Ray, it's one of my greatest pleasures, teaching the classes. We offer 3 classes throughout the year, plus 2-day "apprenticeships" that I do during the May thru October season at Sauder Village.

I have a 1 liter whiskey barrel, and from time to time its dries out enough to leak, and now we're talking about leaking my whiskey! I know whiskey is a water absorbent, and so even half full the little barrel will leak after a while. Is there a way to stop this so I don't lose anymore of my drinking alky?

The best way to keep a cask from leaking is to simply keeping it full. The liquid causes the wood to swell/seal. When its not in use, it needs to be soaked from time to time to keep it full. The other option would be to melt parafin wax and coat the inside of the cask. It has a higher melting point than beeswax.

Doesn't sound as if the lady is using a very sharp tool for grooving. how does somebody actually sharpening that thing?

Seth, the croze is actually very sharp. We have to sharpen them with a small rasp. The next class, I will try to take a close up picture of the teeth of the croze. We make our own blades and design them to cut either way, to the right or the left. I sharpen our tools on a daily basis.

She needs to back up her chair so she has a better mechanical advantage when she pulls toward her. Being too close does not allow for full movement. Notice in the next shot the guy is sitting further back :)
