Black Sabbath Albums Ranked

It's the holiday season so here's a nice fun video talking about the grandfathers of metal: Black Sabbath. From the dumpster fire of Seventh Star, through to the 70s classics, this video covers all 19 studio albums in the general Lines In Wax style.
I haven't done a Black Sabbath complete discography retrospective because one already exists and it's absolutely brilliant:

I think that "The Devil you Know" should be ranked. Despite of the bands name, is a more classic line-up than Martin's or Gillan era. And for sure more than Seventh Star. And better album than "13" (a souless-shity sound-generic abomination)

Never Day Die is probsbly top 10 lol. The song writing is often goofy but the production is excellent. It's so vivid, colourful and rich. The Dio albums are all above it but I'd take it over Technical Ecstasy which sounds limp sonically.

I was of two minds when watching this video. On the one hand, I was surprised to see the Dio albums so low because those albums changed my life. (To each their own.) On the other, I was excited to see Born Again placed so high because it is the hidden gem of the catalog. 20. Eternal Idol 19 . Headless Cross 18. Forbidden 17. Seventh Star 16. Tyr 15. After the train wrecks Never Say Die and Technical Ecstasy, Ozzy being fired needed to be done. The first 2 Dio Sabbath albums put new life into a dead band, without them we would not still be talking about Black Sabbath today. The fact that we got Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman makes his firing one of the best member changes any band has ever made.

Since others have added their ranking, here we go. First a few small notables: I'm 68 and first heard the thunder and the bell at 14 and never looked back. Sabbath is my band and always will be. So to me, the Ozzy years are sacred (with some exceptions): 20. Forbidden - just doesn't work for me, pieced together by band members 19. Seventh Star - no balls, a few decent tunes, Glenn's vocals are great 18. Never Say Die - a handful of decent songs doesn't save the album - still trying 17. Tyr - my first Tony Martin album, better to come 16. Cross Purposes - better songs 15. Headless Cross - feels like they're trying to be evil and then the ballad 14. The Devil You Know - Like it, but I can't get through it in one listening 13. The Shining - my personal favourite Tony Martin era album 12. Black Sabbath - classic but never could appreciate the long jam 11. 13 - wanted to REALLY like this but I think Rick Rubin is partly to blame for the final result 10. Technical Ecstacy - again, a few songs just don't work for me 9. Dehumanizer - has grown on me over the years, heavy! 8. Heaven an Hell - saved Sabbath, a classic 7. Mob Rules - to me, slightly better than H&H with improved production 6. Born Again - love this album, was the Deep Purple reunion worth Gillan leaving? 5. Paranoid - played this to death 4. Master of Reality - so heavy 3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - great mix of songs with a bit of prog 2. Sabotage - I like the anger in the songs 1. Vol.4 - has always been my #1 even though I don't need to hear Snowblind again Thanks.

    20. Headless Cross(those awful 80's synths kill it for me. Also, for a supposedly'dark' record, I feel a happy vibe from a couple of the tunes. Subtract those two tracks and dim those synths....I'd feel totally different). 19. Seventh Star(it's not bad, it just feels the least like sabbath). 18. Forbidden(not their best, but not nearly as bad as its reputation) - 17. Cross Purposes(having Geezer present makes a difference) 16. The Devil You Know(didn't grab me immediately, it's a grower that kept getting better with each listen) 15. Never Say Die(NOT heavy, nor metal, but it's adventurous, 'outta the box' Sab.) 14. TYR(Annu Mundi 🔥) 13. 13(h I view this as a 16 song project, rather than just the 8-10). 12. Heaven & Hell(The title track is my favorite DioSab tune). 11. The Eternal Idol(very good album, overlook 10. Born Again(Ian and Tony sound phenomenal together) 9. Mob Rules 8. TekEx (being lesser than 1-6 doesn't mean it sucks) 7. Dehumanizer(my fav DioSab) 6. Sabotage 5. SBS -5&6 neck and neck, a hair less than 1-4 4. Black Sabbath 3. MoR 2. Paranoid 1. Vol4

Cozy started on the Dehumanizer demos, so he remained after Tyr. He was outed after a horse fell on him and broke his pelvis. Vinny joined to keep Dio happy, after Ronnie's choice of his then drummer in the Dio band, Simon Wright was vetoed by Tony and Geezer. Tony Martin was also involved due to issues with Ronnie, but ultimately the album came out with the Mob Rules line up.

“Changes” is one of the worst songs of all time. Out of the scores of my favourite albums, it’s the only track on any of those albums I HAVE to skip, or it just ruins the whole experience of listening to the album. The cover version of “Supernaut” by 1000 Homo DJs is great. It is probably actually better than the original. Worth checking out if you’ve not heard it.
