actually this is a really good report. No over-dramatization and blaming of this beautiful species.

I use leather gloves for blacksmithing. Every time i go out to forge i slam my gloves on the ground and stomp the hell out of them before putting them on. Better safe than sorry

I was bitten by a black widow early Tuesday 10/12/2021at about 1 in the morning. I was watching tv and felt like something crawling on my arm. I brushed it downward not thinking much of it. I had on a t-shirt and undies. I was then done with tv and headed for bed. I had a burning sensation on my left buttock cheek and where my leg and butt cheek join. The burning increased and while I was in bed I though I have to see if there is anything where I was sitting. I turned on the light and sure enough there was a small female black widow dead right where I was sitting. Then the cramping started. My ovaries felt like they were in a vice grip and the burning sensation increased a lot. Then my breathing became labored and then uncontrollable body shaking. By the time I got to the ER (with the spider in a ziplock bag) the burning was severe, the ovarian cramping was unbelievably painful. My blood pressure went through the roof. A few hours later the Dr said she would call poison control and get back to me. They kept track of my blood pressure only during the stay in ER. Then the Dr said she doesn't know what a black widow looks like and that since symptoms were slowing that I could go home, take tylenol and put triple antibiotic salve on it. I couldn't see the 2 bites on my lower underwear line because of where they were. I also took a few Epsom Salt baths. The one on my left butt cheek I could see. They don't look like anything. Just a pink spot that totally belies the severity. Over the next couple of days I kept getting jolts of pain from the worst of the 3 bites that would make my leg kick up. It was so painful. Friday I went to my general Dr and he put me on an antibiotic meds, antiviral meds and sleep medication. Because he sees the small rash around the bite and said I think you have shingles. Today, Sunday the 17th, the bites are still painful but way less pain than any of the previous days. Don't get bitten by a Black widow. It IS painful. We have them all over the place every year as they are more prevalent in the spring, summer and fall, like all spiders. I have a lot of respect for them for sure. The sad thing is that I felt that because these bites weren't anything but little pink dots that neither of the Drs took me seriously. Because when I saw my Dr he saw the same rash around one of the bites and said it isn't a black widow bite you more than likely have shingles. Take these little girls seriously. You don't need to go our and kill them all over the place. Just stay safe. They pack a hello of a punch for sure.

A foot to the ground? Nope. That isn't true!!!! I work in the Texas hill country on a ranch, and we have a metal building here that has a bathroom & shower stall in it. I walked into the bathroom and almost straight into a black widow's web. She sat there high in the air next to a big ball of eggs. I stopped in time, however. If I hadn't seen her web, it would've hit my glasses and she most likely would've stung me!

That glove and shoe thing is classic black widow stuff. There are these stories all around the web and primarily stories of leavin shoes and gloves out and whammo. I've had a few close calls with black widows behind sht that I put my fingers on (ex: trash can handle once), but I always shake my shoes out, even indoors. One time, it was dark in the AM and I walked face first into a garden spider web and I quickly checked my collar and thought everything was good (that web nuisance was common without the spider in it). A mile down the street, a large garden spider did in fact crawl down my neck and I quickly reached forward to squash it and it bit me with all its might. I was confident it was just a garden spider and I was confirmed at work when I checked my shirt and it fell out. I could feel the tiniest of pinches when it bit me too. I had a fat welt about the size of a piece of bread on my upper back. It was thick, but absolutely painless. However, years later, I almost did the same thing and walk into a widow web. I saw the spider against the lighter background (it was dark/early). In that case, I knew it was a BW and it was. It was handing face high in the air from a long web going from the corner of my garage to the brick base of a pillar. That effer would've been literally dead smack in my face if I didn't see it in time.

Oo very interesting, I've walked through hundreds of webs here in California, never a widow I've seen yet, however when I was spraying out under my deck chairs there was a huge mother crawling out in each of the 6 chairs dark spots , creepy stuff. To help ease your mind checkout Jack’s World of Wildlife he let's a Black Widow crawl all over him for 10 minutes and even let's it bite him after significant effort, it helped ease my fear of having one on me at least, still fear the bite for obvious reasons.

I learned never to leave gloves outside when I was very young. A camel cricket had crawled inside before I put them on, that was a nasty experience 🤢🤮

Well that's where you're wrong. For people with comorbidities it can cause a deadly complication to arise that otherwise young and healthy people might not experience. So it's good that they watched her and knew what she was dealing with.
