► LYRICS
Accept the fact that you're second rate life is easy for you
It's all served up on a gold plated plate
And we don't even have to talk to you
Your face is normal that's the way you're bred
And that's the way you're going to stay
Your head is firmly nailed to your TV channel
But someone else's finger's on the control panel
What you gonna be brother - Zero the hero
Don't you want to be brother - Zero the hero
When you gonna be brother - Zero the hero
Impossibility impissibolity mother really a hero
You sit there watch it all burn down
It's easy and breezy for you
You play your life to a different sound
No edge no edge you got no knife have you
Your life is a six lane highway to nowhere
You're going so fast you're never ever gonna get down there
Where the heroes sit by the river
With a magic in their music as they eat raw liver
You stand there captain we all look
You really are mediocre
You are the champion in the Acme form book
But I think you're just a joker
Your freedom life ain't so much of a pity
But the luv-a-duckin' way you're walkin' around
The city with your balls and your head full of nothing
It's easy for you sucker but you really need stuffing

I never understood the mindset behind this solo. It doesn't sound major (after all this is Sabbath) nor a regular minor scale. It's fucking weird. This is not a scale I have played because if I had I would notice its sonority and it would not sound strange. This must be some sort of post modern mindset, and yes, it does sound evil. Like, he starts the solo with a bend. Ok, this is very common. Like, most solos start with a bend. Nothing strange so far, but the notes that he bends to sound strange, sounds out of place, but sounds cool. It's like the guitar is screaming in pain. Yes, it makes a lot of sense with what you have said about the guitar begging for mercy lol I think he's playing "bad" notes on purpose to give this evil vibe. The notes doesn't sound pretty, sounds evil and mean, the intervals he's playing are hellish. I don't know the exact notes because I never tried playing this solo, but I think he used a lot of minor intervals and like tritones.

I'm a 54 y.o. die hard Sabbath fan. Born Again is for me among their three best albums, full of a surreal, eerie and dark atmosphere that equates the spirit of SBS and Sabotage. It's a real pity the Gillan incarnation of the band didn't have the chance of further development. I have felt that maybe some echoes of it are in The Devil You Know, as if the trend had been cut off for more than 20 years and had resurfaced in an ailing, dispirited Ronnie Dio.

The problem was that after that initial success, Ian left and people forgot about it. Also, it was just too heavy for radio. Even metal stations refrained from playing it much as it didn't fit in with the pop metal and hair metal of the day.

Funny, but I also liked listening to this particular song almost ignoring the rest of the album when I was a child. The wicked and mystic synths and a wonderful solo gave me creeps then. And once I got extremely scared when listening to this track I saw a flying winged shadow on the periphery of my sight. When I turned my head, there was nothing there and (if my memory doesn't deceive me) right after that I heard a loud knock at my door. Don't know what that was.

I had a dream back then, with this song in it, but it sounded even heavier (if you can imagine such a thing) everything was RED, the color of the demon baby on the cover. I woke up with my fingers in a half-way pulled out electric plug and realized that I was getting shocked. Two weeks later, I woke up in the middle of the night and the cover of the album was flashing on my tv. I thought that I'd gone to Hell. It turned out that the station that I had on when I fell asleep had the 700 Club on in the middle of the night and they were doing an expose on the evils of the album.

Saw this tour in the 3rd row, dead center, in the Worcester Centrum, utterly kicked butt. Gillian was great for this material and did a respectful job with their classic songs. Just a great show and a young Bon Jovi opened the show with a surprisingly good opening set before anyone knew who they were. Sabbath rules no matter who is singing, all eras of Sabbath's are worth a listen as every single one of them has Tony Iommi on jt! 🎸

I have a bootleg CD of that show, and his take on “Black Sabbath” is probably my favorite version of the song. He doesn’t get enough credit. He did a really great job with them.

This whole album is a masterpiece and they should make it into a theatrical on stage show I’m not kidding it’s like a story. Ian Gillian has such a special talent as for the rest of the band . I’m great full that he was able to do this work with Black Sabbath not only did he kill it with deep purple his talent isn’t sequester to just that band but his potential to be super versatile and powerful
