I thought Natalie did a great job of acting and dancing, but the hard stuff was done by Sarah Lane, a professional ballet dancer. She didn't get a lot of credit for the things she did in the movie. They want to make you think Natalie did a lot of the hard stuff but you can see in this video that the fluid dancing, fouettes & pirouettes were performed by Sarah and probably the footwork scenes as well. Natalie would have won the Oscar on her acting alone. Natalie trained in ballet only 1 1/2 years for her role and there are things that takes a professional dancer years & years to learn and get perfect.

This movie is one of my all time favorite movies. It’s so bizarre and leaves me with so many questions but that’s what I love about it.
The out of this world effort of Natalie for this character…
This movie was great, it really taught me how to sort of take advantage of my perfection habit instead of it ruining me. Nina never could be great at first, I mean yeah she had great form and was one of the top dancers in the movie but at the beginning the girl teacher tells her to relax. Once Nina finally just let go of everything and just let her body take over she put on the best performance of all time. I think a lot of us are yet to discover our “black swan” but we have to let go of ourselves to reach another level of greatness, don’t go crazy though haha, but work your tail off!

Sarah Lane is a beautiful dancer. She did most of the dancing on this film. Natalie wore pointe shoes, cried a lot and moved her shoulders. One year of practice to do that kind of dancing is preposterous!!!! Give the applause to the actual dancer! Natalie is an actor. She is NOT a dancer. It really minimizes the years of training that real ballerinas put forth.

18:50 This shot reflects another thing that I found quite unsettling about the film's visual style - not just the use of mirrors and reflections, but the mazelike spaces of the studio, and the somehow slightly claustrophobic spaces Nina existed in? A thematic reflection of her struggle to break free of inhibition and her nother's smothering I guess.
That cgi at the end was very well done. Helped the story in a big way...integrated really well.

I could watch this over and over and never get bored. Masterpiece!
I wish behind the scenes stuff wouldn't be so curated and cut down. They should just release the raw interviews and footage in long form. That's what people watching bts are trying to see.
Sarah Lane did a fantastic job and I think it’s completely justified that she was so outspoken about the dancing. Natalie Portman obviously worked very hard at the dancing and her acting performance is phenomenal, no question. But she is not a dancer and it is obvious Sarah did the majority of the dancing. They really did Sarah dirty by not crediting her properly. I feel it was likely a marketing move to make people believe Natalie trained so hard she could dance at a professional level. Like that would be so impressive if it were possible & I can see why they ran with that narrative. Doesn’t make it right, though.

Girl you are on point with this! I didnt know about Sarah until recently, and it is wild how they claimed brazenly that "Natalie portman trained for a year," when in reality, Sarah was the true star of the dance aspect.
@vero8pictures958

My thoughts exactly, I've never heard Natalie thank or even mention Sarah Lane for her contribution to the film. It's as if Natalie wants us to assume she did the dancing in the movie. It was only after the Academy Awards that it became known that Sarah did the majority of the ballet performances.
@linchen008
Жыл бұрын
Really? I can't understand that anybody could believe you could dance like that, on a professional level only after a training of about a year. And it is a little bit shady and unfair that Natalie Portman made us believe in the interview that she did the dancing. What a difference to Deborah Kerr and Marnie Blixen! The producers put on an contract that Marnie wasn't allowed to talk about over dubbing Deborah in "The King and I". Deborah Kerr was the one who lifted the secret. She said, that Marnie was not allowed to talk about but herself wasn't and she could tell. That's the respect for the art and work from one professional to the other.
Sarah Lane, you did marvellous job with those beautiful moves!
Still think this movie shouldve won the Oscar for best picture that year I'm sorry but king's speech wasn't on the same level as this. Not even close. Def one of the best films ever made, and Natalie's performance is out of this world. Yes Sarah Lane did a fantastic job with the choreography and no one is taking that away from her (she was actually interviewed in a couple pieces for television at the time the movie came out), but my God, that doesn't take away the incredible magnificent performance Natalie put together for this film.
@linchen008

Sure, Natalie is a great actress, but at least they could give Sarah Lane the credit for her work. It's a great film because you don't realize at all that the character of Nina is a compound of two persons: an actress and a dancer. It would not have worked without this great dance scenes.
This film is truly a masterpiece of visual and auditory seduction: the intriguing story, the elegant visuals, the stylized movement of the dance, the decadent musical score, equal parts unease/near-madness and rhapsodic classical beauty, the gorgeous female leads, the costumes, the photography and set design, the special effects + the amazing Barbara Hershey. It does not get any better than this. A rare treat indeed.
This movie is such a great horror movie, but not the way one might expect. We get to see a person with mental disorders descend into madness and mania, and we know there is no happy ending. The horror we see is from Ninas perspective and it is terrifying, we see monsters, doppelgangers and we, as her, do not know what is real. Well it IS real to her, and one can only wonder how people with schizophrenia cope sometimes, when you have to question your own mind all the time. Brilliant movie! One of my favs!
Thank you for putting this together! I have been obssesed with this movie lately, and I loved to watch how they shot the scenes, the special FX, and to have all the extra input of the project. I've enjoyed it a lot! ♥

I just watched this film for the first time last evening, I was left speechless!!!! difficult to watch at times, a masterpiece!! WOW
The movie is great and Natalie Portman certainly did an extraordinary job, but, as a former ballet dancer, I have some conflict with it. First, I think the production, the director, and Ms. Portman were really unfair by not giving Sarah Lane, a principal with the ABT by the time the movie was made, the recognition she deserved. The movie would not have the same impact without Sarah's work, and it would be impossible for Natalie Portman, or any human being whatsoever, to reach the level of a professional ballet dancer in six months or one year, no matter how hard she trained. Second, Black Swan is broadly seen as a movie about dance, but it is not. The movie does not portray how the world of ballet really is. Yes, professional dance companies are very competitive places, however, there is an order and a structure that is not portrayed in the movie, and the reason why is that Black Swan is not a movie about how dance companies work. The story could not happen exactly like that in a real dance company for several reasons, and at the same time it could have been adapted into other contexts, such as a law firm, a scientific laboratory, an orchestra, a theatre company, etc., and it would be just as great because the topic of the movie is not ballet but the obsession for perfectionism and how that can lead to a mental breakdown.
@linchen008

Thanks you pointed that out and tell us about the world of ballet and how it works. And I am absolutely on your side. I've never seen it as a movie about ballet. To me it was about the descending of a young woman into madness.

It is not a documentary, it’s a fictional piece of work. It has no intention to show “the real world of ballet”. It’s a movie about an artist looking for perfection, in fact it was about an actress first, they changed to a dancer later.

This was a terribly boring movie. The story was weird and uninteresting. Russian ballet is by far a much better technique.
you really milk the word masterpiece. huh
To be honest, I find Natalie Portman’s acting to be pretty one-dimensional and uninteresting. I think she won an Oscar because the public believed she ‘learned ballet’ in a few months (takes decades). The filmmakers actually lied and credited her with the main dancing sequences when in fact they were performed by Sarah Lane. Pretty despicable. Is this movie entertaining? Hell yes. Cheesy and exploitative? Absolutely? A masterpiece? Hard NO.
