Back in the '90's I had the great pleasureof seeing the Black Watch's Pipe and Drums performin San Diego while they were on an American tour. There's a local piping school, and its students, all teenagers or younger, opened the show. When they finished their portion of the show, the crowd politely cheered. But as they exited offstage, the cheer that went up from the Black Watch and the Guards for them was a single, deafening shout. I know it stirred my blood, must have made the kids' LIVES.

My Grandad was a member of the Black Watch. He served in India and in France, at the Somme. He ended up as batman to General Horne, and became Horne's gardener at Stirkoke House in Caithness.

Thank God for the Brits, especially the Scots. Best friends America ever had, and our mother land, whether we always admit it or not.

Many years ago, the man who taught me to play the pipes was named Allan Watters....otherwise known as Pipe-Major Watters who piped the Black Watch forward at El Alamein......a true gentleman.

(and lassies) all serving soldiers. working for and laying their lives on the line for the good of humankind. thank you for preserving what we have and for keeping things safe for the future. i have four kids and five grandkids (another one ready to appear any day now) ps. my youngest daughter served 2 years with the royal logistic corps (TA) in glasgow. ahm jist an old squaddie.

I'm proud to say that we Canadians have retained a wonderful tradition, as we do the same most of the time when we are doing similar exercises to our Scottish and British counterparts. God bless the Commonwealth.

I too played with The Black Watch and toured the USA in 1976, I'm still very proud to have served as an infantryman and piper with this great Regiment, voiceinyourdream if your brother played in 1963 with Big Ug Anderson (who taught me) was he one of the pipers chosen to play at Kennedys funeral? The Battle Honours of the 42nd are legendary even in the British Army. The Black Watch enjoy a legacy of glory and dread worthy of the the greatest Scottish Regiments. ALBA GU BRAITH.....

I was once at a rememberance day ceremony and there was a corporal of the Black Watch stood there in a kilt with this freezing wind blowing. He didn't even seem to notice.

Beautiful to watch. Timing is perfect. Look at how close those troops are together. Music to the eyes AND ears.

I LOVE IT!!!! I saw them on tour in the mid 1990's in San Diego and enjoyed their concert. I'm just sorry they don't tour around in America anymore.

my brother toured the USA with the pipes and drums in 1963, and my other brother in 1972, I was later in the 80s. With regards to the guy that doesnt know about the 42? it stands for 42nd regiment of foot.

All kidding aside; As a Yank I'm proud to have fellows like this as allies. locheelad2,..Most of the Scots who settled in the USA (originally) settled in Virgina and the Carolinas (N & S.) as well as in parts of New Jersey. The Carolinas even have a tartan that was worn by either King Charles I or II...The design is registered in Scotland as the official state tartan. In New Jersey , Princeton University (an 'Ivy League' college). was originally a Prebsyterian Seminary.

I'm American, and watching this video gives me goosebumps. Nothing in the US military can compare to the history and tradition of the Scottish, British, and Irish military units.

I am an American. My father was born in Dublin Ireland. My Mother was born in County Roscommon. That is also in Ireland. I am an American of Irish descent. I have friends whose parents were born in Scotland

alovejokes..... I am glad that you have researched your family and know of your tartans and crest. :-) No, I don't have a family tartan. My family is descended from (mostly) English stock. They've been in the US since 1620 If I have any Scots blood; it's from the Lowlands or Border areas. My ancestors who attended the Presbyterian Seminary may not have been of Scots lineage. Back then, most Americans attended the nearest church to their home, due to distances between towns -B.B..

I can feel the pride coming from this video. Truly an awesome Regiment.

The pipes weren't played into battle throughout the second world war as the MOD banned the practise due to the fear of high casualties !!, however famously Lord Lovat took his piper with him on D Day and he played on the beaches of Normandy and throughout the North Western Europe campaign. His name was Bill Millin.

To the guy who said pipes weren't played in battle in WW2, they were. I met a man once who played the line at El Alamein, I think i nthe Kidney Ridge attack. He said it was the most frightening theing he'd eve been through. Was with the Gordons. Semper fi'!

Nicely done on the march-past shots. The troops this video may be in modern desert camouflage rather than Highland-style dress blacks, but either way I can picture them packing Rifles L1A1 en route to a ship bound for an undisclosed location in the Middle East---the Brits have interests under threat in that area.

Most Scots people have immense pride in their local regiment as it put a relativley small area on the world stage. Just like these guys did for the Dundee, Perthshire and Angus area.

"The Ladies From Hell" is what the Germans called them in WW1! My Uncle was in the 5th Battalion and was wounded and captured at Caen after D-Day. My Father was a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion and was in Osnabruck on the North German plain when the Germans surrendered to Montgomery and WWII in Europe ended.

@Silver1Sprg , The band of the Irish Guards and the pipe band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland (Argyll Highlanders) are currently touring the USA. They will be in California in March and will be at the Balboa Theatre, San Diego, on March 7. Why not go see them there?

seeing British units march is so much more exciting than watching an American regiment parade. it's the bagpipes i think
