    AFAIK nobody makes one but I want a 50 cal black powder revolver that uses 209 primers instead of percussion caps. That way I can use the same ammo and accessories that I already have for my modern style muzzle loading rifle. I'll probably have to make it myself. 🤔🤓🍻

    For those who have never fired a cap and ball revolver, its a good kit. Shows what you need to get if you really get into black powder. Also if ball and cap is not what you expected, you're not out a lot for items you wont use again. A good kit for the newbie shooter.

    I had a lot of fun at age 19 with a pack just like this! Maybe it was the same, it came with the 1851 Navy as well. It got me into shooting! It was shortly after that I bought my first rifle and shotgun. Then later an actual handgun on my 21st birthday!

One of the things that has stopped me from getting into black powder shooting is all the other *STUFF* you have to get just to use the firearm for the first shot. Like you said here, even with this starter kit there is more *STUFF* you need to use it.

    Totally agree....and getting a 1851 Navy in 36 Cal. Is much better starter gun for kids !!! That's what my Dad got me in 1988 ish I was 5 or 6 when I got my first pistol! Still have it and use it off and on ... But of course the Wilson Combat 1911 CQB is my everyday carry lol.... The 1851 Navy is truly a great Firearms fundamental starter pistol and introduction and understanding of weapons mechanics. History, Wisdom and Knowledge is the true art of Firearms Safety and Employment!!! It's what established Our Constitutional Republic!!!!

    I prefer steel frame guns but the brass frame guns based on the 1851 frame look really nice, especially once the brass gets a patina to it. They make awesome display guns and fine shooters provided you don't try and hot rod them on every shot.

    the best way to get that brass look on steel, is to heat and then brush with a wire brass wheel, it "stains" the steel a brassy yellow color and could legit be mistaken for brass if done correctly. figure i would drop that bit just in case you end up with a steel frame and would like that brass look.

    This same kit was how I got started years ago. The gun was a lot of fun and funny enough I still have that nipple wrench. Everything else got replaced. It seemed to fit the bill at the time. Tracking down the individual components used to be tougher ten years ago. Not as many internet providers and not as many big box outdoor stores. At that time, it was impossible to get No. 10 caps and I had to use No. 11s, even though it was unwise. There was a time for something like this, but now ain't that time.

    My friend bought this kit and uses it frequently when we go shooting up in the mountains. It's fun to learn on. Think of it as a gateway drug. It's cheap and easy to get you started. If you don't get addicted you just use it occasionally for fun. If you do, you quickly expand to more advanced black powder muzzle loaders.

    This kit is great, it’s a decent revolver and tools to learn on, mine looks pretty rough now after 2 years, got scratches dents and it’s been through ups and downs but it still works. It’s kinda like your first car, you learn with it, if it gets beat up then oh well it’s your first one so no shame. I’ve added two new bp revolvers to my collection since a Walker and a 49 pocket, once I learned from the mistakes of the beater I was prepared to get some more expensive Ubertis to enjoy without a worry of damaging them. I think you make great content but I really think you should’ve looked at the kit in the perspective of someone that wants a simple kit that has the necessities like I did when I started and most other people that bought the kit. And on a side note, I still use all the accessories in the kit no need to get bigger better ones these ones work just fine.

    Elmer Keith wrote about the 1851 Navy .36 in his Sixguns book of the 1950's. He started as a kid in the early 1900's and had several living Civil War veterans ( 1 Union, 1 Confederate) as his mentors. The .36 is not just for those new to black powder its also a top choice in match shooting events. Historically the 1851 Navy .36 was the most widely used pistol from the 1850's thru to the early 1870's. Brass frame revolvers look really good once they have aged a bit and the brass has dulled. They will last many years if you take care of them and avoid shooting heavier loads but steel frame is the way to go.

    Welcome back Amigo! Okay, I agree with you on the purchase of this kit. However, ya gotta start somewhere. Looks like you basically get to fire off two cylinders. By then, you're hooked and you're back at the store buying more of what you need. Seemed to work that way for me. Back when I was young and broke, I had to buy my stuff piece by piece. So I did it like you were describing. I started out with a used revolver, then I bought a kit gun and then I just kept on from there. Now that I'm an older middle aged man, I own a dozen of these bad boys and I never seem to want to stop. Too much fun. Hey, those brassy guns shoot pretty well. I load them normal. I don't think I could wear one out in my lifetime. Just thinking.

    Brass frame, Colt's week open top design. This type is the one kit, except for historical reenactors beginners should avoid. The Remington New Army (often incorrectly called the model of 1858) is a strong all steel frame design that will give years of excellent service to any beginning, or seasoned shooter.

    I agree with madog. It's better to start with a .36 not really because the .44 is necessarily more intimidating, but because it's a little wasteful on powder. A pound of powder should last a third longer or better through a .36 than a .44, unless you insist on jamming 27 grain hunting load every time instead of a more reasonable 12-15 grain target/plinking load. The fastest way to lose new cap'n'ball shooters is to make them spend more and therefore shoot less. Nice to see you back, Dustin.

    I dont understand why the 36 costs MORE than the 44 One would think it should cost LESS, take less time, and cheaper on tooling, to drill smaller holes. I wanted the 36, but I didnt want it bad enough to pay a 20-25% premium for the privilege of 36 over 44. (oh, and the clearance cut for the 44cylinder too.. why does it cost more to NOT make that extra cut??)

    @@rwbimbie5854 The .36 is very popular with living history crowd and match shooters, but with the average Joe shooter the .44 outsells the .36 by huge margins. That was the answer I got some years ago from a Pietta rep at a show I attended. The 1851 brass frame .44 was their #1 seller at the time.

  • @eljuano28

    @eljuano28

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@rwbimbie5854 , sorry I didn't get a notice that you had commented. I'm not sure the machineries costs have anything to do with the actual retail costs. Volume is a greater factor and as our friend, Karl T noted, Pietta sells more of the .44cal version. There's nothing wrong with it if you feel initial cost is more important than running cost, but if you're patient, .36cals go on sale from time to time. I paid more for one of mine because I wanted something somewhat unusual and had the cash in hand when it came available, but my first one I picked up for a song by watching for good sales. It used to be you could pick up a Pietta for about a hundred bucks, but unless you find a good used one, those days are kind of over. Figure for a very basic .36 cal, $150 if you're very patient and $200 if you're less so and between $250 and $300 if you just have to have it now without shopping around. I bought my "pretty" one for $270, (gun only,) and my plain jane for $130-ish, (gun only.) At the time, those were comparable in price or less than the .44s I saw. Just gotta shop.

When i bougjt my first 1858, i had no idea what i needed😂 With the blister pack, any noob cam buy powder, caps, and go to the range. After a couple shoots, I knew exactly what i wanted or needed to get. I do agree the blister pack is a waste for an experienced black powder shooter.

  • @karlt8233

    @karlt8233

    The kit has a powder measure, in the kit shown its in the upper right. It has a slider bar with measurements on it in grain volume. If you have a brass frame gun in .36 cal 15-20gr and for brass frame .44 20-25gr. This will not beat the gun up and pretty close to the historical loads. The average Civil War era paper cartridge .36 loads was 18gr and .44 was 28gr of black powder. If you use Triple Seven reduce your loads by 15% because T7 is stronger and more powerful than black powder or Pyrodex. Edit to add: black powder and black powder substitutes like Pyrodex, Triple Seven are always measured by volume. Never Never by weight.

    @@SanitysVoid Once you set the measure to your desired charge you fill the measure from the powder flask. Level with top of measure. Then add that to a cylinder. Insert felt wad over powder, then ball. Seat the ball fully using the loading lever. Do the same steps for the next chamber. Continue until all are loaded. Last step is cap each loaded cylinder. Never Ever cap a cylinder until you have it fully loaded. Do not remove a capped cylinder either. If you drop a capped cylinder it could end badly. I find it easier to fully load one chamber at a time unless I am using a loading stand. Search on KZread for Duelist1954 he has a wealth of videos on all things muzzleloading. If you are on Facebook consider joining the Cap and Ball Forum. Great people there and it's dedicated to cap n ball and flintlock guns.

Navy revolvers were always .36 and were better sized for belt carry. Evidently, people of the time didn’t seem to prefer the .44 either, since the .36 revolvers outsold them, and the .31 was the most common caliber carried. The modern inflation of caliber in these reproductions should not be encouraged by consumers who actually want to understand how these weapons historically performed.
