They were originally 5 white guys from Scotland. When a friend of theirs came to one of their first gigs, he said, "You have too much funk for the average white man." They liked it, so they called themselves the Average White Band. Check out these two songs from their Person to Person live album: Cut the Cake, Cloudy. Two really great live songs!! Cut the Cake live version is funky cool, and Cloudy is a soulful ballad where Hamish hits some awesome high notes!!

The Average White Band (AWB) is a soul, funk & R&B band originally started in 1972 from Scotland & they continue to tour today (2021) with 2 original band members remaining in the group...They are not a one hit wonder either...They were the 1st "white" group to ever play "Live" on Soul Train because they're so soulful & funky!!! Here is the Link to a more updated version to this song "A Love Of Your Own" - In Concert where they performed it at The House Of Blues in Los Angeles, California; there they took this song to another level and the video quality is better too: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hK6Ml6SKp9PSfto.html Here are some more of their hits: "Pick Up The Pieces," "Cut The Cake," "Person To Person," "School Boy Crush," "Cloudy," "Work To Do," "Queen Of My Soul," "I'm The One" and "If I Ever Lose This Heaven." Sincerely, CR SoundDoctor

I always liked them, but I had a gf in high school who would absolutely not shut up about Hamish Stuart. Hey, I loved his voice, too.....and his songwriting, his musicianship, etc, but I'm only just discovering what a gorgeous man he is. "Cut the Cake", "Pick up the Pieces"; anything from the album Feel No Fret, particularly "Atlantic Avenue" or "When Will You Be Mine?"..actually, you can't go wrong with AWB.

Hey RT 2.0, Without seeing them, most people have thought that they were a Black group because of how soulful they sound. You mentioned being glad to see them live," a lot of people have reacted to this band's name in a similar way. Please keep in mind that their name was never meant to have any negative racial connotations, as I mentioned in my previous comments, they started in the early 70's back in Scotland and their name was birthed from a quirky joke, as they had a friend that traveled a lot to different places around the world, upon his return from his journeys he would make statements like: "the weather there was either too hot or too cold for the "average white man." They heard things like that so many times from this guy, that they thought to themselves, hey let's call ourselves the "Average White Band!!!" I read somewhere in another comment that makes great sense about the marketing of their name: "under-promise" but "over-deliver!!!" And wow, do these guys deliver the soul & the funk!!!

So happy to see these guys getting recognized and appreciated for how great they were. Funny thing is black people and hip hop fans have been listening to them for years but just didn't know it. I first became a fan way back in the 90's trying to DJ experiment with "Pick up the Pieces" because I have always thought that was one of the funkiest songs ever recorded. When I finally found the record in a record store and saw who they were, I was of course surprised that almost all of them were white, only mildly tho. However, I was SHOCKED to find out they were from Scotland! 🤯. Anyways, they are some bad bad boys and the fact the fact that they are not in the Rock and Roll HOF is ridiculous and tragic.

The studio version is infinitely better. Gets right to the song. The sax intro meanders too long and then the song’s outro, unlike the studio version where Hamish Stuart does some of his best-ever singing, gets short-shrift. The group normally improved or advanced their songs. Not this time.
