Black Widow 'Dances' to My Touch | 5 DEFENSE MECHANISMS | KNOW #36

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

We already know about the potent venom. Do you know about a black widow's other defense mechanisms?
This beautiful northern black widow (Latrodectus variolus) will teach us about five different defense mechanisms ranging from her powerful venom to her ability to feign death (play dead) to her intimidating defensive posturing that looks like a nifty dance. Spiders have many clever ways of surviving!
Warning: Black widow venom can be deadly to humans. I am not advising anyone who lacks proper skill to handle these spiders.

Really enjoyed this one. She cooperated beautifully. It’s a rare gift to leisurely watch a black widow spider in action.

We have plenty around the house. The closest I ever got was pressing the garage door button only to look up and notice one about 3-4 inches from my finger.

Black widow to you: Thank you for calling me beautiful, even though we have never been properly introduced. Also, I like a human who is gentle (I will let the drama queen remark pass because you're so kind).

Why do black widow spiders randomly abandon their nests out of nowhere 😭

  • @KoawNature

Sorry Natalie...I can't give a good answer. It is common for spiders to abandon their webs. Though many consume their silk to repurpose it later. Black widows don't like creating webs in sunlight or too windy of spots--so sometimes after a build it isn't worth it.

@@KoawNature Thank you so much. On 2 separate occasions I recently discovered two unhatched black widow egg sacs on the concrete floor, detached from any webs. It appears as if the mother abandoned it. Would you have any understanding why a situation like this could have happened? Is it possible that the mother had been attacked and defeated by a predater and the predater felt compelled to get let go of her egg sac? Have you got any insight why something like this happened?

Hey Kelly. My best guess is that it's still a warning signal she's giving you. Animal behavior is always a tricky topic.
