@16:45 The Roots were able to be successful within their genre because there was a Neo-Soul, pro-blk consciousness movement during the time they rose up (mid to late 90s to mid-2000s). They weren't the only ones...Angie Stone, India Arie, Kindred and the Family Soul, Erykah Badu, Common, Dionne Farris, Jill Scott, Digable Planets, etc. Envy is talking like they were alone and started it it by themselves.

  • @jman1562001

It's funny because Questlove quarterbacked that move. He said in an interview if the Roots ain't click up and create a movement they would fall by the wayside like most rap groups from the 90s. Their jam sessions were instrumental in that neo soul revival with a lot of work being done with D'Angelo and then Erica, Bilal, Jill Scott, Common, etc. A young Scott Scortch ran with them too.

They were all pretty much against that term “neo-soul” as it has been said several times by every single one of them. What they did was their own movement. The Soulquarian movement if you will. It was record labels that needed to slap that neo-soul label. Artists completely unconnected to the Soulquarians that truly defined so-called neo-soul were the likes of Zhane, Musiq Soulchild, Maxwell, Eric Benet, Groove Theory, and you got the precursors in Mint Condition and The Tony’s.

So strange they are talking about showing ‘grace’ to kids….KIDS! Kids do crazy wild stuff, especially when they are unsupervised. But I guess the hood is so used to kids getting punished for mistakes made as kids. I respect what he's saying but children should not be held accountable for adults not being there and for doing dumb shit. I'm glad his mum was nurturing because there are some parents who would break their child's spirit when they should actually be showing them love, acceptance and grace.

Maybe he talking about financially but in the Philly hip hop heads community The Roots emcees where well respected. Especially the beginning years when Malik B (rahimuhullah) was his right hand and Dice Raw and Bahamadia was running with them. Plus Rahzel was on the beatbox they were official with the heads. Maybe because New York was kinda slow on things that ain't New York or North Jersey back then. Even when I was in ATL for a couple years the "heads" was ridin with The Roots. Probably the same in other cities too but the support from the heads don't always reflect the pockets though unfortunately.
