BLACK STROKE Documentary | Netflix
Ойын-сауық
According to the latest figures from Sport England, 87% of Black adults in the UK do not swim. We follow the stories of three people from different walks of life breaking racial stereotypes to learn to swim for the first time. Each individual with their own personal goal, proving it’s never too late to learn. With the support of their coaches and community we will follow their journey to become competent swimmers, touching upon the racial history that has created barriers to entry for black people and what has hindered them learning before now. Will they sink or swim, the choice is theirs.

What a beautiful documentary, this deserves to be a full length film/documentary. There is so much more to explore here. Well done to the cast and crew, you lot smashed it!❤
This documentary is a wonderful watch and way too short. I came across this after listening to Richie Brave on 1Xtra Radio this evening, who did his whole show on unpicking why it is that British Black people don't swim. I don't swim at present, not because I can't but because the only access I'd have to water are the public swimming pools and the chlorine for my hair and skin isn't kind. But I will say that after watching this doc and knowing that there are now swim caps specifically designed for black hair, swimming is something I am now considering. Thank you to the crew of Black Stroke and the three brave souls featured. You've all done a wonderful thing.
I’m here after hearing about it in Three Shots. Great documentary surrounding a topic that doesn’t really get discussed ❤
SO proud of these 3 people - I started swimming before I could walk, so I've taken it for granted, my Dad used to call me his little fish - I hope this video is shown in schools and everywhere possible to educate and inspire 🚀
IT’S GIVING SUCCESS Love this, and I can’t wait for more of our community to learn how to swim because so many don’t know how. It’s such an important life skill and a great way to experience the world. Great documentary, ready for more 🙇🏾♀️
This film is nothing short of a triumph. A beautiful celebration of inspiring black stories. It’s made my morning watching this.

There’s nothing we cannot do!!! Great doc and beautiful success stories. Thank you for inspiring us. ✌🏾💜
Came to watch after listening to Miss Smart on 3Shots of tequila. This was amazing. I can fully relate to being Caribbean and going back without being able to swim!
I love this, very relatable. Well done to all involved
amazing and beautiful film
Wow I feel truly moved and inspired by this documentary, for the first time in my life I feel wholly seen.
Amazing documentary! Thank you 3shots for the recommendation!
A beautiful piece ❤️❤️❤️
Such an important topic too many of us fear the water I myself used to have that mindset until I turned 35 and learned to overcome this fear. If nothing else I hope this inspires everyone who thinks they can’t swim to learn no matter your age trust me once you get over your fear of the water you do have such a strong sense of victory about what you over came
It’s giving winning mentality
❤ Love this - being able to swim is a human right (I’m part of the Outdoor Swimming Society and will share).
Amazing!! x
Adult-learn to swim that also deals with anxieties in and out the water. So it’s challenging and times but love it! Also have 55” of locs covered by my Soul Cap! 💪🏽🧜🏽♀️✊🏽🤌🏽❤️
Well done! Keep doing the work!
Thank you for this. Inspirational and uplifting. I hope this inspires many non-swimmers to think about learning how to swim and to begin to understand what a wonderful sport and pastime they are depriving themselves of, not to mention the safety aspect. Also grateful that unlike many other videos on the topic, this video does not focus on the racism, because I believe it is pretty evident that, existing racism aside, racism for most non-swimmers in today's day and age is not the primary reason they are not learning how to swim. I also understand how big a role existing fears and also embarrassment about not knowing how to swim can play and that it can keep someone from learning how to. May these uplifting stories help others to find the courage. Nike was right on this one: Just do it!
This was beautiful 🦋

An excellent film, poignant, which truly resonates with so many of us. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️🙏🏽 Question: is that someone being dragged out of water the moment before the 'bleach pouring' archive footage transitions from black and white to the colour footage? 😠😢
This has motivated me to learn how to swim despite having sickle cell! Amazing ❤
