the most intelligent one, across the entire series. Knowing this, he's seen in a whole new light.

Usually people assume Blackadder was killed on the charge of last episode. Actually, he was wounded, captured but released. He suffered much war trauma, that gave his speaking impairment as the known Mr. Bean.

There were anti-personnel mines in WW1 but they were rarely used on the Western Front because random shelling would have caused them to detonate, making laying them a waste of time and barbed wire was a much more effective and cheaper defence. They were used in Africa, by both the British and Germans.

British people invented many things throughout history. As anyone who has studied languages will tell you, the English language is not one of those things.

I am not positive but other than very late in the war they did not have mines in WW1, and even the ones late in the war were designed for tanks, and those mines definitely would not detonate if a person ran over them.

In late ww1, (if I remember correctly) mines were used for tanks only.. it was only in ww2 that the antipersonnel land mines were used to maim (not kill, because maiming will let the enemy expend more resources) enemies.. it became popular during ww2 when allies flight with the axis.. both uses tank and antipersonnel mines..
