Black Women, Peoples Temple and Jonestown

On November 18, 1978, more than 900 people died in a mass murder-suicide at the Peoples Temple Settlement in Jonestown, Guyana. Although the majority of the Jonestown massacre victims were black women, black women’s voices have been marginalized in Jonestown literature. Based on the 2015 novel by Sikivu Hutchinson, the short film White Nights, Black Paradise explores the relationships, moral dilemmas and politics of a multi-generational group of African American women who emigrated to Jonestown. The following is a discussion with Jonestown survivors and Peoples Temple family, Leslie Wagner Wilson, Jordan Vilchez, Yulanda Williams and Rebecca Moore.

A wolf in sheep's clothing was Jim Jones. R.I.P to all the victims who were led astray and eventually murdered by him and his band of henchmen.

Just like politicians. Tell them what they want to hear show them what they want to see. Make them promises that you cannot keep. Lot of those people were on drugs they were poor they were a dysfunctional. If you can just help 4 people, That's all you need to convince the rest of the people. It's sort of like the people you go to that read the cards.

Interesting video. Leslie Wilson’s son, I believe, is locked up for a long term bid. He was another victim of this event. Also Rebecca Moore has done a tremendous job keeping the story alive with her website.

Rebecca Moore is a MAJOR Jonestown apologist. She is doing everything she can to convince us all how good Peoples Temple and Jonestown were. Seems her biggest regret is that she wasn't sleeping with Jim Jones and mixing cyanide like her sisters

There are so many stories from people who were able to survive this mass execution, that there should multiple movies from the prospective of survivors. Rumor has it Leonardo DiCaprio and/or Joseph Gordon-Levitt were to play Jim Jones in a biopic.

A lot of people were deceived by Jim Jones including black women. Jim Jones started his cult as an evangelical church and then removed the bible from his organization and had everyone worshipping him as a god. That's part of the reason why many of his followers called him Father. I can understand why Yulanda Williams waited 15 years after the Jonestown massacre to tell people she was in a cult. Some people are ignorant enough to ridicule other people for being in a cult or growing up with cult teachings. I grew up with cult teachings and made the mistake of telling others in a church I went to besides the pastor. The pastor didn't ridicule me, but others did or said things to me at a later date that made me feel uncomfortable. Even if you were still a child at the time when you were still in the cult, some would make you feel as though it was your fault for being deceived. Like somehow you had a choice to leave even if you were forced to be in an organization or were to grow up with these teachings by a family member. In my case, even if I didn't grow up with cult teachings, I still would never tease someone who did. Cult leaders prey on the most vulnerable in society. It's probably the reason why many of the followers of People's Temple were minorities.
